Great info on where the horns should be in the mix. One of the first bands I worked with was Big Walter Smith and the Groove Merchants. The sax player taught me the same thing and had me listen to Tower of Power for reference.

Nice to get some confirmation! I think I remember meeting you once in Grand Rapids MN (can't remember the name of the place)...I used to do production and play drums for Lonnie Knight's & Big Shoes back in the late 90's. If I recall, you were there with Big Walter and you were working on a Behringer console. I think that's the first time I have seen one! Pardon me if my memory is way off! But I do recall that it was a great band and I am sure it was really fun to mix them!

That drummer is a monster in this band! Thanks for noticing the kick....I believe I used the EV 868 for this gig since he is such a punchy drummer. I normally use a Shure Beta 52, but the 868 works better for this gig since it's a bit flatter.

Remember building the Allen & Heath GL-2800M prototypes; came in 24, 32, 40 and 48 channel frame size. Their small format monitor mixer was the MixWizard3 12M. It's nice to bust out an analogue board every once in a while. Had a few power issues in my time too. Don't always get to do a site survey, and on a couple of occasion's I've rocked up and had just a single 13A UK outlet made available to me...never fun trying to hunt down power.

Thanks for sharing...back when we were analog, we had a GL2200 24 & 32 in addition to MixWizard 1, 2, & 3. These boards were wonderful and I was truly sad to let them go, but time marches forward and digital simply makes more sense now. Your background has some legitimate cred, so appreciate you watching our videos....and yes, there is a lot we miss about the analog world.

@@thesoundcouple You're welcome. It's great to follow you on your journey. One of the venues I mix at is running a GL-2200-24; they have a rack full of Samson and DBX outboard, which is always fun...and it looks cool with all the LEDs indicating what's going on. They're rolling with the GL as they're a charity and are working on the "if it ain't broke" mantra. I think the time will come when they do go digital, but that's a few years out. Their JTS Microphone system is now getting hard to get spares for, and it's beginning to show it's age; that will probably be up for replacement in the next couple of years. I do miss running an analogue board a little, but something I don't miss is dragging around all the outboard that goes with it. I still carry a couple of racks, but those are for amps, mic's and CD players/recorders.

I saw one of those monitor mixers on fb marketplace was wondering about em’. It sure looks like a workhorse.

They are workhorses! He has had issues with it over the years, but they are very serviceable mixers and nothing that couldn't be fixed.

Nice video! :) I have one question. How do you connect the monitor mixer and the foh mixer together? How do it get the information from the foh mixer? :)

  • @thesoundcouple

    @thesoundcouple

    Жыл бұрын

Great question! The monitor mixer has a "tail" out that we plug into our FOH as the inputs. The monitor mixes themselves are completely independent of the FOH mix, hence why Stacy has to stay by this mixer for the show. If you check out our "We Conquered the Hall" video, kzread.info/dash/bejne/qXmlz5lqktG3fKQ.html we do a quick tour of an IEM system that may better show the "ins" and "out"puts.

Do you mix full-range, or Sub on an Aux? I've found both to have their own advantages. Also - how do you like the Presonus PA? I've never seen one out in the wild.... Love the videos - keep it up! :)

  • @thesoundcouple

We don't use aux fed subs. For a couple of reasons: 1. It add's to the configuration and complexity. 2. I can accomplish the same outcome with a channel HPF. We went from EAW to PresSonus about 6 years ago when we decided to convert to powered speakers. Both the AI cabinets and the CDL's have worked out good for us. Almost every video we post, they are being used, so I think we provide good Information for people to make up their minds. We also have a video that we talk about moving to the CDL series here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m39huappp9jLn7A.html. Thanks for watching!

So, because of that, i want to give u a suggestion about the flow of your video. I think if u make a video include the setup process, from connecting every equipment of sound system, mixing with the band and so on., its will more better.. i hope u can think about that..

Thank you for your feedback. We try to provide different elements of mixing and our sound/lighting system within every video. Totally get what you are asking for, but we are managing a lot of factors at each gig and it's tough to cover every aspect in a single video. A comprehensive instructional video is something that we can consider, but would be difficult in a real gig environment. We can consider it for a topic in our more peaceful shop setting! Thanks!

I don't mix a ton of horns typically, but I find a bit of delay can really fill them out nicely sometimes. I did a 15 minute quick mix of a band with a bunch of horns a while ago, check it out here if you want: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dnx8m8msiLfbY5M.html I'm always looking to up my game when it comes to mixing stuff I'm not as familiar with.

I took a listen and it sounds really good! I haven't thought about adding delay to horns, but something to consider in some scenarios. It made me realize that for a lot of shows, my approach to horn mixing is damage control as the rooms we are in have terrible acoustics or are small, so the horns can already be on top of the mix before anything else stands a chance. It's outdoor gigs like this one where I feel you can actually mix them.

@@thesoundcouple Thanks! yeah, horns in a small room is never fun... It's almost as if they were designed to be heard for miles around without any amplification... :P a bit of delay sent pre fade might thicken them up without making them way too loud though in those situations? worth a shot maybe
