One thing you missed was the issue of the Carlos kid being taken by the cops for possession along with patsy's kid. Paty's other kid, the lawyer, is engaged to be married with meadow. Patsy may feel T is coming for him (note the tension in the gathering to talk about the wedding in final episode) and clips tony. That also explains how Patsy knew where Tony where - thru meadow and the son. Apart for this bit, fine job!

You guys forgot the two (now very disturbing) things Christopher says. 1.He warns him of his 3 o clock. (His right side, from where the Members Only guy is gonna come out of the bathroom and kill him) 2. Christopher once said in hell you relive your death over and over again. If you notice, as Tony enters the diner, he is looking at himself there. Suggesting he is doing precisely that: reliving his death. Fantastic show full of symbolism and foreshadowing for those who pay attention. Genius writing.

Meadow is Tony's guardian angel. Throughout the series she often "saves" her father and she might be the only one he unconditionally loves. Showing Meadow's bad parking attempt is emphasizing the fact that Tony this time is really on his own, without his guardian angel. If Meadow had entered the dinner in time, she would be sitting on his right side, between the bathroom and thus would be in the direct line of fire, which might have hindered the hit. But so she comes in "too late" to save him.

Tony didn't die, the show itself died. It was a meta metaphor. Why people don't get this simple concept? Cut to black represents the ''film'' is ending. Thats why the last sentence we hear from the song is, ''Don't stop,''. The show itself says to itself, ''Don't stop,'' it also projects the audience's desire for the show to continue. That's it about the end. Whether Tony dies or not is not EVEN IMPORTANT. It is not about Tony. But sure, they implamented those thrilling composition to catch and trick the audience, the jacket guy, going to toilet etc. It is also there.

I'm EXTREMELY surprised you mentioned meadow's parking as merely a suspense builder, and totally missed the major hint hidden within. Meadows fails twice at her attempts at parking. Her third attempt succeeds. This was not just to build tension, this was a hint towards the fact that the previous 2 attempts at Tonys life had failed and the third would succeed. And i know it was touched upon, but it should be highlighted that a major hint was the fact that the most recent attempt on his life, when junior shot him, was in the episode titled "members only." Hence the members only jacket on the man in the diner.

A man looking like Phil, members only jacket guy, as well as another great display of imagery you see Tony pick “Don’t stop believing” right underneath it is for the viewer, “Any way you want it” the audience decided Tony’s fate. The shooter is Eugene's older brother most likely. He has eugene's jacket, also we can recall Eugene's wife actually plotting to kill Tony for not letting Eugene out of the family. Also, on the first episode of the season, while they are labeling several characters and their symbolic representation (ex. Meadow the guardian angel), Eugene is labelled as energy, or that force that makes thing happen (along with bobby, who ironically tells tony about how death feels like, how it is always out there hunting them, and when it happens you dont even hear it), meaning that Tony's death was given as a result of life's energetic response to his actions. It wasnt a theatrical death, nor he was killed by someone important. Because thats what death is. Unknown, pure nothingness. Comes to you like an unrecognizable whisper that you can barely hear

They say "death comes in 3s" well 3 family members came in, Meadow being the last, which brings in death. Also as someone pointed out in a comment above, Eugene's possible older brother wearing his members only jacket would have shot Tony from his 3 O'Clock angle where the bathroom door was.

Because obscenity is perverse and gratuitous. Whereas in the whole vast dome of living nature there reigns an open violence. A kind of prescriptive fury which arms all the creatures to their common doom: as soon as you leave the inanimate kingdom you find the decree of violent death inscribed on the very frontiers of life. You feel it already in the vegetable kingdom: from the great catalpa to the humblest herb, how many plants die and how many are killed; but, from the moment you enter the animal kingdom, this law is suddenly in the most dreadful evidence. A Power, a violence, at once hidden and palpable. . . has in each species appointed a certain number of animals to devour the others. . . And who [in this general carnage] exterminates him who will exterminate all others? Himself. It is man who is charged with the slaughter of man. . . The whole earth, perpetually steeped in blood, is nothing but a vast altar upon which all that is living must be sacrificed without end, without measure, without pause, until the consummation of things, until evil is extinct, until the death of death.

