Suriname Dutch sounds much more similar to Afrikaans than almost any other Dutch dialect that I’ve ever heard. I can understand almost all of it.

I'm an Afrikaans speaker and I can understand like 80% of this.

The name Surianto, I guarantee 100% that he's Surinamese Javanese or atleast has Javanese blood Warung also used in Java (with the same meaning) and Desa Karangsari also a normal village name in Java, Desa means village

As a Surinamer Dutch I can understand 100% of it 🤗🤗

It seems to me distinct from Dutch only as regards its somewhat "Afro-accent " however it almost fully conforms to standard Nederlands regarding vocabulary and Grammar.

It also has different expressions and some quite distinct vocabulary. The presence of Surinamese Dutch speakers in the Netherlands influences spoken Dutch in that country. Young people regularly use mattie for friend. Mattie itself comes from Dutch maatje (mate).

I'd like to add something to this, I 've noticed this guy is quite young, either in his 20's or his early 30's. I know this because voice is quite young, but also he has a specific way of saying some of the 'R's'. Listen to how he says 'Grijs' and 'Zwart' at 1:00. The second 'R' in 'zwart' is much close to the American way of 'R' pronunciation, a bit soft. The one in 'Grijs', which has a very strong sound. This soft pronunciation of some 'R's' is a common phenomenon with young people in Suriname, because traditionally Surinamese-Dutch is characterized for having very strong 'R's'. The older generation, people that are in their late 30's, to begin 40's and older, are less common to have the soft 'R'. Surinamese-Dutchists and Surinamese Dutch teachers have noticed this phenomenon and have said that the strong 'R's' are disappearing out of the Surinamese variety of Dutch. American media and the influence of CARICOM countries in Suriname are one of the important reason this is happening. As a Flemish Dutch person i can understand almost everything. The intonation is different ofc. I wouldn’t say it’s a different language but more a dialect

"Zie je later" is *very* similar to English. In fact, in some English dialects, people will say "See ye later" or even "See thee later", which are even more similar. It just shows how closely related Dutch and English are. Also, it's interesting to see how different Suriname Dutch is from that spoken in the Netherlands. I noticed that they use the alveolar tap more than in NL Dutch and that they pronounce S, I, W, and Z differently.

Our 'W' has the same sound you hear when then British say "Why". Our S and Z sound similar sometimes. The 'R' is stronger too.

This man articulates very clearly. In fact he’s easier to understand for me as a Dutch person, than half of our own youth these days who speak street language (which is in fact highly influenced by Surinamese Dutch and Sranantongo amongst others).

Dutch in Indonesia is like Spanish in the Philippines. And Dutch in Suriname is like English in Guyana.

Haha this is Surinamese Dutch spoken by a Dutch Surinamese, he enunciates some letters too well like a Dutch person. Like the "Z" for example, while its pronunciation is correct, a Surinamese would just casually skim through it with the softer sounding "s." You'd only really enunciate it properly when in class and the teacher is grading you for it lol edit - Btw just in case people get the wrong idea in how to use these words, Warung isn't just any small restaurant, it refers to an Indonesian restaurant with ethnical food, regardless of size. Omu refers to the male chinese shopkeeper of the store, not the store itself. And a few of these words just use surinamese or street lingo when the normal dutch word would have been perfectly fine.

Yeah this is surinamese dutch spoken by a surinamese who lived in Nederland. So not really authentic surinaams nederlands. But the annunciation mostly is surinaams, like 70/80%.

Sorry but only 50% of South America hablan español. Brazil, Surinam, Guyana and French Guyana speak portuguese, dutch, english and french. There are 423 million people living in South America. 211 million live in Brazil and 1,5 million in Guyana, Surinam and French Guyana so that is exactly 50%
