The Southern Crossing (Tararua Forest Park) is a great walk near Wellington New Zealand. It's not for the faint-hearted! Where do you go when you’ve experienced New Zealand’s Great Walks and have grown in experience and fitness and have developed self-sufficiency, survival and navigational skills, and want more?
New Zealand has another hiking tier on offer - Tramping. There’s a plethora of backcountry tracks to explore. New Zealand’s Southern Crossing, in The Tararua Forest Park, north of Wellington (the Nation’s capital) is a classic New Zealand Backcountry Tramp.
Whilst it's not a New Zealand Great Walk e.g. The Tongariro Crossing, The Milford or The Kepler Track it is a great walk - the views are stellar but the accommodation is basic.