  • @ryangreene2159

Let me clear this up: The violence isn’t real; fake death and fake blood; it’s all simulated whether it appears shocking or not. Profanity is not simulated or fake, it’s real. It’s the same thing with nudity. Young kids may watch the guy hang himself in the clip; they’re not going to wanna hang themselves because of it. But if they hear an f word, they may want to repeat it.

When I watched the ending, I had a strong feeling that it was Tony's demise portrayed in a brilliantly cinematic manner. The the sudden black screen, and the ensuing silence left us with nothing, much like when someone gets shot in the head. There are several subtle hints that point towards this being the true ending: the shot of Paulie alone with the cat, almost as a premonition; the way they shared the onion ring, akin to a symbolic last supper; the mysterious man entering the restaurant, clearly meant to signify something important, as evidenced by his constant glances at Tony; and Anthony's poignant words about cherishing the good moments, almost as a farewell. As a screenwriter myself with years of study, I understand that scenes like this aren't crafted without a purpose. 'The Sopranos' has always been known for its raw and unapologetic realism. If the creators are dropping all these subtle clues, it's because they want us to grasp the true meaning. If it were meant to be a happy ending, we'd see the family happily dining together. But the fact that it ends this way, with Tony's death portrayed in a brilliant, unique, way makes it clear that we are witnessing his demise, just as he does, without the warning of a gunshot, as Silvio once advised.

I don't think the cut to black at the end represents death... In Tony's coma near death experience we see the door to the other side is bright white, and gets whiter the closer to death he gets. I feel like its just us getting cut off from viewing his life. It's going to go on without us. Still you can't say either way what happened. Good evidence he could've died too. Man what a great show and ending!

I believe that interaction with Corrado Jr. actually played more of a part. Rather than the scene just showing us aging is inevitable, I believe the scene showed Tony none of it matters. If we remember back to season one, think of the episode with the soccer coach that was seeing one of the girl players. Tony's therapist asks Tony, whey he believes he is the one that has to do something about it. All throughout the series we see all these characters get so bent out of shape over respect. In Corrado's case he forgot he was ever in a position of power, and when told he was, he barely cared. Yes his mind was deteriorating, but I believe his response showed Tony.... Who cares. It's the answer to his panic attacks and all the years of therapy he could never fully justify. There's even a therapy scene where we actually see Tony start to cry because he can't cope there will never be a definitive point in time where he graduates therapy. He asks something like this - "after all this (referring to the years in therapy) what's left?" The short answer is It's all just a journey (hence the song). I do believe he died in the end, but I do believe he was truly happy for once in the series.

I always imagined an alternate ending in which before it cuts to black it’s Meadow’s reaction, a face of shock/horror and the click of the safety being removed, or Tony looking up and the same click being heard right before the scene ends. In one of his final business deals is talking about a big contact to replace windows on buildings all.over jersey.... in real life it was a window replacement scam that dealt the mafia their biggest blow ever.. ever. The feds got wind of the scam.. flipped 4 guys to wear wires and got warrants for bugs.. in the end almost FIFTY made guys went down.. from 3 different families. Even all 4 capos of one family got busted.. in the end nearly 15 of the guys turned evidence on other crimes.. dozens of people went away for murders and the mob was almost destroyed... all of this over a scam to replace windows.

