It's like a fictional reality show, just based on a mob boss. Everyone envisions a mob boss being murders and ganglife, but it's probably more like this, and it shows the family life and all the benign everyday things that makes up Tony's life.

I think the only reason the show gets to focus on Tony's home life and other things outside of crime and still really work as full hour episodes, is because he as the main character is the boss or at least in a top position (season 1). Its the lower guys like Christopher that have to constantly be on the hustle in order to have money to kick up the ladder. That's where you get all the crime shit. But The Sopranos isn't loved for its focus on the mob stuff. Its the family and relationship dynamics between each character. Not to mention the awesome witty pieces of dialogue. I mean even here from this episode alone just showed another contrast between the criminals and the FBI and they're shown to really not be that different. I mean they're constantly on the hustle to take down these guys in order to keep their jobs, even to the point of doing these shady as shit like sneaking around and breaking into someone's house to bug it cos they're that desperate. Anyway, not everyone can relate to gang stuff, but everyone can understand issues with your family, struggles with school, marriage, sex life, struggles with addictions etc. That's why its so popular cos the show sells it well in a very convincing way with good writing. It all feels authentic, like sometimes these conversations feel like stuff you hear all the time.

Season 3 might be my favorite. Starts a little weak but gets better and better. It has some of the best episodes of the show later on.

The reason mob movies prior to The Godfather didn't need mafia approval, is because they were usually based on the Irish mob or the "outfits", which were northern Italian mob families, (such as Al Capone who formed the Outfits due to being rejected fron tha Mafia due to being northern) as opposed to the Mafia, which is southern Italian (Sicilian) Around the reformation of the 5 families in the 70s, they changed the rules to allow northern Italians into the Mafia. Thus disbanding the Outfits.
