I'm Irish, watch as much of Simon's stuff as possible. There's something about irish events and conflict specifically that Simon seems to cover with respect and dignity. He done the Easter Rising ,War of Independence and Civil War on warographics. I'm still awaiting his take on the troubles. This is a very good piece on a very difficult event in Dublin's history. Keep up the good work sir.

I think most nations and even local areas have a moment in each generation that transforms the public focus for many decades and sometimes centuries. I wasn’t 10 years old when this happened. I remember it. The news reports were saying it was “whatever popular term for domestic terrorism, was back then”. I’m from the USA and I thought it was over around 15 minutes, because that’s how it would have ended in my country. I’m so happy that progress is being made toward justice. And I’m not paying lip service, but yall have come out stronger and safer, not only through adversity, but in spite of it. 🙏

It also reminds me of the fire that broke out in the nightclub República Cromañón in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in December 2004, killing 194 people and leaving almost 1,500 injured. The band playing there that night, Callejeros, advertised it as "the traffic flare party," encouraging people to bring flares to the concert. One ignited a shade cloth that was (illegally) covering the ceiling and the club went up in flames. The worst part was that some of the deaths were small children, since there was a sort of "daycare" being run from the women's bathroom.

Hey Simon, you should consider making an episode about the 2013 Kiss Nightclub fire in Brazil, over 240 deaths and over 600 injured. They were traped inside the club on fire having to break the concrete walls to save their lives. It's one of the worst fires in nightclubs in the world and still a very sore topic around here, it's been very hard for the families to get justice and even point out a culprit. One night you go out to have fun with your friends and never comes back, the families tales are heartbreaking.

The Stardust Fire has always been an extraordinarily significant tragedy (crime) …Ireland was in such dire economic state in those days, we had The Troubles raging, hunger strikes, bombs , shootings, heroin epidemic. There’s a massive list of nightclub/discotheque fires on Wikipedia. The cocoanut grove as far back as the 1940’s, the Bluebird hotel, the Whiskey-a-go-go, the Beverly Hills supper club , the Happyland dance club, the Station, the Kiss club…. People who are out for a night of fun almost never check to see if their venue is actually safe (it shouldn’t HAVE to be something people do, but after reading all of those you can’t help but go somewhere and think “How safely and quickly can I get out of here if there was a fire?”. And then when you’re in the dark and several drinks in, that easy staircase out or finding the exit door that you thought was right there turns into a complete nightmare. And club owners always seem to be more complicit than most in endangering their patrons by locking doors and windows shut and not marking the exits.

There was also The Station nightclub fire in Rhode Island during the Whitesnake concert. It started when they set off pyrotechnics INSIDE the building that was "insulted" with flammable packing foam. It killed 100 and injured over 200.

I used to work in a supermarket, and one of the managers was a survivor of the Stardust fire. One of his eyes was melted shut, and he had no hair on that side of his head.

Caller from Dublin: Simon, I'm a big fan, so please take this in good faith. You managed to get every single Irish word and name wrong (without exception). Of course Irish people are going to tune into this one and I assume it it monetised. It would not be difficult at all to have a transliteration on the script. Had the subject been lighter and less close to home I would have laughed this off - but Artane is not that far from me and I have friends who lost friends in the Stardust. Thanks.

As a firefighter, I have studied many of these fires and negligence always seems to be the cause, whether it be flammable materials, over capacity, poor repairs or even done purposely. Always know where your fire exits are located whenever in a hotel, club or even restaurant. Even this is no guarantee though if someone has chained and locked those exits. Can we have the Station Nightclub and Kings Cross fires next, in both cases it was strange to know that even when some people saw fire and smoke they still didn't think to leave to safety.

My grandmother was at the Stardust, unknowingly pregnant with my mam. She luckily escaped when those outside broke down a door that her and others were trapped behind, suffering 3rd degree burns and staying in hospital for a few weeks,. Her and my grandfather lost many friends and fought for justice all those years along with everyone else from Northside Dublin who suffered the effects of the complete negligence by those in charge. Her life went on but 48 others tragically lost theirs along with those who suffered the mental effects of what they witnessed, most teenagers. Her opinion has always been that if this happened to people not from a working-class background, Northsiders, that justice would not have had to been fought for and that the incident would never have happened in the first place. Unfortunately, the tragedy is a snapshot of Ireland at the time, complete lack of care by those controlling the country. Those who fought for justice should be celebrated as heroes, never forgetting what was lost that night.

When you hear about tragedies like this and talk about the lasting deep pain of survivors families, shouldn’t we also talk about those victims and families who seemed to hold it together or were in a better place after such a terrible loss? I personally would like to know why some people cope much better than others.

What a tragic incident. It reminds me of a similar incident that happened in South Korea. On October 30th, 1999, in Incheon Metropolitan City at 6:55 pm, a beer hall caught fire and killed 56 people, and injured 75 people, most of them minors. This incident was later known as the "Incheon Inhyeon-dong pub fire disaster." The fire was caused by a cigarette in the Karaoke box underneath the building. The sprinklers had been removed for renovation reasons. The fire spread quickly with the cheap urethane foam interior on underground and ground floors, creating toxic gas. The beer hall was on the second floor, and most customers were minors. The establishment had been running an illegal business of advertising & selling alcohol to minors. The place had been overcrowded to maximize profit. 100 customers in 35.5 sqft. The place was like a can of sardines. There were no proper exits, and the windows didn't open. The manager blocked the entrance, demanding the teenagers pay before leaving, making them miss the golden hour and making the place inescapable. The manager later escaped by ripping off the ventilation fan in the kitchen without telling anyone. When the powers went out, the chaos became worse. Teenagers rushed toward the emergency exit sign, only to discover it led to the restroom. People pushed in, but none could come out. When the rescue team came in, the majority of the bodies were centered in that area. All of them died from suffocation. The Karaoke box and the beer hall had been owned by one person, an entrepreneur who owned 8 similar businesses in the area. And he had been bribing the local police and inspectors to overlook the blatant code violations in his establishments. The owner and manager were each sentenced to 5 years and 3 1/2 years in prison for causing death by Occupational Negligence. But the bribed officials and officers were never charged with imprisonment. The majority of the media and the public portrayed the incident as "students who got killed for sneaking into an illegal pub and getting drunk." South Korea was more conservative in 1999, and the student's only duty was to be polite and diligent in their studies. Arcade games, Karaoke, and any means the students could do for fun were discouraged as "distracting" and "corruptive." When the families of the deceased put on demonstrations and petitions to plead proper justice for the corrupt officials and officers & laws to prevent incidents like this from happening again, the media and the public shamed them for "trying to rip off more settlement money by selling out their dead children."

A Concise, essentially accurate and respectful documentary... But in fairness, Simon did make a dog's dinner of the pronunciations! I wouldn't even knock him for it... More or less the equivalent of people saying "Worr~cess~ter~shire" for Worcestershire, "Gluecosster" for Gloucester, "Eedin~burg" for Edinburgh... or "Saint John" for the person's name St.John (pron. 'Sinjonn/Sinjinn') etc...

Just for context, as I imagine, those not from Ireland are probably a little confused as to why the victims were buried so quickly. In Ireland, you don't need to wait for a death certificate before a funeral unless the person's death was under suspicious circumstances (aka, something the Garda/Coroners Office is investigating), meaning the funeral/burial is usually within two to four days (depending on the day) of death.
