The ST40 divertor innovation story--fast-tracking a tokamak upgrade during a global pandemic

Ғылым және технология

Fast-tracking a divertor into ST40 during the Covid-19 pandemic--how did they do it?
In 2019, the Divertor Team was designing a divertor for a future major upgrade of ST40. But then, in early 2020, it was decided to fast-track a divertor into the current ST40, without a major upgrade, in order to improve performance for the 100 million degree milestone.
It was always going to be a huge challenge, but then coronavirus struck as well. But Tokamak Energy prides itself on the team's agility and innovation.
Hear the story of the challenge and how they tackled it from Daniel Iglesias and Rob Bamber.

@@tokamakenergy6400 I am the author of the third method of achieving nuclear fusion, this is the repetition of physical conditions as in the solar corona. In 6 months there will be a small prototype of a commercial fusion reactor. A commercial fusion reactor in 1-2 years! Power 100 kW. For many years (almost 25 years) I have been convincing scientists that thermonuclear fusion in the Sun occurs not in the core of the Sun, but in the solar corona !!! But scientists are very stubborn, and do not want to believe the obvious. Why are scientists not accepting new breakthrough scientific ideas? There is an assumption, accepted by most scientists, that thermonuclear fusion in the Sun occurs in the Sun's core. But no one has ever actually confirmed this. This is just a guess, the fantasy of an authoritative physicist. Scientists are currently using two methods to achieve nuclear fusion: inertial confinement and magnetic confinement. But there is also a third method of achieving nuclear fusion, this is the repetition of physical conditions as in the solar corona. Nobody is using this third method to achieve nuclear fusion? In 6 months there will be a small prototype of a commercial fusion reactor. A commercial fusion reactor in 1-2 years! I propose a technology transfer for a commercial fusion reactor under a contract. Thermonuclear fusion in the Sun - a new version. n-t.ru/tp/ie/ts.htm kzread.info/dash/bejne/m653o66jaJeeqLg.html

Thanks for putting out a video with so much interesting technical detail. It's a real pleasure to get this kind of insight into your day-to-day engineering challenges. For those of us who are fascinated by the engineering involved but whose work is much more mundane, it's a real pleasure to be able to get this kind of running development log. Thanks, kudos, and keep up the amazing work, we're all behind you.

Really appreciate the regular updates from Tokamak Energy. I've been following fusion prospects for more than forty years -- before the start of JET -- and it's really exciting to now see commercial ventures like TE coming on in leaps and bounds. The HTS ReBCO tapes and now the technically challenging divertor are starting to make compact fusion look like a genuinely practical possibility. Looking forward to the progress over the next few years.

@@Whipster-Old yep they usually are, this on takes advantage (or rather will) of new engineering in magnet tech which means you can run higher fields which means smaller reactors for the same output which means they're significantly smaller and thus easier to make which leads to them being faster produce at significantly lower costs - think ITER's the entire planet coming together to fund the project and it taking decades versus this one company with effectively startup money in a few years.

There are self-stablising plasmas that can avoid the problems of plasma instability, but are surprisingly cheap to set up. Loosely, you want to reduce the system current or you'll be swung by the formed unstable arc mode plasma, and the general relation of `A/m^2 = C/m^3 * m/s`, namely where `A/m^2` is proportional to `m/s`, such that `C/m^3` doesn't really change since you can't really increase the amount of coulombs in a unit mass. This tends towards a particular design that does not need containment magnets, nor a tokamak design. The hint here is anode tufting.

For some reason everyone thinks that nuclear fusion must have physical criteria only as in the fusion bomb? There are other ways of nuclear fusion that are not of the explosive type. Everyone has nuclear fusion in the solar corona in front of their eyes, but everyone obeys dogma, wrong scientific theory, and doesn't want to see the obvious. Nuclear fusion in the core of the Sun is an assumption. This assumption is not actually proven by anything. Nuclear fusion in the solar corona is proven by facts, which I set out in the video clip. For 70 years there is no result - no commercial fusion reactor. Isn't this already pseudoscience? There won't be a commercial fusion reactor for another 70 years or more. Investors and governments need to understand that they keep putting a lot of money into a failed project with a 70-year history of developing a commercial fusion reactor. They will never get a commercial fusion reactor. Because the developers have a wrong understanding of the necessary physical conditions for nuclear fusion in the reactor, to produce commercial heat. I will transfer the technology of a new method of nuclear fusion (fusion project #2) free of charge, under an agreement (contract). Remuneration according to the results. There will be an appendix to the contract, where the physical phenomenon and technology will be described. And until a small prototype of a commercial fusion reactor works, until it shows commercial heat, no one pays me. There is no deception here. The result is a prototype, small commercial fusion reactor I can make myself, in 1-2 years, depends on funding and speed of manufacturing. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a2WCscx8lbPglA.html I
