    Michael Shannon for the win. His performance as Zod is great; just when you think he's only capable of following military protocol and is almost like a terminator-style robot out of control, you glimpse the more "human" side of him, which has been driven mad from rage at the death of krypton and his ultimate failure to protect it (with his coup or otherwise), as he sees it. This movie was so underrated.

    Really the best version of General Zod, and I was an OG Donner/Reeve Superman kid. I want a Krypton-based prequel with Jor-El, Zod, Faora, Lara, _et. al._ I can't get enough of the Krypton scenes in MoS. And Zod is a tragic figure, more of a "fallen hero" than a "villain".

  • @BenCulture

    Superman is always going to be shoved aside as long as Henry Cavill plays the role. Cavill does "subtle" very well, but when he has to go "big", it doesn't work. His "evil" face expressions in the Knightmare dream sequence look more like constipation than emotion. He just doesn't have the range. Compare his post-killing scream in MoS to Reeve's roar in _Superman_ 1978 when he finds Lois dead.

    I think Snyder just wanted to make dark and deconstructionist movies, like _Watchmen,_ and he had to find out the hard way it doesn't work so well on Superman, compared to Batman.

    I found him to be incredibly sympathetic, his attempted coup, trying to recover the codex, all very understandable. The only thing he crossed the line with was his willingness to eradicate another sentient species, yet even then I get the sense that the situation had driven him to a desperate madness by then.

    But humans do this all the time. The Romans did it to the Celts. The Europeans did it to the native americans. To Zod, a man with spaceships, powered armor, and heat vision, human's wouldn't even have been like the indians were to the Europeans. We would have seemed like ants or roaches or any other kind pest.

    @106767988740599159842 It really is. What's sad is that I'm the only person in my family that loved the film. My sister hated it cause she felt the action was too long and unnecessary (guess she liked watching Superman do nothing but lift things and getting his ass kicked by Kevin Spacey in Superman Returns), and my parents thought the action was too intense and didn't like that Superman kills. I guess they're still expecting a Christopher Reeves Superman film. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Reeves-Donner films, but in my opinion this was the Superman film I had been waiting for. The action sequences made me nostalgic cause it reminded me of the animated series that I loved watching as a kid (and DBZ, maybe Snyder and Nolan will give us the Dragonball film we deserve). Also, I was really impressed with Russell Crowe's portrayal of Jor El and Michael Shannon's portrayal of Zod. I'm really looking forward to the next film.

    wcw2793 I'm totally with you on Man of Steel (my family loves it along with me, but I do feel like most people seem to hate it), but I'm quite concerned about the next movie. I was hoping for Superman to have a kind of trilogy of his own (I know, I know, we already see way too many sequels and whatnot, but this is the Superman I've been waiting to see) before introducing him to the other superheroes, or at least the first two are before that. The second movie I was hoping would introduce a proper Lex Luthor, the charismatic businessman as opposed to the genius mad scientist. He's obviously Superman's most elemental enemy, and their conflict is the most interesting aspect of Superman, that he must defeat him with kindness rather than his boundless strength. The Donner films explore this to some extent, but it misses a very important element: Lex Luthor must have a sway on the public, and it's a large part of the reason why Superman can't just break him with brute force. But instead of that movie, we're getting what seems like it's going to be a bloated mess that won't resonate with audiences. So now we're introducing Batman suddenly into Superman's world, and ostensibly he will initially be the antagonist (since it's called Batman vs Superman) but I highly doubt they'll remain enemies the entire movie. The problem is that, if the true antagonist turns out to be Lex Luthor, an interesting problem arises in that, suprisingly enough, he's really too much like Bruce Wayne/Batman. Maybe the parallels will be made intentional, but I feel it takes away from his and Superman's elemental struggle. And then Wonder Woman is also involved, somehow. It sounds a bit like too much for one movie, and only just after this version of Superman has been introduced. And the problem is, audiences don't like this Superman. Sure, we do, but we're the exception. I was really hoping they would be able to really turn around people's opinion on this Superman with a Lex Luthor movie where he does what he's meant to do -- protect people, and not kill -- before getting him involved with the other superheroes. With this much going on, much of it just completely out of nowhere, including its own internal reboot of Batman, introducing the first big-budget film version of Wonder Woman, and who knows what villains of Batman's and Superman's may be involved, it sounds like it's just going to be a mess of a movie, and I don't think Snyder's up to the task. I don't have high hopes for it. I mean, I hope I'm wrong and I'm blown away when I finally see it, but what I'm seeing so far concerns me. On a completely different subject, I also agree that Zack Snyder should totally do a DBZ movie.

