Tracy strikes me as someone so sweet, pure, and natural, with a beautiful soul that comes out when she sings. I loved her music when we were both young, but I never realized what a stunning beauty she was (and she STILL is)! I guess I was too preoccupied with my own beauty back then, LOL!

There's amazing story about her first big break. It was huge concert at Wembley Stadium in 1988. She got asked to step into time slot for canceled Stevie Wonder. She comes out with just herself and her guitar and started to play. The massive crowd was talking and not really interested in listening. But about 30 seconds into Fast Car the crowd started to quiet down. Slowly everyone got quiet to listen. By time song was done she had captivated entire audience. That's was her big break. She was in right place at right time.

I think Tracy is so naturally beautiful, and that her sweet beautiful soul comes through in her music...!! I was just saying I go back and watch her videos of when she was younger, and MY GOD she was so stunningly beautiful! But I was young and vain and too busy with my own beauty to notice as much then, but man, I am so glad to see it! What you see is what you get-in other words her beauty is soul deep and her beautiful soul is obvious and shines through in her performances and her smile- like the sunlight coming through the window in the morning!

“Open Arms” is a beautiful song that was not popular on radio because it’s so personal. Also, “Baby Can I Hold You Tonight” and “Subcity” are more that were ignored by radio stations but should have been released. Her albums are treasures of music that had messages that those of us who appreciated her music can never forget. I saw her in a concert and felt it a privilege to hear her in person. Luke Combs seems a fan and clearly knows her work. ❤❤

If you haven't heard her music, you are really missing out! Her other duet I love is Tracy with Luciano Pavorotti singing her song" Baby Can I Hold You" as a duet. Tracy might be my age (60, I think she is a year younger) But my goodness, she is still so beautiful! It's hard to describe what this song means to the world of music. It's like Tracy and the song have a whole different life, beyond what it means to the music industry. There's a video (probably multiple) of young Tracy Chapman singing this, with nothing else in the shot, other than a faint light that kept moving from left to right, than back again, across her face. It's an extremely moving experience. Tracy herself walked away from the industry, shortly after the turn of the century. She's been a very private, almost secluded, person since. For this performance, she arrived just minutes before going on stage. She left immediately after the performance.

As someone who was around and lucky enough to see Tracy live in the 80s when she arrived on rhe scene, i find it amusing ghat your perspective ob this song is from the Luke Combs angle. To me, this will always be Tracys song and Combs version is 'just' a cover Also, I dont see this as a song of hooe and agency as you infer. Its a very very sad song abouut hiw difficult it is to break out of established cycles. The protaginist in the song ends up in the same situation that fhey were running from in the first place. Truly depressing.

No harmonies, which is the only thing this performance is lacking. It would have made what is already great even better. I love hearing the crowd react to them realizing that it's Tracey onstage. Also, since first hearing it, love that Luke didn't feel the need to do anything with his cover of the song: he just loved it, so he just sang it. The violin and slide guitar are about all you get, as far as him "country-fying" it, and they sound great, but not a lot of changes. They both sound terrific, and as you watch, Luke is barely containing himself not to freak out that he's getting to sing the song he loved listening to in his dad's truck as a kid with the woman who first wrote and sang it, which is pretty priceless.

I will never understand why reactors watch the remake before the original. The original Tracy Chapman song is beautiful and the video is awesome.

Not taking anything away from Luke, my personal opinion I prefer Tracy singing this solo hands down every time.

The song is very sad. It’s about the often inescapable cycle of poverty. She has to forego her high school degree to take care of her dad. Sit down with the lyrics and you’ll see. She’s also with a deadbeat boyfriend who is just like her dad. At the end, she tells him to take his “ fast car” and drive off.

Only person who messed up was you. They said it wasn't the original and that it was from the Grammy. Pull your head out of your posterior.

I didn't care for Comb's country affections in his vocalizations (sounds put-on), but this is still a great duo. Her voice is silky smooth. Still. But her live versions, including this one, are always better.
