    Revell usually likes to get two body style variations out of an all-new tool, I wonder if there's going to be an '80s squarebody C-10 pickup coming? Preferably a Fleetside with 2wd parts and all the low-series work truck parts already tooled for that municipal Blazer. (it always bothered me that there was a scene where Hopper and Mike were fighting over the power windows, it should have cranks).

    As an avid modeler and collector, and even a real 1/1 scale guy, I bitched at and prodded Moebius quite a lot when their Ford pickups first came out regarding different platforms, 4x4 set-ups, motors, and just about anything else that I could come up with as an idea. I bitched so much about the incorrectness of the 1967-72 dog-dish hubcaps that they made the newer 3/4-ton trucks with the correct caps, but didn't correct the original hubcaps, which of course would have costed them money to do. I made comparisons about how the 1965-66 Ford Pickup platform was basically unchanged related to the 1967-72 Bump-sides I was highly critical about why the initial offerings were only of 2x4 pickups and made many suggestions about which products they should come out with. Of course, I don't expect them to ever give me any credit regarding these ideas, but practically everything I mentioned to them came to fruition eventually. Even back before they came out with the '65-'66 Fords, I suggested that they should probably come out with a 1967-68 Chevy pickup. I know that many would never let me just say that it was all my idea, but just saying, if it wasn't me or a group of customers like me, I wouldn't believe that. I mentioned small tweaks that would improve details, accuracy and even functionality. They all came into being. I could make predictions about what they will come up with just based upon what I suggested to them almost 10+ years ago or more. IMHO, they are still screwing up on several of their kits in details and correctness, but I'm a nitpicker. I think most old modelers like me are. One thing that really amazes me is how the 3D tech side of things is actually improving how these models can look.

    Actually they've made corrected F-100 wheel covers now too per a post they made on a forum back in July - to be released in a later release. At this point the only light duty truck (because the tow truck is still out there pending in the future) idea they haven't released yet is a "Day 2" F-100 4x4 that comes with custom rims, a gun rack w/2 guns and a bumper mounted winch. In theory I suppose that release could carry the new stock wheel covers as an option to using the custom wheels. There was also talk of those wheels being offered through the Pegasus Shop online, but as of yet they aren't up there. The Dually Wheels (plain and plated), the Snow Plow, and the Gun Rack w/guns are available for purchase as individual "parts packs".

    I believe our hobby is thriving even more by today's standards. My worry is the hobby shops are dying due to competition with online stores. I grew up walking into my local hobby shop as a kid and spending my well earned allowance. I don't want to deprive my kids of that enjoyment. Thank you for all the wonderful stash reports and waiting for more.

    Hobby shops are dying.....and they aren't coming back. I hate to say it. I belong to a local model club and we get our kits online, or through a local distributor connection. LHS have shown little support for car modelers often being out of stock or charging insane pricing. If Ollie's is selling a Rat Fink IH tractor fpr $19.99 and making money Then the LHS that had it at 69.95 is out and out gouging. Guess where I'm going. Most shops are after the R/C crowd anyway....apparently their members are all related to Jeff Besos .

  • @niteowl7710

    @niteowl7710

    8 ай бұрын

    Yeah, but Ollie's is selling dead stock from Wal*Mart at $19.99. They're making a profit because buying old dead stock is how they make their money. There have been a few runs of kits out of Round2 and Revell that were manufactured specifically for Ollie's, but the most recent batch of kits they got in are leftovers from last Christmas' Round2 shippers that most Wal*Marts received. My local Wally World has gotten another one for this Christmas season, but it's about 1/4 the size as last year. Beyond that, brick and mortar Hobby Shops are very much a regional thing. Here around the Pittsburgh Metro area we have 7 of them spread across four counties. We have 4 local model shows a year as well, a few have closed, but they've been replaced by new ones that have opened. I realize we're very lucky in that way, but it seems like so many shops close down because the original owners retire and either no one wants to buy out the business, or the new owners immediately crash it into the ground.

  • @lincoslam

    @lincoslam

    8 ай бұрын

    I get the "closeout" aspect of Ollies. I buy stuff there all the time, and I remember the discussion on the box dating making no sense as far as closeout sales...but regardless, all the LHS we have had were 12th rate and had nothing, or car models were of secondary interest. So I have little affection for them. Point being....if you are going to take a $39.95 list kit , jack it up to $69.95 then cry when no one comes in to stare at your empty Tamiya paint rack or thumb through some year old magazines, what did you expect? I get the manufacturers make their margins on much slimmer volume then when i was a kid, so pricing is higher overall but paying 49.95 for AMT's 56 Ford is insane. Is the hobby dead? Of course not. But those trying to squeeze every last cent out of modellers are of no use, and shame on some of these online sellers also. Common kit is discontinued and the next day the price goes up to the stratosphere. Enough crying.....time to build. @@niteowl7710

    @lincoslam Very true, hobby shops that want to price out at (or in some cases above MSRP) aren't doing themselves any favors. We have one around locally that does that, but then has a flyer up on the shelves saying you get 15% off at the register. He's convinced he sells stuff because people think they're getting a deal with the "sale" rather than just pricing the kits at a better price to begin with...

