I absolutely love how Spectacular diverged from making Norman the crazy scientist with a split personality. He was in control the entire time which makes everything he did and said that much more evil and sadistic. "We all wear masks Spider-man, but which one is real? The one that hides your face, or the one that is your face."

Exactly! The lucid evil Norman is *by far* my favorite version of the character. I know that "Jekyll and Hyde" tragic Norman is far more prevalent and popular, but I never got the appeal. For me, the split personality robs Norman of agency and moral culpability as a villain. Split personality centers the conflict around Norman's mental illness, rather than his villainous philosophy. As a result you can rarely see Spider-Man opposing Green Goblin on a philosophical level, it is mostly about stopping a crazed lunatic. Even when some works do give Norman/Goblin some sort of philosophy, like in No Way Home, authenticity of the character is highly questionable. It is not the actual person holding those views talking, it is serum (basically cocaine) talking. That makes Goblin's philosophy seem less serious and relevant, which just flattens the character all around. Lucid Norman is rare, but I believe only that version truly explores the character's potential as a villain. You have to take him seriously, you can't excuse him and you pay close attention to what he does and why he does it. Unlike other Spidey villains, he truly subscribes to a particularly dark Nietzschean worldview. Vast majority of other villains are misguided, confused, damaged or selfish, but they are not consciously immoral like Norman. He makes a conscious choice to embrace self-gratification as a value and a belief system. From his perspective, individuals should strive to accumulate power, dominate others and indulge themselves in whatever they fancy. He truly considers himself to be an ultimate predator, who is well within his rights to prey on weak and defenseless, and if they can't stop him, it is their own fault for being powerless. In fact he enjoys being predator so much that he is not content with merely exploiting others as a CEO and goes full serial killer as Goblin. In that sense he is eerily similar to Patrick Bateman. His dark worldview is present in most versions of Goblin, but it is rarely articulated well and it is not treated seriously enough because of Norman's mental illness. When Norman is lucid and concsiously goes dark Nietzschean, he becomes a true thematic opposite of Peter Parker. Peter's belief system is fundamentally altruistic in nature. He believes in helping people, expecting nothing in return. More than that, he knows that helping others may only bring himself more problems, but he does it anyway. He feels like he has to help because with great power comes great responsibility. Peter chooses to be a public servant in a more enlightened understanding of a term, which is total opposite to Norman, who chooses to be a predator of public. If both Peter and Norman are lucid their conflict turns into a true battle of worldviews. In that scenario Peter does not have to just beat up a crazed freak in green costume. Instead he has to prove with his actions that Norman's dark belief system is wrong. Those stories are among my favorite and they do showcase the best in Peter. It is similar to how Superman doesn't have to just beat Lex Luthor, he has to prove Lex wrong. Same with Batman and Joker. Fundamental antithesis to a hero's core beliefs is what separates that hero's archenemy from other villains. Sadly, with Norman it is very rare to see this theme explored fully. It happens only with a saner Norman in few comic books and, of course, in the Spectacular Spider-Man.

@@tentonmotto6779 I see the ideal incarnation of him as one where the serum merely amplifies what's already there. That normally, out of pragmatism, Norman avoids being a masked super-villain. After all, he's already getting away with so much, and he's smart enough to know its probably not worth the insane risks. But with the serum amplifying not only his capabilities, but his ego, ambition, confidence, and cruelty to further heights, he acts on his desires much more directly, flamboyant, and openly than before, believing he can get away with it. He still hides his identity of course, but the difference between the goblin and Norman is one of actions and methods, as opposed to beliefs. One goes about things like Lex Luthor would, the other operates more like the Joker, but they are the same guy with the same motives, philosophy and heartlessness. Just one is more cautious and the other likes to cackle evily for no reason.
