5 yesterday. 5 again today. Only one earlier in the Spring. One last year. I know why we are on a roll. It's because I put down a small piece of plywood under it. A flat surface. Bait with Chicken scratch in the center. Stay away all day. Check at dusk. Then to the tank they go. They have damaged our barns & foundations.

I bought one to go up against Eastern tree squirrels. No luck. Kept trying and trying. I figured it might be good for western ground squirrels, but not so much for tree squirrels. Then had an infestation of chipmunks, did over $1000 damage under the hood of 2 vehicles. Bought a smaller chipmunkinator from Tractor Supply, and it works like a charm. We've "retired" over 18 chipmunks from the area in a couple of months. Yesterday I checked the chipmunkinator, and a grey squirrel had squirmed through the trap door and gobbled up the bird seed bait. He just about filled up the entire inside of the trap. Man, he was like the energizer bunny, jumpin' around to get out. I guess it DOES work, after all. I'll set both of 'em out now, and hope for the best. There's a little red squirrel now that's driving us crazy.

Put some food on the ground near to the trap. I buy a bag of bird food with nuts and berries in it- think its called backyard wildlife mix or something. Just put it in a little pile where the squirrels can find it. Let them get used to finding food there. After a few days, put the trap closer and put the food outside the door of the trap. After a day or two, put the bigger pieces of nuts and peanuts inside the trap. It takes a little patience but once they know the food is there, they’ll go in. I catch so many squirrels!

FYI- it is strictly illegal to relocate wild animals in California, unless you have a permit issue by DFW. Caught ground squirrels (or other nuisance pests) can be trapped, but must either be released on the same unit of property, or euthanized by humane means. What constitutes "humane means" isn't specified in the state code.

2 were delivered May 20, 2023 @ 4 pm and at 4 pm on May 23, 2023 I had already captured & extinguished 24 total, 16 males & 8 females, in Nawth Central Florida where here in the rural area if you DON'T have a carport to in close your vehicle you better do something, they got so bad the birds couldn't get to the bird feeder because of the tree rats, I found it was better for me to NOT let more than 3 get in there at a time because they were putting up such a fuss I didn't want that to scare off the others. NOW, since those that hung out closer to the house have been removed I think I'm going to move the cages further out to capture the ones further out, the red tailed hawks & I are now on a 1st name basis

Hopefully you have checked your local regs with CADFW. In the area of California I live you can’t trap and relocate. You must dispatch them unless you are transporting them to a wildlife rehab for medical treatment. It’s a huge fine if your caught. 😬

Red squirrels are the main problem in my area. They raided a Mourning Dove nest and destroyed it. The little buggers get into my house and use my winter parka and boots to store the seeds they collect. They use my knit caps for a nest. No sympathy for Red squirrels here.
