Who doesn't give him recognition?!..Anyone who's into rock and soul from back in the day knows Steve..Dude was singing in clubs when he was 15!..In fact, I think Jimmy Page told Clapton that there's this 15 year old kid down at one of the clubs who's singing Ray Charles and sounds a lot like him..Clapton thought he was nuts, then he heard him..There are videos of him singing Ray's music, when he was in his teens!..Crazy!

This was written during a lunch break from a recording session when they were looking for the band's next single. It was, of course, a massive hit. Steve was still in his late teens.

Stevie Winwood has to be recognized as a awesome success. He started at age 14

Ah, the summer of 1967 and this song seemed to be playing constantly on the jukebox at our neighborhood pool. Good times.

Steve Winwood was 15 years old when he sang this song.

Dude was still a teenager when this was recorded, but doggone if he didn't have a full-grown man's voice already!! (I stull think his "Arc of A Diver" and the Grammy-winning "Back In The High Life" LP.. And yes, the British were very soul music savvy..When both Motown and Stax toured there in the 60's, our music became a "Must Listen" even more!

We’ve ALWAYS loved soul music over here across the pond. Our music is inextricably linked. Gotta say though,your current output over there is extremely low quality compared to yours and our musical heritage. In short,todays “music” is dire shit.

Please note, Steve Winwood was SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD when he co-wrote and sang lead on this classic. He also played keyboard and organ. The man is a vastly underrated talent.

Steve Winwood joined Spencer Davis Group when he was 14!

All of the British Invastion musicians were inspired to US blues. Steve's huge infuence is Ray Charles among many others. Besides Ray Charles, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, BB King, Buddy Guy, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown & Buddy Holly were major influences on all of them. Steve was in the band Traffic after Spencer Davis Group, and they did a lot of jazz, blues, rock, folk combination sounds, really amazing. Their song Dear Mr Fantasy was used by Marvel as the opening song for The Avengers Endgame. The old music is so much better than today's music, it keeps getting used 50 yrs later.

When this song was first released there was a common reaction from DJs, Spencer Davis Group fans, and music critics. They all were surprised that a man that young (late teens) could sing with so much soul.

Teenage Steve sounding like an old blues singer!

Even back in the day we couldn't figure out how a 15 year old white kid from Birmingham England sounded like a 40 year old Ray Charles. Steve was unbelievable from the git-go. I checked off my bucket list twice seeing him in concert with Eric Clapton in Denver (They blew the roof off the joint) and with his quintet at a Hard Rock Hotel in a more intimate setting. That little group cooked for 2.5 hours before we could exhale. Top line- professional and clean sounds.

I’ll always think about “The Big Chill” when I hear this song. It explained everything and was a great movie for it. 😁❤️

Steve Winwood was only about 17 when this was recorded. He went on to have a successful solo career. Check out "higher love" with Chaka khan.

I always loved it that the really great Brit bands truly loved the blues and soul music. So it went to Britain, they interpreted their own way and made famous the old bluesmen who should have been famous all along (at this stage the music was often labelled "race music" in the States). And many of those old black men were then given the audience they deserved as they toured Europe and Britain, introduced by those young white boys who idolised them. SO glad that they could get to do this in their later years before they passed away. Now it's those "young, white boys" who are passing away.

There is YT video of the kids dancing to this on American Bandstand from 1967. Kind of fun to watch that you can tell the kids had a good time dancing to this one.

@@TheAdventuresofTNT Guys the list of British bands and musicians invading America was huge, they came in different times 60’s, 70’s and 80’s some names the are familiar for you Erick Clapton, Jeff Beck, Rob Steward, Phill Collins, Elton John, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Rick Astley and many more 😊.

Fun fact -- they called themselves The Spencer Davis Group because he was the only member who was willing to get up early to do interviews. The Blues Brothers did a respectable version of this. And there was a movie about 30 years ago called The Commitments that you might like. Look into the backstory.

