The Sound Couple - Back to the "Bar"sics

Музыка

The Sound Couple speeds off to an indoor bar gig to provide sound and run house lights for one of their best clients!
This is the first time at this venue for the Sound Couple and the band, so we wanted to make a great first impression. The night went without a hitch and as usual, the band did a great job and we worked well together in making this a successful evening!
We brought our PreSonus SL16 console to the gig. We were a bit challenged on how we would run power and Cat 5 to the console, but the tall ladder made it possible for us. For this particular setup, a physical console was a good choice.
The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
PreSonus UC Surface
PreSonus CDL12
PreSonus CDL18s
PreSonus 32R
PreSonus SW5E
PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
PreSonus AVB-D16

    Nice job..... The last time I took my AH mixer to a bar gig, a crowd of women stood behind me and chatted/yacked louder than the band.... couldn't hear a thing from the stage... ended up breaking out the IPad and had to move around the venue to get away from the distraction...lol

    Hi Ron - that's an excellent point and one we brought up in our Mixers Vs. Tablets video and that same thing happened to me our "ain't Vegas" video. I was mixing on my iPad at the venues FOH position. There was a security guard sitting next to me and this guy comes up and talks on and on and loudly to the security guard a foot away from me...I had to get up and move!

    We much prefer a real console, but yes there are times when the tablet is just a necessity. I've found even if the mixer is in a less-than-ideal location, you can do your initial walkthrough of the venue during the first few songs with the tablet to get things close where you can hear better, then you can mix the show from the less-than-ideal position as long as you trust your pre-work and stuff from soundcheck. Understanding that you may be in a bass-trap, or a null, or whatever the case may be. Then again, we do our own sound, same gear, same folks, same band. It's a massive luxury that I have a family that is so engaged and wants to be a part of it that we can do everything ourselves, but I digress.

    Thanks! Yeah, making friends and making it easy on everyone is always a good thing. That's a big reason why we really like bands that work with In-ear systems....Everything is that much easier from start to finish which increases your odds of having a happy customer. Sadly, I haven't done much mixing in S1 lately. Funny with this much power, seldom do we get ask for recordings. Once my hard drive starts getting full, a lot of these get deleted.

    Even when listening on my MacBook I thought that the vocal mix was excellent and I understand where the sound is coming from when you shoot video like you do. Stacy, great job with the lights. We had a situation in Sydney where for reasons I won't bore you with but in a nutshell it had to do with unions, we had to use the in-house lighting at a number of the bigger clubs even though we had a far superior rig sitting in the truck which meant figuring out what the almost always analog setup could do. Stacy did a fantastic job of making that rig work very well for the band. I would say that for my personal taste I didn't like the way the drummer had his kit tuned, especially the snare. It all sounded a bit boxy to me. However, as we all know the musician is always right when it comes to those things. I had guitar players take a full Marshall stack into a bar that held 100 people and wonder why he wasn't in the mix lol.

    You could use dual subwoofers with the second rank placed behind the first one, running in a cardioid mode using delay, so they sum properly out in the house and reduce low end leakage on stage. Then maybe you could use the second CDL too in this venue.

    I too retired a Mackie analog console for the X/M32 ecosystem. We went with the old standard X32 back in 2015 or so as it was the only option, the only thing we regretted was not doing so sooner! You'll also REALLY love never having to deal with an analog snake again once you get a stage box and go Cat-5 AES50. We have recently since moved to a Midas M32R for a smaller footprint, and to just replace the X32, it worked flawlessly for 7 straight years of gigs, and we never had an issue, but we expected we might be on borrowed time there and wanted to replace it before it DID have an issue. And if you're gonna replace, ya may as well upgrade if you can swing the price, eh? We record multi-track live every show to Reaper on a laptop that we also use to run ShowXpress for lights. We also have an X32Rack for backup incase of disaster, and so we can do 2 shows at 2 different places if need be! Which has happened once, we did a gig from 4-8 outside at a winery, then went down the road to the other gig we had setup at the bar and did that from 9-1! Like I said, our only regret from switching to digital is not doing so sooner! I'm sure you'll love yours too.

    @@djjazzyjeff1232 Loving mine. Already knew I wanted the snake so did buy the S16 to go with it and 100 feet of cable. Would have liked to get the Midas 32 ch snake, but that wasn't in the budget, so picked up a Behringer XR18 air for smaller gigs. Super portable. Too bad it does not have AES50 for expansion. Going to order the X live card for multi-track recording. Just an FYI, I've been using QLC+ for lights instead of show express due to cost, licensing, and comparability. It supports Streaming ACN (E1.31) Artnet, and most USB dongles. I don't have to deal with software keys and small limits on universe count. Picked up a E1.31 6 universe bridge for under $200 and have been running it for years. Most small venues, link to it over WiFi. For larger venues with congested WiFi, use ethernet wired to the bridge. Multi universe Artnet or E1.31 interfaces are not that expensive. The software is less plug and play, but more versatile. Show express comes with macros to choose from. QLC+ is more like a blank word document. You get to lay it out from the ground up. Much more versatile. Mostly use it with butttons of color and motion, much like Show Express, and use cues for shows needing triggered events.

    Stumbled upon your channel- I really dig what y'all do. Noticed how you had ran your cat5 to FOH in the air before running any slack. For the next time you do it: It is easier to make your cat5 run on the ground, coil how much slack you need, then use a ladder to hang vs. awkwardly running slack from your hanging point. The big main cover on our FOH console got damaged a few years back. I contacted the company to see if I could get a new one. They eventually came through, but it was a process and took months. What a treat, I just discovered this channel and I didn't realize you guys were MN folks until I saw "Shakopee" on the wall, and then I see RHINO on the kick drum and I'm like hey! I know that band too! I have a question about center-fill speakers, have you ever done more of a "cross-fill" speaker setup for the dance-floor area? We do it sometimes when stage depth is minimal (or non existent) and have had some amazing results and some crap results too. Works best for us if you can put it behind a main PA stack and point it as close to perpendicular to the stage as possible before introducing extra feedback issues, usually winds up being 55°ish. Just curious if you've ever tried that or if you always go with a "traditional" arrangement like this. I'm always looking for fresh ideas to make things better!

