The Spanish are HYPOCRITES for Demanding Britain Return Gibraltar. It's British Sovereign Territory

Foreign Secretary David, Lord Cameron is having crucial negotiations with Spain and Gibraltar over a new treaty to allow goods and peoples to cross from Gibraltar into the European Union. Historian and broadcaster Rafe Heydel-Mankoo explains Spain's controversial claims to the British Overseas Territory.
He points out Spanish hypocrisy given that Spain has possession of two enclaves in North Africa (Melilla & Ceuta) which were taken from Morocco and which Morocco wants to have back.

Sorry, but the late Lady Thatcher wasn’t immune to such weakness. It was her government which ceded Hong Kong back to China. Rafe is wrong about Hong Kong - only the “New Territories” were subject to a 100 year lease, and both Hong Kong Island and Kowloon were British sovereign territory. Shamefully, the citizens were not consulted about being handed over to permanent subjugation from Beijing.

As a third party and an unofficial historian, i know that Gilbratar a British overseas territory was ceded to Britain by treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Having known Gilbratar for some time, the inhabitants of that small island are more pro British than Spanish. Let the Island and the people remain a British overseas territory! And, on a similar theme, when is Russia going to voluntarily surrender the exclave of Kaliningrad back to Poland? The only difference is that Britain lawfully acquired Gibraltar over 200 years ago. The Soviet Union unlawfully seized Kaliningrad from Poland, with military force, less than 80 years ago.

Quick correction Rafe, Hong Kong Island was ceded in perpetuity as per the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 and Kowloon under the Convention of Peking in 1860. It was the New Territories that remained on the 99 year lease. Granted, the circumstances were different between Hong Kong and Gibraltar. The biggest mistake the British government made was not allowing Hong Kongers to choose their own destiny, like they did with the Falklands and Gibraltar. That should have happened decades before the Hong Kong handover. In any case, it would have been indefensible by 1997 and highlights the reality that the UK is much, much weaker than its colonial past. Rumor has it that Deng Xiaoping told Margaret Thatcher that he would "simply turn off the water" to Hong Kong if Britain didn't hand it back, although the official record states that he could "take Hong Kong in a day" if he wanted to. I remember reading a superb article back in 1999 called "How the British Lost Hong Kong" but unable to find any remnants of it. I'm sure it's in some newspaper archive somewhere. EDIT: This I believe you already knew and acknowledge that time was short in the interview.
