One time in a wrestling show in Wellington New Zealand in the late 70s. Ox Baker was on the show. During another match Ox unexpectedly came out of the dressing room, went up the stairs and sat down by himself. Within a few minutes the children were (somewhat nervously at first) approaching him and talking to him. He was a real heel at the time and had already laid low several wrestlers with his heart punch. But instead of acting like a heel Ox was signing autograpns, talking, joking and making fake punches with the kids and after a while he had a little crowd around him. Completely out of his ring heel character. Inside the ring Ox was a true heel, outside the ring he was a gentleman.

I miss this era of Wrestling so much. Ox Baker was one of the nicest wrestlers I ever had the pleasure to meet. I grew up in Gordon Alabama...about 20 miles south of Dothan Alabama... In 1978 I was 9 yrs old & Ox Baker was Wrestling for the Southeastern Championship Wrestling territory in Dothan Alabama owned by Ron & Robert Fuller. Me & my dad were at the Houston Co Farm Center one Saturday night & I was standing by my dad when Ox Baker walked thru the doors. HE SCARED ME TO DEATH WHEN I SAW HIM!!! I remember I had a small notebook & a pen in my hand & I guess Ox saw it, then Ox looked at me & said "I guess you want my autograph, well if you want it, you can come to me, I'm not coming to you." I remember my dad nudging over to him. THIS IS HOW NICE OX BAKER WAS TO ME... When I walked over...Ox actually dropped down to one knee, stuck his hand out, smiled real big & said "Ox Baker...glad to meet you, now who are you"? I told him my name was Randy & then Ox said "well, Randy glad to meet you". He signed my notebook & put his huge arm around me & said "Randy, I could really use your help tonight, I'm Wrestling Ron Fuller & I'm gonna need all the help I can get tonight, do you think you could cheer for me tonight & help me"? MAN...THAT NIGHT I BECAME THE BIGGEST OX BAKER FAN EVER!!! I remember jumping around & cheering for him so much, that my dad had to tell me many times to sit down before I fell off the concrete bleachers and killed myself. I remember Ox lost by disqualification that night BUT I DIDN'T CARE!!! I was so sad to hear that Ox had died a few years ago, I always wanted to see him again & remind him about that Saturday night at the Houston Co Farm Center & tell him JUST HOW MUCH THAT NIGHT MEANT TO ME & THAT I HAD REMEMBERED THAT NIGHT ALL THESE YEARS LATER!!! I'm 51 yrs old now...and yes I still have that notebook after all these years with Ox Baker signature & a lot of other wrestlers signatures put up in my small Man-cave!!! Much love from Mobile Alabama.

Great story. My boy crush growing up was Don Jardine a other identity, Super Destroyer, who was really a terror in Mid-Atlantic Wrestling back in '73-'74 for about two great years. I tracked him down online in fall '04 and told him how much I enjoyed his efforts when I was a boy. He got a kick out of it and invited me up to see him and Mrs Spoiler in the wilds of north central Canada. Trouble is, I forgot how important it was to stay a kid...and I never went. He died in 12/06.

I loved him when I was 12-14 watching him in the old Mid-Atlantic Wrestling territory (Carolinas, Virginia) as The Super Destroyer. He was my hero. In fall '04, after I got my first pc, I found his web site, run by his wife and E-mailed him. We had a pretty good exchange there for a while. He was suck even then and passed in 12/06. He invited me up to see him. I should've gone.

I’ll never forget I was 14 and Ox was at a local show around 2007ish, we were talking about wrestling and I knew nothing but wanted to be a wrestler so bad. He said “ how old are you”? I said “14” he said “if you want you can sign up and we’ll book ya” clearly he was joking but he was so lighthearted and very intimidating until you actually talk to him he’s really nice.

I spent two years loving his other title, Super Destroyer, in the old Mid-Atlantic Wrestling territory. He had some epic action with The Avenger, Sonny King, Squawhoo, Thunderbolt Patterson, Bearcat Wright, Paul Jones; rarely did tag team but when he did he teamed with Johnny The Hammer Valentine and that epic.

Back when the guys knew how to work, and it wasn't a spot fest, flippy-shit extravagaza, ropes didn't need to be banjo string tight. The tighter they are the faster they wear out=co$t to the promoter. AWA and SWCW always had them looser than some others.CWF in 70's also.
