I know Pebbles just kills u pretty much but I like to think of it more as this was a point in their existence where they were just so fed up with slugcats dropping into their chamber that they just started to kill them instantly.

Personal nightcat lore theory: this happens immediately after pebbles gets interrupted and is probably pretty livid, explaining his joke dialogue and the constant rains. He pumps out a bunch of miros vultures and takes out his aggression on the local wildlife for a few cycles. The nightcat just unfortunately exists in this blender. Edit: the will of the people in the replies is to constantly debate the name of the slugcat, so here’s my two cents: It has no canon name. The wiki uses ???. Incidentally the theory above that sparked all this is completely wrong, as a cursory standard playthrough of sofanthiel’s campaign proved to me (as well as the very good point made by tingliest lasagna) Moon has fallen, so sofanthiel is between arti and gourmand, but it’s a super weird kind of in between arti and gourmand because of specifically sky islands, just about everything else in the world could be explained away by [Joke Slugcat Name] violently hallucinating but since sky has undergone an Unfortunate Development the whole thing has no consistent place in the canon.

That comment on it being just the Kaizo Hollow Knight mod is... Very on point. Also fun fact, the reason one of the names of this Slugcat is Inv is because it's short for Inverted. It's because it's colors are the inverted colors of a normal Slugcat

We've got Monk, Survivor, Hunter, etc. What will be the class/title (not name) of THIS slugcat? (Because right now it's just called "???" with "Thanks Andrew." as a description.) To decide, let's look at what it does. It lays a singularity bomb egg each cycle (probably what's causing its absurd metabolism), requires impossible skill to exist, and hears memes taunting it when it dies. (That last one seems non-canon, but that won't stop me! It's clearly explainable by something in-universe. Such as hallucinations, or joke software for some kind of HUD implant. Maybe a mad iterator made video games as an artificial means of satisfying the 5 sins and let this slugcat grow up on them? Or maybe it attuned so hard or so incorrectly that it saw past the 4th wall and went mad? Maybe it attuned on video games, and artificial satisfaction of the 5 sins, instead of rejection or obsession, turned everything sideways?) I'm thinking Gamer. Any better ones?

We know it's not Sofanthiel, because that name is actively rejected in the dating sim, and he apparently isn't the Nightcat because the Nightcat is in the Gourmand's ending. He's an inverted color scheme of Survivor, and in code is referred to as invcat, so The Inverted might be a decent name... But he do be a gamer, though.

This stream getting highlights was more than I dared hope for. Even so, in the course of watching it I hoped that the buff lizard and the realization that the [ending segment] actually helps explain what the Void and Rubicon are would make it in. It's cool though, such lore can't be avoided in future analyses forever.

I don't think I have it in me to complete this myself-but I think it's absolutely legendary that they spent so much time creating an entire campaign with custom regions and an enemy and like all these gimmicks and stuff, made it UNBELIEVABLY hidden, and then when you actually start it's fucking impossible to even get to the first fucking shelter Like, I'm being dead serious, I find it so admirable how hard they committed to the bit even though vanishingly few people will ever see it through. I guess that's kind of how I feel about Rain World in general, it's so cool how hard the developers have always stuck to their guns so it can be this incredibly special thing to a small amount of people instead of a less interesting but shinier object the internet fawns over for a few years and then forgets about when something else shiny comes along. It's a modern classic, in the same kind of way like... some old, dusty masterpiece from 200 years ago is a classic... kind of inaccessible, but unlike the old classic it hasn't become inaccessible because of the passage of time, it's just because it's that weird, but what's great is-as long as it isn't plagiarised to hell-that draw will always be there. it will always be this singular, strange, magical piece of art. Timeless, like... Earthbound, or Silent Hill 2 or Mario 64, where even the technical restraints, the faults and missteps become interesting and add character to the works. oh I forgot this comment was meant to be about the Inv/Sofanthiel campaign lmao. god I fucking love Rain World though. ...Did it again!

Okay hear me out: We thought the canon endings were where Rivulet stays with Moon, Spearmaster stays with Seven Red Suns, Gourmand/Survivor/Monk find the Slugcat Tree, Hunter becomes a Rotten Longlegs and Artificer murders all of the Scav city. However, I'd like to point out that because life is permanent in this world until Ascension, since we never see any two slugcats in the same playthrough (besides Monk reuniting with Survivor) all the slugcats must have Ascended at some point. I would argue that because Saint is reborn into the world after their Ascension, and the first thing Saint sees in their playthrough is the last thing all the other slugcats saw (except Artificer) at the end of their playthroughs, MAYBE Saint is actually the last reincarnation of the previous slugcats whom were also reincarnations of each other. And that's why they are able to truly achieve Max Karma! In Buddhist teachings, a soul is reincarnated as many times as it takes to reach Enlightenment (to reach Inner Peace by shedding all your worldly connections and being worthy of heaven). Now that sounds a lot like Saint, right? Basically I'm saying Ascension is getting fully reincarnated into a new soul, as opposed to death which is just respawning.

I don't think Hunter becoming HLL is strictly canon or non-canon? You can see it in Groumand, but if Hunter ascends, there's no HLL to be found anywhere. The timeline pretty much just adjusts itself to fit whatever you did with Hunter in your own personal playthrough. Either way, I wouldn't expect any of the Downpour Slugcats to meet each other, ascension or not, simply because most of them just leave the playable area when you're done with them. Spearmaster sticks with SRS, which isn't part of any playable area. Artificer stays in the Ancients' City on top of Pebbles, which no other slugcat can reach due to lacking an ID drone. Gourmand outright leaves the Retaining Wall in its campaign, and migrates elsewhere by the time Survivor rolls around. By the time Rivulet's campaign occurs, the Retaining Wall's gate has been closed off yet again, permanently separating it from Survivor and Monk. That being said, Rivulet is probably the only Slugcat who very definitively ascends; IIRC, Moon mentions how long it's been since even the Rivulet was around, once Saint visits her.

It is implied that saint is Slivers' solution to the great problem, as the ascender himself. Much like spearmaster, Saint appears to be a purposed organism, given the power of attunement to allow the rest of this world to ascend
