The Southgate Years: How England Roared Back

Спорт

Following a dismal showing at Euro 2016, England ended their relationship with Roy Hodgson and sought a new manager. Scandal and sting soon emerged which led to Gareth Southgate emerging as England manager, to a collective apathy. Since though, the former defender has elevated the Three Lions back to the elite of international football. However, England still remain trophyless since 1966, and is Gareth Southgate cut out to end that baron run? Join me.

Sadly I've since had to take that video down, but I may look at sharing the unlisted link at a later date. - Next up on the Channel will be a Euro 2004 retrospect as we approach the 20th anniversary of the tournament. - Let me know your opinion on the always divisive, Gareth Southgate! - Thanks for watching and take care all x

In my opinion, if England did win the EURO 2024, they will satisfy their fans but I think and feel like the want it more. The fans now want their nation to win the 2026 World Cup which I understand but if I was them, I should be appreciated the coach and players that have give it all. The fans may never know when they can see this can. There is nothing wrong of dreaming big but if you set up a small goals, you can reach to the big dream that you were dreaming of. I give a big applause and tip my hat to Southgate for what he did for the English National team. He give everything that he got for the nation and so do the players. He give the nation a hope and dream that they could win a trophy with a bit of luck and not overestimated their opponents. Sure England under Southgate were so close on reaching the final of the World Cup and Winning the EUROS. But that is still something better than nothing. For me, I’m a Mexico fan and as time went on under Tata Martino with Mexico; I began to lose hope and belief for this nation. They seem a shadow of their former self and their rival, USA, got better. Under Diego Cocca, I was concerned for the nation because we just have an Argentinian manager and they gonna replace with another. But I have to wait to see and it was the same. Players unmotivated and not giving their all for the nation is just, not it. When Jaime “Jimmy” Lozano came along for Mexico, I began to hope that Mexico can come back a bit but with a mix of a new and old players and my hope and belief has been restored. The players is giving their all and believes in the manager tactics is just a breath of fresh air. I do hope that Mexico can keep Jimmy Lozano as long as they can because we finally got a manager that does care for the nation and also take some of the blame as well. Sorry for the long rant. It just that I think is fans of any nation; we take it for granted and don’t appreciate of the grow of the nation. A trophy is good but I feel like the nation get full of themselves and don’t improve or find ways to evolve even more so that they don’t fall behind. I’m gonna stop I talk way to long but this was a great video and it really got me to think and see both the inside and outside of the national team in football. Have a great day and bye.

England haven't improved because of Southgate, but rather in spite of him. They have had favourable draws, which if they had appointed another manager, I believe would have done better. I can understand the idea of having someone that steadies the ship, keeps morale high, gets the team united, etc., but I don't believe he is the answer. It's all just too nice. They enjoy themselves and don't have the cutting edge to win, and it all stems from the manager.

This is the problem, for years I've heard endless calls for Southgate to leave, always the remark that there needs to be a new coach, as if it's a guarantee you could appoint just about anyone other than Southgate and they'd be an improvement (as if the last 50 years are anything to go by). Yet not once do I see someone give a clear, credible suggestion of who that would be, who would inarguably give England 'the cutting edge' they are meant to lack. What's the point in replacing Southgate if there's no obvious improvement as a successor? Some may laugh at this but I would not be surprised at all if England go backwards again after he's gone

@@carlosbarton763 for the record I haven't called for Southgates head in the past but am putting a deadline on success now. He'll have been England manager for eight years this year and I agree he has successfully implemented change to the national team as a whole, but this process is reaching it's conclusion now and if success isn't delivered (not even a Nations League), then it's just for the next cycle to be led by someone else. Of course that could lead to England doing worse, but with the players we have, it's not arrogant to suggest we should be dreaming of success. Real Madrid win the league and sack their manager. Regardless, in my eyes, Southgate will be a success regardless, as he's advanced the nation tenfold, but maybe it will be left to another for a title to be delivered.