One clue I never see mentioned is in the very final shot just before the diner scene as Tony rises from his chair to leave Junior for the final time. Junior's dead in all but body, wasting away in an old folks' home, and there's an announcement board on th wall in the corner framed between them. As Tony walks toward the slowly panning-out camera the information revealed upon the board is TODAY IS MONDAY WEATHER COLD SUNNY NEXT MEAL and Tony's head obscures the answer, SUPPER, until just a few frames before the cut. The Last Supper. And then just a few short disorienting edits later we see Tony enter the diner, seemingly seeing himself framed in a shot reminiscent of The Last Supper. In an episode where every frame, almost every pixel has been considered, I don't think that was an accident.

I think the song «dont stop beliving» relates to the fact that Tony thinks about the afterlife. He had a conversation about with Paulie earlier in the finale, and proclaims that he «gets it» after taking Peyote in Las Vegas. So the song and chorus kind of hammers in the point that Tony should not «stop beliving» in that concept. Fits with the episode to if you assume that orange cat is a reincarnation or Christopher.

Tony Soprano IS dead already in this scene. When Tony walks in he is looking at the exact spot he will be sitting at when he is eventually killed. You can see the sadness and disappointment on his face that gives you the clue. Its the same disaapointment face he made throughout the series. A split second later It jumps to him sitting in the same spot without his leather jacket. At first he is in his own paradise happy with his family at a dinner table waiting to see his daughter but instead of seeing Meadow walk through the door he gets a bullet in his head and so his hell will continue. Tony's hell is a moment of a happiness that goes unfulfilled. Knowing he let his family down and that his family witnessed his murder without being able to see Meadow is his hell. David Chase lets us know exactly what happens to Tony when Tony enters the diner. When he's walking in from outside two red lights briefly appear on Tony (one at his temple, one on his chest). There's no source for these red lights and they don't appear again when everyone else walks into the diner. I believe Chase is letting the audience know that not only does Tony die in this diner but he will get one bullet in the temple (with his guardian angel Meadow not there sitting on his right to protect him - that's why her inability to parallel park the car gets so much attention) and one in the chest. As Chase has said, what happens to Tony is all there in the scene.

I think the show's creater actually refernced that in an interview once... there are a lot of things we dont witness or hear the end result of. The characters hear it second hand or they just never find out... I think he said he included this because it was a more accurate depiction of life in general - it is full of ambiguous situations, a lot of which, you never get any clear resolution of.

My theory about the ending is that David Chase simply wanted the viewer to make up their own ending for them personally - he left the creativity and narrative down to us the viewer. There are a number of possibilities about what could of played put next. Ranging from the mundane with life just continuing as normal for Tony and his family with them enjoying a meal - to the dramatic with Tony dying in some way - or anything in-between. That’s the beauty and genius of this ending the viewer ultimately decides.

People who claim the ending is “open to interpretation” simply lack the courage to embrace the implications of the scene. He dies, and his world dies. He is gone, and that window onto his existence is closed. Forever. The whole point of doing it that way is that it denies the viewer the very thing that the viewer expects, which is catharsis drawn from a violent and morally poetic death. You participated in his life for all those years. You are culpable just like him, and just like him, you don’t get to see what happens next.

If you’ve never seen the movie True Romance, you need to see it. It was written by Quentin Tarantino, but directed by Tony Scott. James Gandolfini played Virgil, an Italian gangster/hit man. It was the role I first saw him in and I thought his was the best character in the whole movie. And to this day, it’s still my favorite movie ever. When Tony says, "you and my Dad, you two ran north Jersey", look at his face when Jun responds, "We did...well that's nice". Tony realises it doesn't mean anything. But deep down I think he knows this already. So for me the final scene isn't about whether Tony lives or dies, it's about the anxiety of living knowing death could come for you at anytime. It doesn't matter what you do, how much power you have or try to control things, one day you die. And death is something that Tony is confronted with every day, it plunges him deeper and deeper into an existential crisis as the series progresses. Because fundamentally he understands the human condition. We create our own meaning but the only thing we can be sure of is that we die. Just like the episode. So how do we explain the ending? What does it mean? We can argue whether Tony lives or dies, gets arrested or walks out with his family etc, but the only thing we can be sure of is that the show dies abruptly, and we didn't see it coming.