  • @thesoundcouple

    We have not done what you describe specifically with the CDL's. With their horizontal coverage, I don't worry about it so much. However, we did do more with speaker angles when we were using 328's as mains (angling them in). With bigger shows, we do provide more center and side support which can be seen in some of our other videos. We have another video coming out soon where we went with a different approach at this club, which worked well. It's all one big experiment!

    @@thesoundcouple Looking forward to the video! I just discovered you guys and binged a bunch of videos. I then searched up the CDLs because they caught my eye, and Yeah that 120° coverage area is CRAZY wide. That really intrigued me because the width of coverage is usually a challenge for us in smaller places, and/or wide stages with less depth: IE, a trailer of some kind. Plus we do gigs of all shapes and sizes like you guys do and want a system versatile enough to do it all. For our main tops, we've been using 2 of the older JBL SRX725s. They're really great and they have a whopping 4inch voice coil, so when you get outdoors and crank them up they throw like there's no tomorrow. But the coverage is only 75° wide, and they're old and pretty beat up having been used now for nearly 10 years, plus I want to get in to the powered world so we can axe the amp rack. Also curious to ask if you've tried a strong/weak side Subwoofer configuration before? Alpha Sound here on KZread has a video about it. Basically you do a LR Main PA like normal, but you put all the subs on one side. Basically a center cluster but offset to the one side. We just did it in a pole building comparable to your "county fair" video and had the best results in that room that we've ever had. Totally evened out the coverage as there were no more hotspots or nulls anymore. The line across the front is our favorite configuration but it's not always practical logistically.

  • @thesoundcouple

    @thesoundcouple

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@djjazzyjeff1232 In a nutshell, we were able to use the full system ground stacked, so we didn't do the center fill, which is really center "support". The powered world has it's pros/cons which are all pretty well known. As much as I can think we miss it, we don't. The weight is more distributed now so there isn't that one thing one person can't lift. Back in the day, the amp racks got pretty heavy. Have no complaints on the coverage of CDL's, but they are not going to throw like a horn load. That said, I think a true line array is where you need to start thinking these days if full coverage is that important. CDL's can do it, but you will not get achieve concert coverage outdoors with four of them...but we don't expect them to and neither do our clients. Never heard of that sub technique - will definitely check out! Thanks!

    Hey, when you guys wanna have a vocal only type system I suggest you put the speakers your using for that next to the main speakers and when doing something like that make sure you take all the vocals out of the speaker your not using for vocals only

    Can't remember the exact time for this gig, but we probably gave ourselves about 2.5 hours. We don't set up lights here so that saves time. Also, this band arrives earlier to gigs so we factor that in as well. So technically, we could have this up in less than an hour, but there are more considerations.

    Quick question. I am considering using a small digital board. When I’m using an iPad wirelessly I noticed the faders will not be in sync on the board as they are on a tablet. I hope this makes sense. How do you handle this?

  • @isettech

    @isettech

    2 жыл бұрын

    Note that most tablet aps have linear faders on the tablet and non linear faders on the console. EG the amount of movement for 6DB is expanded near the 0 gain area, so read the number on the tablet and console. They should match. EG put in 0 or -6 on the tablet and both the console and tablet should match. This can only be fixed by the application developer to add this expanded scale near zero gain to the app.

    Is there a reason why you didn't gaffa tape the two cables down? Just thinking it would have been quicker and easier?

  • @thesoundcouple

    @thesoundcouple

    The primary reason why is so we don't create tripping hazards. There was a lot of foot traffic here and we did not want anyone stumbling over it. We have another video coming up at this same venue where they had us move to a different location which didn't require us to do this.

  • @thesoundcouple

    @thesoundcouple

    2 жыл бұрын

    We do!! Our preference is to go UP! if at all possible. With heavy traffic areas (in this case, main entrance to dance floor) we do everything possible to not create tripping hazards, and that means we will mix FOH on our iPad if we are uncomfortable with the obstacles we will create. Unfortunately, even with our bright colored cable runners, we have witnessed them as a tripping hazard...hard to believe and we shake our heads as how the human race operates, but we do everything possible to avoid calling our insurance company!

    When u said it doesn’t sound as good as you hoped…how much more headroom did you have? Lots of crowd noise I’m guessing

  • @thesoundcouple

    @thesoundcouple

    2 жыл бұрын

    There was a good amount of crowd noise...but the ceiling was concrete which and I think the biggest thing that threw me off. When we arrived, it was pretty busy and it just didn't sound that cavernous until the band started and the dance floor took a set to fill up. Once the dance floor filled up, it got better. I would say we were running the system at about 80% (from our baseline, I know I have pushed them harder). A band with monitors doesn't take as much support is why we error on a center fill more often with an in-ear band.

    How was the sound of the system of the Bar itself. Probably not that good as the sound of your system. And I noticed a thing. Stacy is climbing the ladder in the beginning and in the end. Do you have afraid of hights?

  • @thesoundcouple

    The sound system was ours, but the lights were the clubs. Our system does well in there, but it's kind of boxy sounding room. We have been in there a couple of more times since this video and it's gotten better each time for us. I am not super crazy about heights, but Stacy likes to do the climbing.
