I own 2 Burano's and Robert is right, it's weird. It makes a beautiful image, especially 8K Raw where it really shines. The button layout is great, I like the vari-ND, IBIS and AF options. The SDI outputs and overlays are ridiculous for a camera in 2024. I think the rolling shutter is mostly a non-issue for me, I don't whip pan the camera in my work. If only SONY had a consultant with on-set experience to guide them with the design... it could have been so much better.

Great review, thanks for your honesty and not getting caught up in Sony's reality distortion field and defending all the problems with Burano like some others have. Bummer about the issues with Burano. You can't return the camera even if you wanted to, as the camera is non-returnable in nearly every store I checked. I wanted to love the Burano, and had a pre-order when announced, but when I saw the first batch of footage I cancelled my order. To my eyes the camera is very close to the FX6, and nobody has ever requested 8K footage. It's complete bullis**t that the camera has bad rolling shutter, neutered output options, and awful IR pollution. I've put up with these problems with so many cameras in the past, that I can't imagine dealing with them on a $25K camera. The FX6 continues to be the best value for a "professional looking" camera from Sony.

Really nice to see someone who acknowledges the Burano’s strengths yet isn’t reviewing it like some starry-eyed fanboy. The IR pollution issue to me seems to be a critical flaw, even if it can be filtered with hot mirrors. Part of the beauty of this camera system is the one man owner operator/small crew, who requires superior image quality above and beyond the FX series cameras. But keep in mind, Sony almost always releases a major firmware update after the camera begins selling, so the camera doesn’t really become “as advertised” until about a year later.😂 (Owner of an FS7 and FX6 here 👋)

That said, the FS7 is still a perfectly usable camera for a lot of corporate/broadcast projects. It's more about skills of the operator rather than "magic gear." That said, I usually shoot FX6 with a7S3 as a b-cam and the FS7 ends up being a third angle as I can color match it well enough to the other two cams in S-log3. But honestly, it's very rare that I break out the FS7 these days with an FX6 in-house.

Allowing IR in helps keep “sensitivity”. Manufacturers ride that line. Ideally they’d want no IR blocking so their sensors would perform much better in lower light but they know reality and they’d be called to the mat over it. It would be nice if they all just blocked it and let us remove it when we want. But, these new mirrorless mounts/spacing just don’t allow it much. Anyway, great review dude… Really liked it. Burano is a great camera with some limitations. Man, if it was priced at $15K, they’d sell 4X as many..

That VPG400 certification is only important on long, full bandwidth takes. Heatsoak is where non-certified media comes up short. When they heat up, the data rates drop. VPG400 is a minimum rate requirement. But, if you don’t ever hit the data rate that heatsoak has prevented, you’re golden.

I wish people would just say it more bluntly... That EVF design is absolutely unacceptably bad, it's a £25k camera and the only design they came up with was this awful thing... Sony had a crutch to stand on in the FS7 days but not since then, yet we still just label it as "Not very good" or "pretty silly design" when it's absolutely stupid for a company that could do better, and this extends to the monitor overlays etc. Ultimately the EVF, IR pollution and lack of Open Gate has killed the camera to me even as a rental option, and if this is what is offered at £25k, I have little expectations with the FX9 and FX6 MK II other than very very minor improvements to their poor design in the Mk I. Great video as always, wish people would be less afraid to really say how bad some of Sony's design really is.

Great honest review, I feel about the same way; quirky to a fault, but still does a lot of things really well for small crews/ solo ops. One thing I think worth mentioning is the power draw. In LT, a 98w batt lasts about 1hr 45min depending on other AKS. In AVC it's over 2.5hr! Which is great for doc and solo shooting, something the Venice certainly cannot do. Using a screw on IR filter or mattebox with one is an easy fix, but also kind of defeats the purpose of the built in ND system. Clearly the same design team as the EVF loupe... I think for Version 1.1, it's a rough start, but Sony should be able to fix some of the quality of life things like SDI overlays, more recording modes, higher framerates, and add false color in future firmware updates. I think this time next year it will be the camera we were all actually expecting.

