Fun fact: the parachute was actually George Lazenby’s idea for OHMSS, but there was not enough budget and the producers and the director didn’t take Lazenby too seriously because he was inexperienced. One of the reasons Lazenby didn’t like to play Bond anymore.

The scene where Bond keeps quipping in the van while Jaws tears it apart actually came about because Barbara Bach in real life did not know how to drive the van. Roger ad-libbed all of James's lines and they decided to keep it and turn the escape into an additional action scene.

I love TSWLM, and this is a fantastic review as always! They’re getting longer and I’m all for it :) Two interesting facts about the Egyptian ruins scene: 1. In the shot you point out with Jaws walking along the scaffolding high above the ruins, it’s actually Roger Moore’s stuntman playing him. Richard Kiel was meant to climb up but was terrified of heights and couldn’t bring himself to do it so Rog’s stuntman did it instead, despite being about a foot shorter than Kiel. 2. Rog came up with the “Egyptian builders” line just before the scene was shot, but there was an Egyptian government rep on set watching everything closely, making sure the film was respectful. So, Gilbert and Moore agreed right before the shot that he should mouth the line rather than say it out loud, and dub it on later. The game was almost given away when the sound recordist shouted “we’ll have to do that again, I couldn’t hear Roger” but after Gilbert mouthed “shut up” frantically at him he got the message.

I couldn’t stop talking about The Spy Who Loved Me. He’s not terrifying in TSWLM. The first action we see with him in Egypt he’s running and looking awkward and then later on he drops a stone on his foot looking like a bungling idiot. Bond constantly got the better of him in the movie so he does not come off intimidating in the least. He was more goofy in Moonraker but he was not at all scary in TSWLM. You have to remember in 1977 wet bikes were not very common and for most people this was the first time they'd seen one in a movie or at all. Yes, it looks clunky by today's standards, but at the time it was a crowd pleasing moment. The scene when they begin to unpack the wet bike on the submarine and the way the captain looks at the handlebars as if to say he has no idea what they're making tells you everything. This was my first theatrical Bond movie (having seen some of the others on TV usually at Christmas or New Years) and as such has a very special place in my heart as it was non-stop entertainment from start to finish, so thank you for taking your time and giving it a really thorough review!

The Enemy Below is a great movie, especially because both captains are portrayed as human beings, the captain Curd Jürgens played wasn't some generic evil villain with a scar in his face and a German accent, and I believe that actual WW2 naval forces were as war-weary, disillusioned and yet duty-bound as the Germans and Americans depicted in the movie. Also, Star Trek's Balance of Terror is based on The Enemy Below.

I've made no secret that I'm not the biggest fan of Moore's interpretation of Bond but TSWLM is without a doubt his best film and most Bond-ian performance. Too often his films came close to outright self-parody but this just feels like proper Bond; like you could drop Goldfinger-era Connery into this film and it would still work. It definitely has a few weak points though and Stromberg is indeed a "meh" villain. It's a shame EON couldn't find a loophole in the McClory lawsuit and get a proper final appearance of a Donald Pleasance Blofeld who gave up on SPECTRE after YOLT and is now in business for himself like "Fuck it. I'm just gonna blow up the whole world." That would push this film into Top 5 territory easily. Great review as always, Calvin!

I will admit I am a big fan of the Roger Moore Bond. I enjoy him and his Bond movies very much. I will admit I like all the actors that have played Bond. I respect and enjoy all the characteristics that each actor brought to the role. I like the rough rugged elements of what Craig does and what Connery originally brought to the character. Dalton has some good rugged attributes as well. But I do enjoy Rogers proper elegance. He himself is not funny, it is the scenarios that he winds up in and the outcome of what happens that is funny. Roger still has his cold hearted killer moments. Like when he sends Loch off the cliff in FYEO and sends Sandor off the rooftop in TSWLM. Now Pierce is the combination of Sean and Roger with his own characteristics. He can be elegant and proper, but he can also be cold hearted and gritty depending on the situation and circumstances. He can be wreckless as well. But back to Roger, I understand the arguments against him and his movies because of the humor in them, but I don't understand why people still don't enjoy it? His movies are entertaining as hell, well choreographed, and very creative. Yes we are dealing with 70's and 80's technology, some of it is dated, but some of it is not. Alot of those stunts and shots were done for real and never been replicated since. I don't get why people get into the arguments of it was realistic or not. All movies are unrealistic because they are movies. They are all fake and creating a false reality. Just sit back and look at them as entertainment.

