The Softest Colored Pencils, Derwent Chromaflow, Prismacolor Premier, Derwent ColourSoft and ? ?
There is no two ways about it, my comparison between the Derwent Chromaflow and the Derwent ColourSoft was okay, but the real comparison everyone wants to see is that of the Derwent Chromaflow, Derwent ColourSoft and Prismacolor. In this review that is exactly what I have done, but I have also added two cheaper colored pencils that I think are quite soft cored from that particular price bracket.
Let me know in the comments what you think of the test completed, what your own experience of these pencils have been and if you think you know an even softer cored pencil let me know in the comments so I can check them out and compare them.

As always guys, thank you so much for your support I can’t tell you how much it means to me. You can of course support the channel by simply watching my videos to the end, reading the viewing the content on The Art Gear Guide and leaving comments along with likes, all for free, you have nothing at all to give and in return I am constantly giving away amazing art sets, free giveaways open to everyone no matter where you live in the world, I pay for postage.
If you would like to support the channel financially, of which all money goes back into buying art supplies to review and improving the production value etc, you can subscribe to my Patreon Channel. For as little as $2 a month you get access to many tutorials, colored pencils, marker, watercolor, pastel, mixed media etc. You can of course subscribe more than $2 a month, as much as $15 per month, but that is up to each individual and I set it at $2 because I wouldn’t everyone to gain access. Ive not added a tutorial in the past few months but I am working on a fantastic Absolute Beginners Guide to colored pencil artists and this has been so widely requested.
Finally, if you would like to follow my day to day personal life and get to know me and my family a bit better, you can click the links below and follow me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, I also have a Threads and TikTok which if you are on those platforms I’d love to see you over there. I am always adding work in progress images of the art projects I’m working on, photos and video clips of my Siberian Husky Koda and occasionally my family.

Thank you for the comparisons. I’m partial to Prismacolor and Chromaflow. These two along with the Lyra Polycolor are my favorites.Really enjoyed the video and appreciate your comments on enjoying the art supplies . Hope you had a wonderful Father’s Day!

thank you for this! I know you real artists need hard pencils- but for us casuals with arthritis, all that coloring is exhausting and not prudent use of not working time. thank you!

Thank you so much for doing these comparisons.. another great watch 😊 I particularly liked your descriptions of using both the Prismacolor and Coloursoft, I totally agree with you on that! As to my personal favourite out of all of these pencils, has to be the Chromaflow ✏️🥰

I have purchased a pin vice so I can use my broken prisma tips. It's not a perfect solution but I don't end up throwing away a bunch of unused tips. If there is one thing I have learned in life, it's that a tool exists for everything you need a tool for. You just have to find it

Very informative. Thank you. In Canada we grew up with Laurentien coloured pencils. However we never referred to coloured pencils as coloured pencils. We called them pencil crayons.

Hullo Harry, excellent review and explanation. I am surprised at my choice of the Derwent Colorsoft sphere as the “best” one of this bunch! It so happens that I don’t own any of them! I have always admired color pencil Artists! Amie Howard Art is an amazing artist who has a wonderful array of pencil art! The patience needed for pencil art is far out there! I have completed only a few artworks in pencil only. I have painted in watercolor then used color pencils for finishing touches. I switch between harder cores and watercolor pencils and Prismacolors. I believe that it just depends on what the subject of the picture has incorporated will determine the pencil used in multi media artworks.

Thanks for the comparison. I think Coloursoft are my favorite pencils so far but I have been wanting to try some other similar price range pencils. I have some Prismas but don’t think I want a larger set of them. Always like your reviews.

What are your thoughts on OMS vs blender markers, like the Derwent Blenders or an alcohol colorless blender marker? Might be an interesting video. I have arthritis and asthma so always looking for a healthier way, as odorless does NOT mean vaporless. So helpful, I love your reviews!

That is an excellent idea for a video, I always try to take into consideration artists with arthritis in their hands or wrists or some other issue that makes drawing painful. But at the end of the day I don’t really know what it’s like. Excellent idea for a video thank you so much. I love when people suggest a video cause I’m finding it difficult to come up with original content.

Prismacolor could be a great pencil, but the production quality is just dreadful. I mean when I pay a ton of money for pencils I want to see prostine barrels, nice paint job, well aligned prints, centered cores... I want them to look beautiful when I first lay eyes on them. I clearly remember when I opened my 150 Prisma set. I almost started crying when I saw the mess inside. I still regret buying them because there are other brands that could do the same, they are much more neat and waaaaay less expensive.

Thank you so much for this comparison. I've tried Chromaflow, Black Edition and Coloursoft and sadly, I didn't find a replacement for Prismacolor. Prismacolor is very expensive in Europe, better to buy Luminance or Polychromos for this price. So I bought a set of 72 Chromaflow pencils, but I'm not satisfied with them, I would use them as they last, but not re-buy. I'm still in search of a perfect replacement. Very curious if Artxx pencils can be similar to the Prismacolor.

I have the polys and love them. I still wanted to try a softer pencil. I find the Prismas (like you) far too expensive here in Europe. 300 Euro for 150 pieces. Insane. (They're not that well made either, to be honest) I was thinking of buying the Chromaflow so am curious why you didn't like them? Maybe you can give me some feedback. 🙂

Excellent shout, I completely forgot all about them and I have a full tin of them within eye shot of testing pencils, I am an idiot. I would put the Derwent Drawing at a 9 in terms of softness. Whereas the Coloursoft feel dry and dusty yet very soft to me, the Derwent Drawing feel glossy and soft. My head is empty at the minute and I am getting so many things mixed up, or wrong, or upside down. The Derwent Drawing absolutely should have been in the list.

I think the Derwent Drawing pencils are the softest, but of course the limited colors limit their usefulness for a lot of people.
