The Spyderco Tenacious and Persistence: The Combined Nick Shabazz Review
The Spyderco Tenacious and Persistence are two value-forward EDC folding knives from Spyderco, both around $40, both at the very top end of Thrifty Thursdays. They're well-designed knives, built solidly for a good price, but they're not that ergonomic, they're thick, and they're pretty heavy.
They're not great knives, but they're damned good, and for $40, the Tenacious particularly is hard to beat.

I'll be real. The Tenacious was my first Spyderco, and three years later, after owning a PM 2 & 3, an Endura, and a Delica......that's still one of my faves. That broad ffg blade cuts like literally NO other folder I own. If I was follicley gifted, I would feel comfortable shaving parts of my face with it.

I've just got the Spy Efficient, I've had a Tenacious before and I think the Efficient is an upgrade both in ergonomics and fit and finish. Love the little guy , you might want to check it out if you wanna try another budget Spyderco.
How did you get Martin Scorsese to narrate your knife video??
Would you guys recommend the one with black coating or just the satin one?
Honestly one of my favourite parts of these knives is the LACK of a choil. Too many knives these days have this huge chunk of cutting edge missing for something that I've personally never seen as functional. It's lead to my Persistence having roughly the same edge length as my Manix, and that doesn't sit right with me. For me; if you have the blade-grind begin at the end of the handle instead of having a choil; not only are you getting extra blade length, but you're also maintaining all that 'fine control' people are always saying that choils give you. Personally I'd take a knife with a deep finger-cutout as a 'finger stopper' and no choil over one with a choil, that'd prevent me slipping up onto the blade but also maintain maximum edge length on the knife. Just my thoughts.

For me, I really like the finger choil on my pm2. What I dont like is the little blade choil on most knives these days. All it does is get the blade hung up on whatever youre trying to cut. I like full blade. Even if I cant get that last little bit razor sharp, its still better than chunk missing at the bottom of the blade.
@HanlonRazor

I also do not like choils. Along with opening and cutting boxes, I also spend a lot of time outdoors. A choil means there is no cutting edge on one of the most useful parts of the blade.
Excellent review from 5 years ago now. While you have changed a little in the time as a reviewer, this is still an excellent review. Thanks Nick, fully agree as I have a Tenacious. Keep well - best Gray
When I was in the army I was a member of the honor guard for years, and it was my job to crawl into the belly of planes and cut the cardboard and plastic off of coffins and place the flag before they ceremoniously went down the conveyor belt. I had a persistence in my hand every time and it performed well.
I see the Tenacious is offered in black blade, but I can't seem to find a black blade version of the Persistence. Any idea where to find such an animal?
Have you reviewed the efficient yet?

The Tenacious was my first spyderco and since I bought and returned a manix 2 and bought and kept a para 2. Good knives all around I'd say.
Awesome Review! Love the Tenacious.
Nice review! Thanks
I have both the satin and black versions of the tenacious. As far as the action they both were rather stiff in particular the black model which was probably due to the powder coat on the blade. After some Tuff Glide and breaking them in while watching a movie(and yes cut my thumb also on the spydie hole with the satin model) they are both as smooth as any other liner lock I own and in particul the liner lock Spyderco's I own. Great knives, one would be hard pressed to beat them at this price. And well,That's just a beautiful thing.
Idk if you've already reviewed it(haven't seen it yet) but kershaw injection is a great value too!! Could you do a review someday for that knife too? Thank you
how can i smooth out the edges of the whole , my endura is too sharp
I had the resilience and it was my first spyderco. Im a fan of big blades but the blade seemed a little flimsy and fragile but I recently got the tenacious and it's a much better size but doesn't flip and close as nice as the resilience did.
When are you gonna check out the ambitious LW in S35VN? It is a great working knife that comes in under 2.5" and under $100

Always hearing your voice feels like fun coming up Nick. Thanks for the new video! I hate the pinned pivot screw... I wanna take it to pieces easy. Show some diamond file for those spiderholes. And drill some skeletonizing holes for those steel sides. To make them lighter. :) Rambling: Just got Spyderco PM2 for me and it took like seven minutes of I got it to my hands, it was in pieces already (drive from the post office to my home). @ViceCommando

+Nick Shabazz At least you don't always have to show them the tool in the warranty matter. I was told that they would send parts also, like screws and pivots. And as long as you know how to fix it, you can do it (maybe even better than they did). Same parts, better lube, better locktite for your use. It just up for yourself. And this blade you can sharpen yourself easy, its not too exotic. Warranty is for those who don't like doing that or cannot do it for most part.

I love the ergonomics on the persistence and the build but I wear size medium glove.pretty compact knife length wise when folded just a bit wide I will rotate this knife with my RAT 2 for EDC. they could easily make this knife lighter and keep it cheap they could make like 2.5 oz.
The first pocketknife i ever bought was a Tenacious. I LOVED that thing. Had some others since and had to sell them all off for cash. Was recently gifted an s110v pm2 which got me back into knives. Now have a Roadie and a Para 3 on the way for my two main carriers. Spyderco all the way for me!

Scott Eger Get it! It's a great steel! I've used it several times for things like zip ties to basic cutting tasks and it is still shaving sharp. The fact that they have a premium steel on a production knife for like 10 dollars more than the base pm2 is AMAZING. Not the biggest fan of the 'blurple' color (though that is just my opinion), but i love the knife! Only ordered the para 3 because the pm2 is just a little on the big side for my personal carry. But that is always subjective.