  • @bigb860

    @bigb860

Very well put. I also look at the moment where Junior says, "Well that's nice", as Tony having an instant revelation. Throughout the series he's always stated there are only two endgames for a guy like him: dead or in the can. But maybe there's a third? Ending up just like his uncle Junior. Tony very well could've lived on to run the NJ Mafia but one day he could end up just like his uncle did --- a sad, delusional, old man that is alone, and the worst part is, nobody cares.

Tony also doesn't remember that moment in the restaurant all those years ago, probably one of the most beautiful moments in the entire show. While this video makes a great point that it highlights his spiritual decline, i really think its also meant to be a subtle hint that the same mental decline Junior experienced is in Tony's cards as well. Either way, the point of the final scene truly should be "enjoy the times you have, because one day death comes for us." In a lot of ways, the members only jacket guy is death itself, stalking tony, always watching, always hovering.

I just finished The Sopranos (16 years late i know)… that end scene! I thought I lost power so rewatched the last scene. Then sat there and realised it - “You probably don’t ever hear it when it happens, right?” I was rooting for a long time (i started to not like him post Ade’s death) but I was still rooting for him. Then with Christopher’s death I hated him. But this scene, with all the anticipation the love for him came back - I still wanted Tony to make it, don’t die - beat the trial. I love the comments on the theories of Meadow being the guardian Angel, the last thing he also sees - his proudest achievement. Also him looking at himself at the beginning, going back to Chris’ “dream/NDE” in the coma - hell is watching you die over and over. Just so many thoughts on the show! So glad I watched.

People can believe what they want, that is the beauty of the ending. But in my opinion and what I believe after multiple rewatches over the past 14 years that all the clues are there. There are tons on subliminals throughout the entire series that was to conclude in Tony's death. Here are some basic ones I picked up on from memory: - 3 attempts on Tony's life - Chris tells him 3 o clock from his hospital bed - Bobby and Tony talk about death on a boat 'You probably never hear it when it happens, right?' This scene gets replayed near the end. - In the diner a Trucker has 3 caps of milk or cream next to his coffee cup - There are 3 cub scouts in the diner booth - Meadow fails to park, it takes her 3 attempts - You're '3 o clock' is your right hand side Now the last details are that each time the diner door bell rings Tony looks up then we get a point of view shot of Tony looking at the door. When AJ comes in Tony is focused on AJ and NOT the Members Only jacket guy. The members only jacket guy looks over at Tony twice while sitting at the bar, he then walks to the bathroom which is to Tony's '3 o clock/right side' and looks behind him while doing so. When the bell rings for the final time we see Tony look up BUT it cuts to black rather than us see a shot from Tony's point of view of Meadow walking in as the Members Only guy shot Tony in the head from his '3 o clock'.........'You probably never hear it when it happens......right? Bullets travel faster than the speed of sound.......Tony is shot dead in front of his family just like Phil was. The perfect opportunity, he is with his family, distracted and last of all 3....o......Clock.... Last of all some people say 'Oh too many witnesses, they wouldn't kill Tony in front of witnesses' Well Gerry from the New York crew got shot to death in a packed restaurant in front of Silvio. Phil was shot in front of his wife and grandkids.....It is a very plausible theory and with the death of James Gandolfini it is all confirmed in my mind that Tony Soprano after all the shit he got away with finally met the reaper. The only theory that make sense to me is this theory. Even if he didn't die he was going to be indicted , too many rats especially now Carlo had flipped because of his son getting pinched with ecstasy. His time was up. The Soprano Jersey crew was decimated. Technology etc he was done regardless.

On another note, the contrast degradation of the seasons is such a brilliant and subtle representation of depression. Life becomes bleak and less colorful. Its so sad for those afflicted but even when its at its worst, its not so bad. Im typing this from behind a gym I sleep at. I havent stopped believing.
