I remember my mom singing this around the house when I was just a child. I was to young to understand the meaning but it was so beautiful. Now that I know the meaning of the story it's even more beautiful. The Statler's do an awesome job singing this lovely song.

Awesome song! I heard Hank Williams Sr. Sing this song. I doing a recording soon. This is the song I chose. I didn't know the Statler brothers had picked it up. I love every song by Hank. This song touch my heart deep. These guys made it very Beatiful. I think the Statler brothers as a group just made it Beatiful. I'm sure Hank would be proud of these guys. It doesn't have to be just like the way Hank Williams did it. The story is true, but hank didn't write it? Jesus did. I can just see the holy spirit giving old Hank the words to write. When I record this song, I sure hope to led of the spirit. I hope it turns out beautiful. I pray Jesus is seen in the beautiful song. I want to be hidden and Jesus be high and lifted up. Yes Lord Amen.

Favorites of mine since the mid sixties when they came on the scene with “Flowers On The Wall” written by Lew DeWitt, the group’s original tenor and guitarist. “The Tramp On The Street” was written and recorded in the early 1930’s by Grady & Hazel Cole. It might have been what the songwriters call ‘written sideways’, or “adapted” from an earlier (about 1880) work “The Tramp” by Addison Crabtree. Post WWII there were several recordings, most notably by The Maddox Brothers And Rose, before Hank Williams began featuring it on his shows, usually as his Luke The Drifter persona. Hank did not write this song but he did record it about 2 years after Rose Maddox and Hank’s version is usually considered the definitive one. Thanks for posting, we didn’t get the Statler Brothers Show in our area.

Sorry, you are mistaken, Songsmith. There are two men named Lazarus mentioned in the Bible, one the brother of Mary and Martha, the other was a beggar that laid at the rich man's gate, and the latter one is the one mentioned here in this song, not the Lazarus that Jesus raised from the dead.

The account of Lazarus in this song is totally unscriptural. Pretty much all we know about him is that he was one that Jesus loved; his sisters were Martha and Mary; and that he died and Jesus resurrected him. Where they got the idea he was poor and living on the street where he died of starvation is beyond me. You can't just make things up out of whole cloth just because they sound good and make a good story.

It all good brother. Your right As to what you are saying. However, Lazarus in the old testament is who the song is represented. Jesus used him in one of his story's.. It's amazing how this song flows together. Only a man of salvation could write a song do Beatiful. Love your thoughts on the song.

Lazarus was a fairly common name in that era, much like John, Jerry, and many others in our society... so your point is invalid and shows a lack of understanding of the very gospel that you claim to love. II Timothy 2:15.
