About Stax Records
Stax Records, now owned by Concord/Craft Recordings, was founded by Jim Stewart in 1957 in Memphis, Tennessee. It rose from a small, family-operated company to become one of the most influential soul music record labels in the world, helping create “The Memphis Sound” and launching the careers of icons such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, the Staple Singers, Sam & Dave, Rufus and Carla Thomas, The Bar-Kays, and dozens of other artists who helped change popular culture forever. In all, Stax placed 167 hit songs in the Top 100 in Pop and 243 hits in the Top 100 in R&B.
Stax Records works closely with the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, the Stax Music Academy, and The Soulsville Charter School, all operated by the Soulsville Foundation and all located on a vibrant campus at the original site of Stax Records in Memphis, TN. The Soulsville Foundation perpetuates the soul of Stax Records by preserving its rich cultural legacy, educating youth to be prepared for life success, and inspiring future artists to achieve their dreams.

The lyrics are wrong during the bass solo. David was the bass player's name. Mavis sings Davey not baby Little Davey (cuz he was short) Davey not Lady. Recorded by the Swampers in Muscle Shoals. There's a movie about them, they backed up Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Rolling Stones and had Dwayne Alman living in a tent in the studio parking lot.

this is a timeless super special song in the very rare category of an anthem ,a prophetic anthem and declaration of galvanizing people to rise up and go to a new place of freedom and the incredible feeling of a win . here it's being used for the struggle of civil rights .but it's applicable anywhere, where people want to breakout of the limiting prisons' they become conscious of themselves being in.and are asking themselves "can i break out of here and go to a better place " it's an invitation shout "yes" ,and says you can because" I KNOW A PLACE " . . it's an invitation to move into Hope, faith and ACTION. " IT"S INSPIRED" i bet this song was born out of heaps of prayer .

I became aware of Mavis from seeing her in The Last Waltz. The power in her voice (like an idling muscle car..you hear the power right away) but what blew me away was her phrasing on the verse of The Weight she sang. So I got myself somewhat familiar. This is IMO one of the sexiest vocal performances ever. People told me it's natural, not trying to do it, as they're gospel. I didn't argue but my mind was calling BS. Why during the guitar solo is she saying Daddy, daddy... I later found out that her actual father was the guitarist for the Staples 🤣😂