Steve Winwood is such an underrated huge contributor to the musical landscape. Looking at his face on the cover is almost the same as his smile at the end of his video covering his Blind Faith song "Can't find my way home" with just his guitar and his amazing voice. Look for it and John Barleycorn must die on his personal KZread page for a treat!

He was also in a supergroup with Eric Clapton called Blind Faith but I would avoid that if I was you, they did one album and the album cover art is of a topless 11 year old girl. They were originally going to have a 14 year old do it but they decided she was too old and developed so asked her younger sister to do it instead and she was told if she did it they would buy her a pony, they ended up giving her £40 which is about $700 in todays money. I genuinely can’t believe that that album cover is still universally used on all platforms today or maybe I shouldn’t be that surprised now I think about it, things seem to be going in the direction of making that kind of thing socially acceptable these days. So if you don’t want to scared by it like I was, don’t google or react to anything Blind Faith because the likelihood is you will end up seeing that album cover, just a warning incase someone suggests it because Steve Winwood is in Blind Faith

They don't have to avoid Blind Faith, just don't show the album cover. I Can't Find My Way Home is on that album and is a rock classic & been covered by many artists. An absolute must listen.

@@jenniferfoster1692 like I said, if they don’t want to be subjected to seeing it then they should avoid it because there is a very strong likelihood that they will see it, it has nothing to do with using the cover as a thumbnail or having it shown on screen. I am simply warning them that there is an extremely high possibility that if they search for blind faith on any platform, they will see the album cover. Some people in the world don’t want to see that kind of thing, so as someone who is considerate, I am prewarning them as any considerate person should do. It’s been decades since I saw it and I can’t unsee it and I have very strong views about that kind of thing, it’s disgusting, it’s rightfully illegal and it should not exist, I don’t care what lame justifications people use to defend it, it’s indefensible

Grew up hearing The SDG and Traffic blasting from my older brother's room. Arc of The Diver was the Winwood album I played endlessly in my late teens.Then he was discovered en masse, it seemed, like Springsteen after Born In The USA. Incredible standard of excellence over decades. Pity many people only know the beer ad tune.

First time I heard this was in Iron Eagle when I was 10, then again in Days of Thunder. Great song.

What happened to Spencer Davis group? Spencer Davis - Wikipedia The Spencer Davis Group continued after Winwood left to form Traffic in April 1967. The group recorded two more albums before splitting in 1969. Another version of the group with Davis and York appeared in 1973 and disbanded in late 1974. Various incarnations of the band toured in later years under Davis's direction.

SDG's song "Keep On Running" is also a classic, and Winwood went on to create great music with Traffic, Blind Faith, and as a soloist. Muff is Steve's brother. Blues and soul were vital to the British scene - there's a style called "Northern Soul" (similar to US "Blue-eyed Soul") - bands like Them, The Animals, and Them's lead singer Van Morrison solo.

Winwood is a giant… hits and great albums with Spencer Davis group (at 17)… Blind Faith, Traffic, and solo.

There is a genre within Ireland and Britain called Northern Soul, they cover a lot of the old American Soul artists. Some really good music out there.

I don`t think thats quite true, Northern Soul is particular to the North of England not Britain as a whole or Ireland. Thats how it got its name.

"keep on running" is another good one by them

The Blues Brothers also had their version Give me some lovin (1980).

As an English man I always hear the Tea and Crumpets comment 😂 Tea and Crumpets are lovely! I Highly recommend Geno Washington and the Ram Jam band. Michael is an amazing song. Anything from the Out of this World album is also amazing.

You should try a Scottish band from the early 70s called MIDDLE OF THE ROAD there a very underrated they had 5 hits in one year in the UK charts

British artist did respect American Blues artist. Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ringo Starr, Klauss Vooorman, Ian Stewart, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman (of the Rolling Stones) were all happy to perform together for the awesome Howlin' Wolf album called 'London Sessions' back in 1971. This album is a true classic. Check it out.