The biggest drawback is the price mainly considering the rolling shutter performance which isn't great. Should be around 15K, it would be a much more interesting camera for most production companies and indie filmmakers. I'm confident that Sony will release a major firmware update to improve some of its limitations as they usually do for the Cinema Line cameras though. For example, the FX3 was massively improved since its launch through firmware updates, it's essentially a new camera nowadays with the added Cine EI mode, 4K DCI, true 24FPS, lens breathing compensation, shutter angle coming in September among others features. Good job on the video.

They really seem to have shot themselves in the foot with this camera. Now that the Burano exists, it likely means there won't be an FX9II, because the Burano basically IS that. But it's almost twice the cost of the FX9. So people who were hoping to upgrade from the FX9 to a true FX9II in the 10-15,000 price range, now have been priced out.

If you need that Sony full frame anamorphic you're going to have to shell out for a Venice. The 1.6x anamorphic stretches out to 2x when using 16:9 sensor, which works well for very sharp anamorphic lenses because it softens the image up. You can use an FX3/A7S III with FX30 so you can digitally zoom in, which you can't do with a Blazar Remus.

It uses (as of right now) X-OCN and the Slog 3 of the other cams. Now what was your cam used on?

Great video - I've been considering the Burano but sounds like typical Sony needing to address some key elements that not ready for prime time. That IR polution issue is really the one that Sony needs to address. Hopefully they reach out to you.

@@robchado Thats good to hear since that's beyond a firmware fix. I 100% agree about that EVF cable too - same complaint with the use of it on the FX9 and FX6. It's a terrible connector! Looking forward to the promised extension cable from Mid49.

The IR on this is a bummer. Been using the FX series and Venice for the longest time but never saw it creep soooo much on these. Great review Robert!

It feels like there are still technical issues to work out to get global shutter working on a Sony cine camera.

If I we're you, I would be returning the camera. The cons mentioned, especially the readout speed and IR pollution are laughable for a $25K camera that was just released in 2024. From everything i've seen and heard its definitely to up to par with other brands, and not even anywhere near up to par with the Venice 1 or 2.

I feel like this should have had a lower resolution sensor, higher frame rates, & a much lower rolling shutter. Would serve just about as well for everything people will actually use it for & be great for wildlife documentary. E Mount glass & fantastic AF.

Thank you for all the quirks observations. Very helpful. And though I’m sure Sony will sell quite a few, it does not feel like a good owner/operator investment because the sensor is behind the higher end market from day one, never mind how the rolling shutter lag will feel in another year or two. I’m curious to see what the Mark II FX9 will bring to the table (hopefully soon) or maybe I will pick up a well maintained Venice 1. That seems like a more sensible move in the near term.

I'm afraid that there likely won't be an FX9 II, and the Burano will end up taking that place. An FX9II would put the Burano sales in jeopardy, and I can't see Sony doing that.

Honestly, a Canon C300 mark i is very close in filmic image. For 1300$… Granted, with the same KZread compression. These flagship Cameras (also many Canons) are way way to expensive for a normal person. Even for a professional. 25k?! Not in a million years.

Given that it's supposed to primarily be a documentary camera... WHY did they remove the ISO/GAIN and White Balance physical swiches? Arrgrg! Yes i know they are on the monitor buttons, but when it's shoulder mounted with an EVF, single-operators will reach up to flick those switches between WB and ISO presets.

Great honest review. It's interesting to see the some of the odd choices sony made with design and resolutions. I rememberst Kando two years again I talked to the engineers and told them a similar design. I guess a few things were lost in transitional haha. The fact that you said its a better s35 camera cracks me up. But like you said, it all depends how you use the camera. It's how I feel about my mavo. It does what I need it to do. See you at NAB
