During their first session together, Tony reveals his depression to Dr. Melfi while also comparing the modern man to the idealized western hero Gary Cooper.

Can you believe that Dr. Melfi is 45 years old in this scene while James (Tony) is only 38? To me, he looks so much older albeit a lot thinner. The last few seasons are heartbreaking to watch because his heavy breathing took on a character all its own; it's no wonder why he died at a relatively young age.

The interesting thing about Tony early on is that he really is quite sympathetic and says some genuinely insightful/philosophical things like he does here. It's genuinely hard to tell if the writers are actually channeling their own opinion through Tony or whether they side with Melfi. THAT narrative ambiguity just doesn't exist on television anymore. Nothing will ever compare to this show.

@@raulbetancourt5795 What I mean is, Tony feels like a real person. In most tv shows, we are told very explicitly by the writers whether we're meant to root for a character or hate them. Nope... it seemed like a gradual change over the seasons, but you can really tell the difference when watching a scene from the 1st season and a scene from the 6th season. His voice was a lot deeper and more natural sounding earlier in the series, but got really "constricted" sounding and nasally in later seasons. Could just be due to James Gandolfini's voice changing due to age. He was 35 when the series started and was 45 or 46 when it ended. Then again it could've just been part of the act.

Ignorance is bliss. Dr. Melfi is a psychiatrist. While psychiatry and psychotherapy has been largely ineffective, clinical psychology such as cognitive behavioural therapy has been very effective in reducing depression and anxiety, shown through empirical data. Also, this entire speech is Tony projecting. He may be right here as you say, but the fact is that he is a self-contradicting hypocrite and a incredibly dysfunctional person. But I do like him nonetheless. He condition is very relatable - 'happy wanderer' and his many other frustrations. Even aspects of his assholic and criminal sides are appealing when they are against on far bigger assholes than him, like Janice.

The first episode was filmed in 1997 and the rest of the show was filmed from 1999 onward. In between, he worked on the voice with a coach.

With Tony it's very difficult, because he does seem conflicted and remorseful about his life, but then we see his constant hypocrisy in what he says vs what he does, and then do increasingly depraved things.

What a consummate Actor....his portrayal of Mob Boss made you sympathize for his character. He will be missed.
He was still in the development stages of his character. .the great Anthony John Soprano
George Costanza and Tony Soprano have a few similar characteristics
I’m in season 6 now (I’ve seen them a bunch of times) and it’s crazy how different his accent is from season 1 to 6.
This pilot episode was filmed in April of 1997. It makes sense now when you see the posters in Meadows Bedroom and alot of the small stuff which is heavily dated around.

@trakomako actually the great Genovese Family Boss, Frank Costello, went to a therapist at one point. And that was decades before this show.
wow i just finished watching the sopranos and he looks much younger here, it is years later though i suppose
Nobody says that, but this scene il linked to Madman, created by Matthew Weiner, who worked for Soprano's screenplay
Damn, cut off at what was probably a really interesting line. "Do you feel depressed?" "Since the ducks left" "The ducks?" What was he going to say next? Reminds me of a part of Catcher in the Rye

HERE COMES THE PROZAC
Look at how Dr. Melfi is checking out the Bulge.
Nope... it seemed like a gradual change over the seasons, but you can really tell the difference when watching a scene from the 1st season and a scene from the 6th season. His voice was a lot deeper and more natural sounding earlier in the series, but got really "constricted" sounding and nasally in later seasons. Could just be due to James Gandolfini's voice changing due to age. He was 35 when the series started and was 45 or 46 when it ended. Then again it could've just been part of the act.
am i the only one who never noticed his voice change that much?
i wanna make a tony soprano receading hairline flip book

actually they should have made the sopranos like coronation street is; pretty much neverending. let it shift between characters and mob bosses, whatever. maybe even follow some characters into other cities. give it a 50 year run. those are the best shows.

Even aspects of his assholic and criminal sides are appealing when they are against on far bigger assholes than him, like Janice.

yep. already left my feelings on this one. never believed in it. In my day people dealt with their own problems. After a massive loss in my family I was constantly encouraged and passed off to see these people. I was in a few sessions cause I had nothing better to do. As I sat there listening to that voice they speak in and the hole they stare through you I wanted to turn the tables. Rent a friend for an hour--what a pathetic way to find peace.