Great hearing your thoughts again on this film! Some things that stand out for me: - The Union Jack parachute cemented Bond as 'British heritage', so you will. And I adore that moment. Bond isn't chauvinist in this film, but there's a certain stiff upper lip mentality that I just love. - A hill that I will die on: Bond's monologue about killing and knowing the risks when he admits to killing Anya's boyfriend is Roger Moore's best acting moment as Bond ever. It's sincere but not too dramatic. Love, love, love it. - Quick shout-out to Michael G. Wilson who got his first proper cameo in this film! - I so much agree with you on the shots of Egypt and Bond and Anya walking in between the pillars. They're so grand, so majestic, so... Bond, really. Glad to see them getting some attention! - Lastly, I have a serious weak spot for Bond in naval uniform, and it's at its high peak here. Moore doesn't wear it like a costume, but as something he feels familiar and confident in. Compared to Brosnan in TND, I'd say I believe Moore more in the uniform.

It’s fun to hear you talk about the cinematography, as an old camera assistant and sometimes cinematographer myself. The Gilbert films are held in high regard when it comes to cinematography and Gilbert used some very fine DPs (Freddie Young for YOLT and Claue Renoir here) and they really do bring some artistry to the shots! Ted Moore, who shot the previous (except for OHMSS) was hired because he was fast and cheap - and a lot of his work looks like it. That was also why the previous Guy Hamilton were in flat widescreen and not anamorphic: to save money. Shooting anamorphic does not just mean more expensive lenses but a lot more light as well, bringing up cost quite a bit!

I love Man with the Golden Gun, but can understand why others dislike it. The villain however is my absolute favorite because...well Christopher Lee. Maybe I overlook some of the flaws of the movie because I'm just such a Lee fanboy. Scaramanga also had one of the coolest villain lairs hidden away in that Island and one of my favorite henchmen who felt like a good compliment to his character.

16:20 The scene at the ruins was actually shot at separate temples in different parts of Egypt but whoever did the cinematography did a great job convincing audiences it was in one location. The Egyptian builders line was dubbed in during post production after they left Egypt because there was a guide who supervised the entire Egyptian filming so that Egypt wouldn't be seen in an unflattering light, ironically Egyptian audiences found the line to be hilarious.

Glad to hear you’re also a big fan of this one! It’s tough with Stromberg because he’s often slated and I saw him appear in a lot of people’s worst Bond villain category on the various Bond social media challenges that have been going on but really, I don’t think it’s a bad performance or even badly written it all just amounts to something very mediocre... still, the film is fantastic regardless!

I don’t agree that they were lackluster. I loved Live and Let Die, but it did seem on a lower budget scale than previous “epic megomaniacal world domination” Bond movies. I would agree about “Golden Gun”, which felt EXTREMELY low budget! TSWLM definitely was the first to bring Moore’s Bond into a grand scale plot line, (ever if ridiculous and over the top, and stole a LOT from YOLT)!!

Thank you so much for this review, Calvin! As I said a couple of times, TSWLM is my all time favourite Bond Film. Not only because of Barbara Bach (who easily outplays Naomi, the blonde skihut woman and the receptionist), but because of the political statement in 1977 midst of cold war to let MI6 and KGB director talk to each other as they were best friends since their common fight in WWII. As you said, Amasowas strength is sacrificed the longer the film goes... As an Austrian, I love Curd Jürgens - he starts quite soft (comparable to Michael Londsdale), but increases his madness (creating a new, clean, ecological improved world...intresting to say this today...) till the end. While other villains were rather brutal or at first glimpse bad, I think with Scaramanga they gave us a man with a history (revenge his Elephant as a teenage circus artist), going one step further with Stromberg and Drax who have not a personal motive, but a great idea (in oposition to Dr. No or Blofeld who almost tried the same but for ransom). I had a great laugh hearing 'under the see', your explantaion of the emerging or erecting submarine ( I missed the scene with Barbara under the shower while the sailor delivers the message to the captain - who mysteriously stayed in the room, while Anya showered...) and - as always - enjoyed your charisma - sometimes - meant as a compliment - a bit like Boris Grishenko ;-) Two questions aroused during your explanation: Why does Bond has to defuse the warhead by himself - aren't there not enough weapons officers on the three submarines??? Second question is: Who has to pay for two (one USSR, one USA) destroyed submarines by a british agent??