  • @wcw2793

    @wcw2793

    I agree with what you're saying about the sequel, but who knows maybe the film will be called "World's Finest" (as it should be, just my opinion). Also, I'm really hoping that we not only get a great Lex Luthor, but Brainiac as well. Brainiac is one of those villains that I would definitely like to see be adapted onto the big screen.

    This is one of the reasons why this movie is so good: you can understand Zod's motivations and frustrations, he is fighting to protect HIS people, hence the movie's conflict is all the more interesting and complex because of that. It's not as simple as "good vs bad". Its a clash of heroes, a clash of titans, and a clash of ideals (freedom vs planned society).

    The last part of this music really sums up Zod: a man of honour, blinded by his single-minded devotion to his purpose. A tragic figure. Do not rejoice at his death, mourn that a great man has fallen. Kal-El recognized this and that is why his scream (after killing Zod) was so chilling and real. He's not really a villain, just a kryptonian whose ideals encountered unfavourable circumstances; a patriot of extreme proportions, a victim of a society lost in its conceit and short-sightedness. May we learn the lessons to be learnt from the character of General Zod!

So it's great to see people sharing in my love for this specific work of Zimmer, adding to a cultural momentum that in my opinion this score deserves. It's conscious approach to minimalism, to very soulful direct transitions from emotion and ideals into music, and to the brilliant sound design is, as far as it stands currently, under appreciated I feel. So thanks guys!

    2:20 to 3:33 is one of the, if not *the* best piece of music from Man of Steel. Truly beautiful and fitting for Zod. I remember when I heard that the first time in the MoS trailer back in 2013, still gives me the chills everytime I watch it. Thanks for uploading.

    Honestly what makes this so brilliant is that if you didn’t watch the movie and just listened to this soundtrack until the super orchestral ending you would think at the end Zod turned into a good guy but he didn’t. It adds a fantastic element of tragedy to his character that I love, he just wanted what’s best for his people. Arguably the best CBM ever 🙏

    In our time of rising populism and authoritarian figures, Zod is an incredibly relevant character that echoes from the roots of Western Greco-Roman-Euro-American culture. Plato's Republic envisioned a utopian society where classes were strictly defined and special guardians were molded from birth to protect the sovereignty and security of the state. Krypton is therefore a version of that on a planetary scale, reminiscent of the Sarkar game and the four castes of society: Workers, Warriors, Intellectuals, and Entrepreneurs. While Plato and Jor-el believed in the ascendancy of philosopher kings, in the enlightened and reasoned guiding the republic imperiously towards Truth, Zod had a different vision for society. Jor-el wished for society to be reformed through contemplation and higher scientific principles; Zod saw only that society could be redeemed by authority and order. Both revolted against the suffocating shortsightedness and arbitrary legalities of the bureaucrats, politicians, lawyers, and industry, in steadily marching their civilization towards ruin and extinction. What differed was the means by which they chose to act: Jor-El through Reason, Science, and Philosophy; Zod through Might, Authority, and Militancy. In the end, it was fated to come down to both of them. Just as Socrates debated Glaucon, Jor-el bitterly opposed Zod's vision for a new Krypton and so did his son. In the end, it always comes down to a choice between the dove and the hawk, the word and the sword, and the water and the fire. While I know what side I will ultimately come down on, I still admire and sympathize with Zod. You can argue with his methods and means, but not his dedication and willingness to sacrifice himself to redeem a sundered home, a lost people, and the vision of a glorious civilization reborn.
