It's the lack of story mode content that really gets to me. I put so many hours as a kid into the main story mode of Mario Tennis on the Gameboy Color, and it still really holds up today (although that might just be my nostalgia). It's just sad that a game from 2001 can have a better developed story mode than the titles we've gotten in recent years.

To be fair the consoles sports games counterparts never had a story mode. Portables had the advantage of story/RPG elements while consoles had better graphics, 3D gameplay and a lot more game modes. They were also easier to play with other people

Hey dude! Great video! You should consider checking out some indie sports games like Dodgeball Academia, olli olli world, lethal league, and mutant football league. Growing up i def appreciated arcadey sports games to get me interested in sports, and highlighting awesome smaller games could be a good avenue of content for your sports gaming interests, and also help you introduce these games to all the younger gamers that aren't as well served by larger developers these days. Def give it some consideration, appreciate the content dude!

One of my favorite things in Mario Superstar Baseball was the fact your team's name and logo changed depending on the roster you had. I can already see a Mario Baseball for the Switch where every team is just "TEAM [CHARACTER]" or something like that. Also, remember the official websites for these games? The Superstar Baseball website was designed like baseball card album, Mario Golf Toadstool Tour had actual golf announcers calling highlights from gameplay. Those were fun as hell and added even more charm to the games.

Yeah its a shame how relatively unpolished the mario sports titles are these days. Seems like nintendo's second party studios don't get nearly the same amount of flexibility regarding release date and don't push for the same quality bars that they used to, and it shoes.

13:57 litteraly this, althrought I would chose Daisy in mario strikers battle league as an exemple, because it's the most recent exemple, it's the one where people were the most furious about and she was just playable in every sport game (tennis, golf, baseball, olympic, strikers...) at launch but not in this one because of their free update model.

If these games all had all the care that Mario Kart 8 had... man... we would be rolling in content, game modes, options DLC that makes sense (the Wii U version doubling the stages for $15, then the Switch version doubling that double for less than $30 for almost 100 maps? Crazy!), amazing online infrastructure, and have hype gameplay that brings in a lot of the best elements of a lot of past games. While Mario Kart 8 isn't perfect (Battle Mode is still inferior to Mario Kart 64 and DS), everything that needs to be good is incredible, and that is why that game has sold over 60 million copies. I would love to see Mario Golf and Tennis take elements from the Game Boy and GBA titles and their RPG elements, combine it with the N64 and GameCube title strengths, and evolve it into something with more magic (especially in multiplayer) to it. I would love to see Mario Strikers have more chaos, more everything with support characters (numbers in a game, interactions, number of support character options, and maybe some actual control over them), and maybe implement some of those GBA Mario sports RPG elements and more of that Mario Kart chaos. Instead... what we are left with is like unseasoned food. It sucks because nearly everything else around Mario sports by Nintendo has been bloody great.

Definitely share a lot of your frustrations. about a month ago I was thinking about mario baseball and found super mega baseball on the switch store that has been a lot of fun. I'd also love another Mario 3 on 3 basketball for the switch but IDK if that will ever happen and if it does I'd be hesitant of the quality like you pointed out on a few of these new releases.

I agree with all the negative points, but I still managed to get some enjoyment out of Super Rush. I exclusively played standard golf on random courses with randomized hole orders which keeps it feeling fresh and honestly more like a normal-ass golf game. It's not worth the full price of a AAA game and it's unacceptable that the game launched with so few courses; but there is some fun to be had if you stay away from story mode and speed golf. Great video!

Yup. I totally agree with being able to find fun playing this game. I go back to Aces and Strikers once every 2 weeks but yeah My problem is definitely the price. This is a $15 game at best.

I felt so vindicated when I started people hating on Super Strikers. My roommate and I finished it in a weekend and I just had no interest in ever picking it back up again

I had a game boy color as a kid. My brother and I bought the plug in light for it (no backlight so you needed the external light if you wanted to play when it started to get dark) and every time we'd go on vacation we'd rent Mario Tennis from Blockbuster. We liked it so much we eventually bought it or I got as a present. I'm not sure if it was even that good of a game compared to what came after but we had so much fun playing singles and doubles games - don't remember what else there was. Sad that isn't still the case.

I really hope the gaming industry changes as a whole in the next few years, they are becoming about money and not the player, they know there are fanboys who will buy everything and anything with big names on it and the micro transactions are the absolute worst thing

I learned the rules to golf and tennis because of Mario Golf and Mario Tennis. It's a shame that the new games aren't worth buying. Like you alluded to, so many kids won't have interest in these sports because their Mario sports games suck.

Something I have to disagree on about Mario Power Tennis being a great game : The physics are not fantastic and the gameplay boils down to a button mash fest for a simple reason : Lobs and drop shots in this game are awful and unusable. Aces has that part done right. Besides poor physics and not so great tennis gameplay it does everything else far better though Edit : Didn't think about that but hilariously, the physics in Mario Golf Toadstool Tour are far superior than in Super Rushed where it feels awfully floaty, the ball rolls then stops to a crawl, and for some reason I will never understand why, the blue/red chroma for the grid and UI is inverted. In fact Toadstool Tour is simply objectively superior to Super Rushed on every way, even graphics

Mario superstar baseball is my favorite video game of all time but the news about a potential new Mario baseball doesn’t excite me. Any new Mario baseball game will have barely enough characters to make two lineups, 3 maps with no field gimmicks, and no story mode at launch with free updates to add characters later

Also, Don’t know it this falls under your umbrella, but if hogwarts legacy has a quidditch dlc, would love to hear your take on the new version vs the old version of quidditch. I miss the customization like you mentioned from Mario Sports games. And for Mario Golf Super Rush the courses almost feel the same. Like one course I swear is the same, with just different weather.

Kofie do you know about Mario Tennis: Power Tour? I noticed you only mentioned Mario Power Tennis and Mario Golf: Advance Tour from that era, but there was also Mario Tennis: Power Tour for the GBA which had the same RPG style story mode as Advance Tour (with a similar ending too). There was also Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour for the GameCube which was a really good golf game with some great courses, but no story mode just like Mario Power Tennis.

It seems the only Mario sports series who doesn't suck nowadays is Mario & Sonic, thanks to Sega.

he lives in LA and right after he moved in there was a mild earthquake. His whole house shifted about 43 degrees and they haven't been able to fix it yet.

Nintendo always tries to do something new, which is an issue when they already have something good going on. The Mario Sports games are a great example of this Edit: I also think the increased cost of game development has to do with the games being shorter and having less content

i think mario baseball will never have a chance in japan cause pawapuro is the better game.If you check out the newest game(2022) i am certainly you will wish mario sport titles have a half amount of modes that series have.(even their story modes have insane replay values unlike some story modes you only play once and move on).

The version konami released in the west (wbsc power pro which they cut all of the best modes and features)actually had the nearly the same amount of mode as strikers and only cost 1$(more characters ofc) The full version (jp): Success mode ( 3 stories with replayablity to create new character) Pennant (Franchise can have maximum 16 custom teams) My life (much better than rtts tbh ) Pawafes(play a tournament, collect & level up more than 200 characters from old success while create new characters ) Eikan 9(like college dynasty but set in high school the goal is not only win championship but also train best players, the player get drafted will become playable characters in my life or pennant or vs Cpu) Live scenario, Championship(online) Pawa Park, tournament, homerun derby... If a Nintendo sport titles have half amount of modes with that much replayablity it certainly will be crowned as the best arcade sport game (kinda funny if you think about it tbh) Note: you can even create your own pitch in this game (jp version)