Subsequently, a load of women from his past come out to tell their stories, such as the clinic lady he blackmails in Thunderball, Miss Galore with how he forced himself on her in the hay barn, Tatiana Romanova and Scaramanga's ex-mistress who he slapped around...

I dunno. I always got the impression she's in on it, as she takes ages to say No. And Sandor takes ages if it's a surprise attack. And it's like you can see the moral dilemma in her eyes. So I got the impression she's hired as a distraction, and then when it comes to it she changes her mind, as either she really likes Bond, or luring a man to his death chills her when it actually happens.

Personally I think the second half was a bit stronger than the first -- largely down to the music in the first half seeming to switch between moods in really jarring ways, and generally never letting up. In the second half the soundtrack's more subdued and seems more confident. That's certainly not a bad way to lay out a movie though. It just makes for a few strange moments. The only other thing that bugged me was the end -- I get that Anya was supposed to be having a "kiss him or kill him" dilemma but the way it's played out while the movie rushes to finish itself doesn't really have enough time to show that properly, and it almost feels more like they just didn't resolve one of the most interesting subplots in the movie. I would have really liked to see the characters given just a few more minutes at the end there to pay it off, because all that tension around Bond having killed her lover and her eventually finding out and wanting him dead really was one of the best parts of the film.

However, the world is so messed up now I do agree with Calvin that I think we could do with a move back towards more escapist Bond movies. I 've certainly really enjoyed watching it again more recently. Something for Eon to consider, rather than going for someone nearly identical (but likely weaker) than DC after No Time To Die. Trivia! Marvin Hamlisch did the score for this one and he also wrote the music for A Chorus Line, which features a finale song called One and the version of the title song we hear after Bond pulls the curtain down is a reference to that song in the musical. Not many would catch that as the audiences for Bond movies are not necessarily musical fans. Lol

I agree. I just started getting into James Bond and am currently watching them in order. I remember watching "The Spy Who Loved Me" back when it was shown on ABC Sunday Night movie and really liking it. But after watching "Live and Let Die" for the first time, I like it a little better than Spy.

Due to the seriousness of the scene with Bond and the sub's captain @43:03, it's easy to miss one of the best double entendres in the show: "I have to get her off"

Right up my street this review. Obviously a fan of the franchise who forgives its clunky plot drivers but provides a great analysis of the mechanics of producing film. Big fan of your channel.

I actually like Stromberg‘s death, I know he gets to shoot his bolt, but Bond shooting him feels almost like an execution, compared to other boss gimmick deaths.

Excellent review. I just re-watched this today for the first time in a very long time and I loved every minute of it, it really holds up well and was throughly enjoyable. I first saw the Spy Who Loved Me around '77 when I was about 5 or six years old - my family was still living in Düsseldorf at that time. It was the first time I went to go see "the new Bond film" with my father, a tradition we kept up until his passing a few years ago. I remember watching that opening ski-battle on the edge of my seat and my eyes wide open, and then the crowd cheering in unison when that Union Jack parachute unfurled across the big, bright screen (it was an English-language theater so I imagine that this may have had something to do with the audience's very enthusiastic response). It's one of my clearest and dearest memories from my childhood and cemented my love for the franchise from that point on. Incidentally, as I was a just a little tot when I first saw the film, the Lotus scene was actually a complete surprise to me. It literally blew my mind and I was convinced that the submarine Esprit was something that actually existed somewhere in the real world. I recall asking my dad repeatedly about it and being unfazed by his constant insistence that it was all just a movie trick - it looked so real to me at the time! So many great memories with this flick, it's Bond firing on all cylinders and going the distance. Thumbs up, all the way!

I think the only thing that would have improved this film would have been having Anya kill Stromberg on Atlantis instead of Bond. He could’ve tied her up, and then she could’ve escaped as Bond fought Jaws. Then, she could have killed Stromberg in some cool fashion or something and have Bond arrive after dispatching Jaws only to see her in total control of the situation. I think that would’ve made her more of an equal to Bond and improved on Stromberg’s death scene in one fell swoop.

Such a great movie, has always been in my top 3 Bonds. I don't why I like both YOLT and this so much, I guess the epic scale really appeals to me. And this film also has a lot of heart.
