The start of Big Boy 4014s trip to Omaha
Sorry for the delay on this video, I have had a busy week and have not had much time to edit. Here is the video of the start of Big Boy 4014’s trip to Omaha. I plan on making another video when it comes back to Cheyenne.

The fact of how you pretty much recreated 3985 climbing that hill with 175 cars from that almost same angle at the beginning was cool

Yes, that is the main reason I went there first.

@@FrontRangeRailfan They need to let this beast pull a 3 mile length of cars up this hills without diesel lie it's smaller sibling the mighty Challenger. Let the newer Generation see who's the real King of Sherman Hill .

@@robertcamble3543it would be amazing to see that but logistically the railroad isn’t equipped anymore for the big boy to pull that kind of a train anymore

I Want The 4014 to do that with the same size train

@@JoeyTIchy like I said as cool as it would for it to happen *THE RAILROAD ISNT EQUIPPED FOR THE 4014 to pull that* and plus they want to keep the 4014’s cast iron brakes in good condition aswell they only have one shop they can do that work to replace them there steam shop
This is one of the things that truly make America great.
Many of my family worked the railroad including my father. I remember seeing one of these big beautiful monsters in Columbus, Nebraska as a kid.
I like the music with the stills!

😍😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🤩
They said steam was dead in the 1950s, this is 2023, somebody lied to us. In the 1990s they said the caboose was dead, again, they lied! This video demonstrates the way railroading was intended to be, with an awesome steamer, a caboose, and lots of railfans! (And PSR isnt something new, didnt they have hotshot scheduled freights in the days of steam?)

I am pretty sure, agreed
Got to ask . Was that a diesel pusher in line behind Big Boy ?

Not a pusher. It is there for a couple of reasons. One, it's mandated that Steam Locomotives have a diesel as a backup. But the reason it's there is to use it's dynamic brakes to give the Big Boy something to pull! It needs something to do! And, of course, to keep him company!

It also can be a PTC (positive train control) backup and was used as the PTC system before big boy got one.
No offense UP, but what a waste of tractive effort... You could have easily put an entire manifest behind her, as 3985 graphically displayed in 1991. 9 cars? The engine was built to pull 2-300...

They don’t want to over stress Bigboy to the point that she’s un repairable and would cost to much to even remotely fix. She’ll never pull heavy freight ever again because it’s UP’s expensive baby.

@@Chug_z I completely get that, it should be noted that they actually did use her in helper service a couple days ago, and by the sound of her stack I’d say it was a pretty heavy train. But that said this will probably be a one-off exceedingly rare occurrence, I’m sure Ed still gets nightmares about the condition of 3985 after her 2nd retirement… UP is clearly trying to avoid a repeat of that situation as much as possible, and I can’t exactly blame them… Although it’s a huge bummer from a railfans perspective, and in my opinion they could at least give her a string of 50 or 60 so we could pretend like she’s under any kind of load.
