An oil soaked mud floor covered with cardboard, no air tools, no hydraulic presses, not a torque wrench in sight, zero H&S....just get a tin bowl, a bit of rag, half a pint of petrol and get the parts cleaned. Then whack it all back together with a big hammer and an old coach bolt....no need for fancy drifts. That done, tighten it all up by bouncing your body weight on a long lever.....you have to see it to believe it. Amazing.

I work with my dad pretty much the same way back in the mid 1960’s to 1971 on water trucks we owned in California. Clean cardboard was you friend either to lay on, or repair parts. Back then we used gas to clean parts at around $0.30 a gallon it was the cheapest cleaner you could find and always around. It wasn’t until just before his passing in 1971 we had a service truck, it had a welder and compressor on a flat bed. Other kids got to play after school or during summer months, my fun was helping dad!

As I see as a truck mechanic, it was a completely good axle gear, with minimal wearing. The spider gears work only in road turns, this wear they showed on the shaft impossible to notice, and not matter at all. They are made mistakes, because the bearings of an axle gear not bearings of a wheel, they should be much tigther, they need pretension, so they not so easy to rotate. How they adjusted the bearings is good for an old axle gear, but not an axle gear with new bearings. I respect those people, they can work from nothing, without tools and mostly special tools, I know what it is. Still I suggest to them to read repair technology from any kind, because there are some traps in those truck and car parts, and if they know the proper technology for assambly, they can do this without special tools and measure tools also. I read many Scania repair technology, they have very good books. I wonder what was the complaint of the customer.

+1. They disassembled the gear on the ground(!) using only hammers, and re-assembled without proper tensioning. Stupid procedure. I think it would be better if they empty it, fill with diesel or kerosene, make it turn with some motor or even by hands during 10 min and re-fill with proper lubricant. At least, in this case they wouldn't change tension and wouldn't put some sand dust inside.

I don't know what they're cleaning those parts with, but it reminds me of when I overhauled a Holley back in 1975 with that canned carb dip... and no gloves. It took EVERY DROP of natural oils out of my hands, and they turned white and cracked and bled and hurt like a BITCH for about two weeks. It was a hard learned lesson for sure.

Only western culture pampers and spoils it's children to the detriment of society. The young boys helping, have learned a trade and are more responsible and have better work ethic than 80% or more of our society. I'll wager their teen suicide rate is virtually nonexistent. Their doctors aren't prescribing anti depressants and none of those workers have even heard of ADHD or any of the other acronyms passed around in the west.

@@lostpacket Yep. Plus pounding instead of pressing will result in a much shorter bearing life. Those hits create a tiny bit of distortion that cause wear over time. Especially bad is when they pound on the end of the shaft to drive the bearing housing in. The really hard rollers and race will create micro-dents that will become a spall point.