    I think that in order for 3D Printing to truly "take over" in a significant way there will need to be some sort of industry standard applied within the software & hardware of all the various machines. There's still a bit of dark arts magic required to get one to work, especially in the realm of support placement. Until and unless you get to a point where you can all but guarantee the files will print no matter what printer you're using, what resin you're using, et al I don't see a mass market solution for replacing injection molded models with 3D printing. Plus there's just some things that injection molding just does better than printing, so I would imagine a would where you buy a plastic model, but it comes with (or has DLC available) for additional engine, wheels, etc.

My local "car only" hobby shop started carrying Bandai and other Gunpla/Gundam right before Covid and in 2023 those kits represent over 50% of total sales. Some of those Perfect & Ultimate Grade kits are the size of a roller suitcase and cost in excess of $200. Yet there's always some guys in their twenties and early thirties in their on the weekends carrying them out of the store.

    The VW is a Revell Germany tooling so it's "International" Scale and the Camaro is ex-Monogram and they always embraced 1/24 when they were their own entity. Lot of these licensed items end up being sold to collectors of TV/Movie memorabilia and never get opened, let alone built.

    Some people seem to fall in love with certain model kits. Every so often on here someone stirs up a "Favorite Kit" video and the replies always center around building multiple examples of the same model. There are a handful of people who want to build "xyz" in every factory color it came in...and race car builders tend to have multiples of kits to serve as "blanks" for the variety of aftermarket liveries on offer. Collecting kits just to say you own every boxing of a specific kit and never building any of them...that leans hard into the hoarding tendencies of this hobby.

    I have been building model cars for 50 + years....the last 40 years of them were the final death throes of the hobby. This has got to be the longest, drawn out expiration ever recorded.. At this rate I hope it keeps flailing about. Meanwhile, it's nice to see everybody thinking outside the box, domestically. Being a Ford man I have been living in fantasy world with Moebius' '65-'72 F series trucks. A Ford kit bashers heaven if there ever was one. The wrecker is a perfect piece. I always had a feeling that Chevrolets were coming and if they do them like the Fords they will do well..So much for the collectors' overpriced and underwhelming '67-'72 AMT/MPC kits. Funny how the '72 Chevrolet pick up in Coke Livery was at Ollies these past two weeks en masse. Now..if we could get them to do a '61-'71 Dodge Pick Up....or dare I say 50's International....obviously crazy talk. Nice how Round 2 is grabbing the baton on the older F series....I see a '66 F250 4x4 with a "wrongbed" coming. Kudo's on the '85 Blazer from Revell. Now just give us a Ranchero and a Courier based on the the '57 Ford. Yup....sprinkle the lime, this hobby is so dead it stinks.

    With respect to your brother is what he produces heavily licensed the way everything in models are? The agreements don't exist in perpetuity, the major brands (GM, Ford, Stellantis, Coke, Hostess, etc) have to be renewed every three years and there is an individual licensing fee on each item tacked onto that. While the cost of raw materials may not have increased substantially, I also presume your brother makes significantly more than he did in the 80s as well.

    @waynesworldofmodeling2574 The trademark of Monogram has been something Revell has owned since they merged back in the 1980s, and occasionally it still gets used today. But what I meant was Salvinos JR has three clumps of tooling. The 1/25 Vintage kits from the 1970s (Charger, Roadrunner, Olds & Monte Carlo) are new tools they created with the actual tooling work done in China. The 1/24 NextGen kits are again new tools they made (in China). But the Salvinos kits they've released in 1/24 from the 1980s (Regal, Grand Prix, Monte Carlo SS/Aeroback) are the original old Monogram tools. New bodies were tooled (in China) for the Grand Prix 2+2 and Le Mans which fit onto the old Monogram chassis/running gear.

The prices of those cars in 2023 are more than I paid for my house in a lot of cases at Mecum so they're not a reality to anyone who didn’t physically live through that era. I think there will be a drift towards subject matter from the 70s/80s/90s as GenX becomes the larger component of their customer base (see 71 442, 84 Porsche 911, 85 Blazer, not to mention the large investment in 80s/90s era racing subjects at the likes of Hasegawa, NuNu/Beemax and Belkits.
