Lord, I could listen to Pops and Mavis sing all day!
I am tired of my generation. We need to come home and get our souls fed via music. This is real soul music. This is when. Music had meaning 😭
Damn, I would have been dancin' and singin' in the isles with the Staple Singers. How in the hell can anyone sit when they are playing? They are legendary!

What I thought was weird in this video is this is the Hall of Fane and the majority of the audience is just sitting there like they’ve never danced or feel rhythm in their life…shame on them

It's a cryin' shame it took over 20 years to be inducted!! They have always been great. Mavis is a national treasure.

It has to be 25 years since your first album before you're eligible. For instance Are You Experienced? came out in 1967 but the Jimi Hendrix Experience wasn't inducted until 1992.

The inductions mean nothing. We know The Staples were great but some mediocre tat gets inducted.
Man those songs take me back to the day
Pop's Staples is the man. Pure R&B. Mavis nails it everytime! Here voice is intoxicating. Can't sit still when this comes on the radio. Pull the car over, get out and dance your freakin' ass off!

I love how they toned it all down at the beginning especially, so he could still lead, as his voice is soft now. Later on she says, "don't worry, I won't leave ya Pops!" that's true love right there.
Such a beautiful, talented family. They have provided spiritual, soulful music to us for decades. Love it! Mama, I know you still listening in 2022.
Mavis always performs like it's her last chance! She gives 1000%!
So happy to see Mavis Staple honored at the Kennedy Center, this lady along with her family are legends. I'm sure "Pop's" is somewhere smiling.
So glad they got into the Hall before ole pops died.
They took me there, respect to The Staple Singers. Love 'em!
Love how right at the :18 second mark of Respect Yourself, Mavis "catches" that Pops is having a bit of trouble remembering the lines. Immediately, she jumps in and takes over the lead until she hears that he is now good, and then "hands" it back to him! Class Act!!

***** The guy was 70 years old in this video. Cut him some slack. I think by the phrase "class act," Davidmurray1952 meant how the daughter handled it so that his slip up didn't ruin the song, then effectively turned it back over to him seamlessly without interrupting the song.

+Tony Saber These people don't know anything else. Siniging is what they are born to do. You don't like it, don't look or listen. because I think even though they maybe be old they can still outsing some of the youngsters!
@LadySovjet

well then we agree on disagree. In this case the only "harm" Pops Staples does is hurting your ears.
@LadySovjet

+Tony Saber keep up with the unrespectfulness. As I said before we agree on disagree. I don't know what you do but I do hope when you're that age you'll get the same "respect" you display now. Maybe you'll remember this conversation. Be well.
You know what Mavis, held it up for for the staples singers that night. Pop held his own. But back in the day!!!! But you know what? POP, really did carry them. We love you Family staples
Beautiful tunes of our good old days. Still sounding great today, 2024. Wonderful!

I agree, she does still sound good today, which is a testament to her wonderful talent, however, this was 1999. The audience was comatose though. Not sure WHAT THEY were listening to🤦🏽♀️.
Over 40 blessed years. They started out singing gospel and I loved the gospel albums too. That’s amazing to be successful in both genres

I just can't get over Mavis and her voice. I absolutely love her. The woman just oozes soul from her pores. There are only two other women that can hold a candle to her and they are Mahalia Jackson and Patti Labelle. Such powerful and beautiful voices they all are.

@misstury606 I have to agree with you on that. Aretha & Tina Turner are great signers but Mahalia Jackson, Mavis Staple and Patti LaBelle have voices that are other worldly and spiritual. They sing with every fiber of their being; from their core.

Well, first of all, it's really gospel music. Secondly, stop dissing the generations or descendants of black R&B and gospel groups artists like the Staples Singers, Gladys Night & the Pips, Sly &The Family Stone, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, James Brown, etc.... and, many of today's black young people and kids sing great.., all throughout the South. I'm talkin' 'bout da church.

I think this was last performance of all the original Staples singers together before Pops passed away the next year.

Music indeed is a International Language. People around the world may not understand your language but play music by Prince, Michael Jackson etc - music language becomes one.
Their music is as fresh today (2017) as it was when it first came out. The music is timeless. If you aren't dancing to it, you had better check yourself cause you have likely passed on.
Pops Staples!!!! You was the Man!
My best friend Clare (passed away a few years ago) would listen to The Staple Singers and when I am really missing her, I come and listen to them and my heart doesn't hurt as much.... the joy and the smiles in their music lifts me.

The Staple Singers are a Gift from GOD.
They were so unique, so much talent, loyalty within the ranks, such respect for each other and their audience, soul and the blues, just so grand. A beautiful family with heart.
Love 💕 Staples Singers!!!! Sang them songs Mavis!!!! Some of My Favorites!!!!🥰🙏🏾🌹🌹🎸🎤💋
AAawww ...good music ...back in the day ...when ...men were men ...and women were glad they were...
Damn l love their soul singing!!! So amazing. I heard this in my brain when I hadn't listened to it in years... then I searched it up. Crazy. Love it!!
what a wonderful performance, i love it, love them, they can take me there everytime! lead the way.....
How cool, how elegant, how RIGHT - ! I don't mind being 'old' so much when I can call this music 'my generation's.'! (Musicians of this caliber did not need auto-tune).
That crowd participation was horrible for Our Gospel & Soul Legend We Salute You Ms Mavis Then & Now
just so, so, so GOOOD!!!!!
I first heard of the Staples Singers when they performed at the Soul to Soul Concert held in Accra, Ghana. Other artistes we're Santana, Ike and Tina Turner, and Wilson Pickett. Years later I found out that Prince played the Soul to Soul video at his concerts after sound check and before his concerts started. He must have heard about Soul to Soul from Mavis Staples whom he was close to.
thank God I had the opportunity of meeting pop and and the Staple Singers God only knows I love the rest of respect yourself I had a great time at the Vicksburg City Auditorium to be able to play The Staple Singers in Mississippi it was a great show and pop is no longer with us and after seeing the naked performance I really understand what it means to respect yourself may God continue to bless us all I will definitely keep praise him thank God
They bring a lot of joy when they perform. Wow!
Will and Paul gets it done!!! Wonderful group. Wonderful song!!!
I love their music, very talented family.