Coming back to this I hope they do a tenacious with something like VG-10.. I think it is a great knife for me, ergonomics work perfectly for me and so does the size.. It is just.. that steel.. It is alright but it could be better with a different steel.
personally I think the thickness isn't bad on these but I'm use to carrying a CRKT Krawford Casper which is a pretty thick knife. As for weight it doesn't even drag on my pocket, I can put it in there and totally not even feel it.
The Persistence was my first Spyderco. Afterards I bought a Sanrenmu 7010. Then I bought a Delica. Never could go round the lockback so I hardly ever used it. I used the Persistence and the Sanrenmu in EDC rotation. Then I bought a Para 2, so I sided the other 2 knives. I ended up giving the Persistence to my dad and the Delica to my brother as birthday gifts. Meanwhile I held the Para 2 as a permanent EDC. Until one fateful winter day, while helping my brother in law get his car out of the snow I lost my Para 2. So now, I am stuck with my Sanrenmu. But the funny thing is that the only knife I really miss is the Persistence.

I like these knives. The weight and thickness don’t bother me. I do wish they came with a little better steel like a Sandvik stainless or VG10.

Thanks Nick, The Tenacious is still a bench mark budget and the average street price is now around $57. Still a great value.

What is your opinion of these knives after 8 years?

honestly ......most people use their knife for opening a box or a clam pack ,trimming insulation on wire , zipping open a letter ,maybe cutting some string or cord. for that kind of cutting 8cr 13mov , is more than adequate. and the great benifit is that it is sooo easy to get scary sharp , and with an occassional touch up on a sharpening steel you can realistically go quite a long time between full resharpenings. Its a very capable EDC steel that unfairly gets a bad rap.

I actually have thought about buying a Spyderco several times but I kinda seem to be puzzling with the construction. It looks like it isnt build very sturdy and the handle material is always some sort of plastic/glassfibre/non organic stuff. Where is all that wonderful wood that is normaly used to handle scales? I know its very cheap to build the handle from plastic and Micarta and wood is very expensive but it just doesnt have the same feel as wood has that high end feel. I really find it hard to find propa hardwood scales combined with quality stainless steel. Its impossible. Im a old school guy and I sometimes it would be nice to actually buy a proper folder but looks like I will end up making one before I find that Crown Juwel.
By the time all the nit-pickin is done the knife went from 35 dollars to 125 dollars. Its supposed to be a Spyderco you can buy from Wall-mart and theres your budget blade.I like the Tenacious, its a great beater work knife for THIRTYFIVE bucks. Thanks Nick.

I wish I saw this before I bought the Persistence. I did not like it at all and returned it. I did not think it was at all appropriate for my intended EDC use, working in an office and slicing up food for lunch, etc. Too heavy in the pocket and a really big blade to flash in the break room.

I have the persistence and the Delica and I agree everything you said. But even at the price they're at I'd never recommend them over the Delica, save a bit more and get a much better blade, it's rare that $20ish makes such a difference in the knife world. This type of review is a great help to those of us just starting to collect on a budget. Sub $50 and sub $100 knives that are good values for the money.
My issue is in my opinion the semi stainless 8cr13mov balde steel when you can get the Byrd Raven 2 for $40 with CTS-BD1 steel which not only has better edge retention and toughness but in my experience is much more corrosion resistant. My Byrd Raven 2 has very good fit and finish for a $40 knife. The only issue I had was a little lock stick but it has beem gradually getting better and has not developed lock rock.
I really think the byrd crow 2 in bd1 steel is better than the persistence and the raven 2 also in bd1 being better then the tenacious
Gotta disagree with you on a few points, man. This is a knife that I look at and think "meh, I should sell that." The looks don't appeal to me, it's too large for my typical EDC and I'm snobbish when it comes to 8Cr13MoV. Then I hold it in hand and think "Nope. I'm hanging on to it." This is my around-the-house beater knife. For food prep, the blade is long and sharp enough to make the task easy. When working outside, I'm not afraid to thump on it because the blade steel will be easy to sharpen...and it won't cost me a kidney to replace it if I really screw up. In hand, it's one of the best-feeling knives I own. So for everyday carry, no. I reach for my Sages. Around the house, though, it finds regular use. I do agree that it's good value, especially if you have better luck with lower grade steel. I haven't checked your videos for it yet, but have you considered looking at the Spyderco Cat or Chicago? They look like they belong in the Tenacious line and are cheaper than the Delica.
I feel the Tenacious is like a slower little brother to the Manix 2. It's ergonomic, just not as much as the Manix. It fills the hand well, but is big as shit in the hand just like the Manix 2 (I hate that knife for it's ridiculous size).

I like the review, but why do you always say that byrd knives suck. I have had 4 of them and honestly, i never had a problem. I prefer some models to the spyderco sister company. Especially the price. My 2 cara cara's have bern great. I prefer it over the endura. Better ergonomics and the 8cr held a good edge. I get it, they are cheap, but i can buy 3 cara cara knives for the price of a vg10 endura. I had a crow in g10 and it was great. The finishing marks inside the frn handle of the cara cara was disappointing. By the way, i bought a tuff light and the edge chipped so much that it looked like a serrated. Lol. I always wondered if the tufflight was a knockoff. I did buy it from ebay. Maybe thats why it seemed like junk. Alot of my cold steel blades seemed junky after a few uses. Except my recon 1 and my holdout 3 in xhp. Those were very good. Good review. I wouldent condemn the byrd knives as a whole. Maybe you got poor examples. Have a great weekend!!