Southgate has definitely helped to change the mood around the team. However, people often fail to give the context around their tournaments since Southgate took charge. 2018 World Cup, they got to the semi finals, having the easier half of the draw after losing the only big name in the group, Belgium. Then they beat Colombia on penalties and Sweden in the Quarter Finals. In the semi, they took an early lead and then started playing too pragmatically and couldn't get near Croatia after. 2020 Euros, played in 2021, They played 6/7 games at home in a tournament in which they weren't sole hosts. Their Quarter and Semi opponents were Ukraine and Denmark, before a final with a similar pattern. Besides a short spell of pressure after taking the early lead, just as Vs Croatia, they went on the backfoot. One team was trying to win the game before pens and the other was playing for pens. Lesson hadn't been learnt. The 2022 World Cup, they went out Vs the first half decent team they faced. Senegal are good tbf but you get what I mean. At any serious nation, he would have been sacked by now. I call him United the Nation Man. 😂 Good vid as usual though. I like how you set the context before getting to the Southgate years.

If Southgate had been sacked after failing to win the Euros or for finishing 4th in Russia, people would've hounded the FA for being arrogant, particularly in 2018 when most people expected England to be knocked out in the second round. The only time Southgate's job has been under threat was in the summer of 2022, but at that point there wasn't enough time to hire a new manager and get him settled in.

As an American, there’s lots of comparisons you can make with Gareth Southgate at England and our own managerial situation with Gregg Berhalter, (how fitting that the one time the two managers faced each other it ended in a boring 0-0 draw haha). Like Southgate, Berhalter came into the team when they were at an all time low as we had just failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Berhalter deserves a lot of credit for completely redesigning the team and taking them to a whole other level. Under Berhalter the US has won the 2021 Nations League, won the 2021 Gold Cup, qualified for the 2022 World Cup and had a good showing all while surpassed Mexico in almost all aspects. However, just like Southgate, Berhalter has serious limitations. His in-game management is not the best, his squad selection can be questionable, he is clearly punching above his weight tactically and under Berhalter, the US does not have any era-defining victories against an elite team. The dull playing style despite having an extremely talented attacking lineup is also cause for concern. My opinion of Berhalter with the US is the same as my opinion of Southgate with England. I think both of them have achieved a lot and deserve credit, but ultimately, they taken the team as far as they can and should step down.

That's really interesting because I am far more pessimistic about Greggs than I am about Southgate. I think Gareth has continually been successful at getting England to score lots of goals. Whereas Berhalter has continually set up his team to be as boring as possible. I support Gareth getting to Euro 2024 but you should sack Berhalter immediately imo. Edit: Accidentally calling Gregg, 'Greggs' is the most British thing I've ever done 🤣

KO wins for England managers between Ramsay and GS (1974-2016, 42 year period): 6 KO wins for England under Southgate alone: 6 You can remark about easy draws all you like but no doubt Southgate's done something right compared to his predecessors... If England are set up in a way where Bellingham and Kane are given as many chances as possible I think we'll be looking good for the Euros

I'm not from England but I look on the hate Southgate gets with bewilderment. England achieved absolutely nothing since 1996 and that was a semi final. Despite a talented pool of players, Round of 16 exist in 1998, Group Stage in 2000, Quarterfinals in 2002, 2004 and 2006, not even qualifying for 2008, Round of 16 in 2010, Quarterfinals in 2012, Group Stage in 2014 and Round of 16 loss in 2016 against Iceland. For the first time in most people's lifetime is England a powerhouse. Southgate may not be the biggest and flashy name, but he's achieved the most since 1966 of any manager. And the way fans treat him, you'd think he was having the results of the banter 2000's era. That all being said, England have an uber talented squad. Barring unlucky penalties, Southgate has to win this one without excuses. But I'll say this much. If Southgate's success with England was coached by a man called Gerrard or Lampard, there would be far more backing.
