The Smashing Pumpkins third release 1995’s Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness would represent a commercial high for the band, but the tour for the record was an emotional roller coaster. They would run into trouble with drummer Jimmy Chamberlin who was dealing with drug addiction and they would lose touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin to an overdose. The band’s turmoil wasnt just limited to their own bandmates, but also included their fans as well. During a Spring stopover in Dublin, Ireland, one of the concert goers would end up losing their life and to some fans the band have never been the same since.
Prior to the events in Dublin,, the Smashing Pumpkins were known to be a band who was against moshing and other ritualistic rock n’ roll behavior. From 1994 to 1996 there was a fair deal of press coverage on moshing with a big focus being on recent fans deaths and injuries. These events resulted in litigation against venues, promoters, and the artists themselves. In fact, the smashing pumpkins were known to be openly against moshing with Corgan being quoted as saying in the mid 90’s “”It’s time has come and gone. It’s ceased to be a spontaneous act.” A year prior to the Dublin show, Corgan was quoted by MTV as telling an audience in Chicago
I just want to say one thing to you, you young, college lughead-types. I've been watchin' people like you sluggin' around other people for seven years. And you know what? It's the same s***. I wish you'd understand that in an environment like this, and in a setting like this, it's fairly inappropriate and unfair to the rest of the people around you. I, and we, publicly take a stand against moshing!
The band’s show at the Point Theater in Dublin, Ireland took place on May 11, 1996. News reports have varied on the exact crowd size, but it seems to range anywhere from 7,000 to 8,500 fans. The concert promoters claimed the venue was within capacity requirements. There were about 110 security guards working the event for a gig that was general admission affair, meaning no chairs on the main floor.
Even before the band hit the stage, there seemed to be issues during Filter’s opening set. The police in Dublin held an inquiry following the tragic concert and heard testimony from concert goers. One concert named Robert Acton told the inquiry "A number of people were coming in. People were sitting in the balconies and they started moving down. This was when I started to worry. The security men were behind barriers. I was being squashed and crushed.
"A guy fell down. I put out my hand to help him up. The crowd was moving from side to side. I tell. I could see the crowd coming over my head and tramping my head and rib cage. Someone kicked me on the bottom of my nose and I lost consciousness. "Four guys were trying to lift me and get me to the Red Cross. I could not breathe, I'm slightly asthmatic. I asked for an inhaler. They did not have one, but they put me on a nebuliser."
Acton would reveal how he lost consciousness again, was given an injection and placed on a stretcher. After a period of time he returned to the crowd and people were now jumping up and down. He noticed a lot of people were now on the ground and he would find his friends and leave the show. He would visit the doctor the next day and got an x-ray that showed he had broken one of his ribs.
Another attendee for the inquiry would be quoted as saying "there was no room whatsoever for dancing. People were preoccupied with keeping themselves straight, and alive".
Throughout the Smashing Pumpkins set, the crowd was rowdy with Corgan having to stop the show several times. The first stoppage happened three songs into the set. Here’s what Billy Said. Then five songs later, Billy stopped the show again for six minutes to calm down the crowd.Five songs later, Corgan again stops the show with word getting to the band that a young girl was seriously injured. The band would cut their set short, playing an 11 song show that ended with Cherub rock. Here’s Corgan and bassist D’Arcy Wretzky addressing the crowd.
Some posters on the Ireland subreddit would describe the experience of attending the gig with one redditor writing

He did a call and reply in early 90’s to the audience and started saying “I’m a mindless sheep” the audience was repeating his every word, then he stood back and laughed at every one and started berating them. I had never seen a performer make fun fun of his audience and ruin the vibe. College show when they were touring gish

@choco698 Hey, I've actually been thinking about your question for a while. I mostly didn't care for his over-inflated opinion of himself coupled with what I would describe as an elitist, condescending attitude. I always had an inflated opinion of myself, but I also thought everybody else was awesome, too. And so him introducing himself in concert as "the best songwriter in the world"... stuff like that always irritated me. I thought he was good at song-writing, but not that great.

I was there that night... 15 years old... had the time of my life... Had no idea about the tragedy until after. Frightening, looking back. I was moshing, crowd-surfing, lost my shirt, having a mad time. I remember people helping each other up, in good spirits. But the crowd got too much, and after a while, you were basically jumping involuntarily. It was so hot and mental, the best way out was surfing over the top. I remember the pleas to step back, and the crowd tried to comply, but little effect was had. Fact is the venue was certainly sold beyond capacity illegally. When I look back now, I can see how dangerous it was. The last time I surfed over, walking back round, the band were kicking into some heavier tunes and people were still pushing in from the back in a surge, one of the hits, Zero or Bullet. I chose to regroup and look for friends. People were distraught outside. Criminal negligence from shady concert organisers cost a young girl her life.

I was there too, mate. I think, most of the initial damage was done within the first 3 songs. A huge tsunami of people surged so fast so sudden towards the front, where I was. The massive swell toppled over anyone in its way, and I was down on the ground during the opening song, "Where boys fear to Thread". I LOVE that song, and remember being helped up, scrambling for my feet to stand still, whilst picking others up. 'People were distraught Outside'.. that is a brilliant point- and when you think of the time, it feels even more so. No social media, no mobile phones, no way of contacting friends in the mass frenzy of teenage anxiety running and scrambling for eachother outside. Trying to find each other, looking for yer mates, wondering if they were the ones hurt that Billy was talking about. It was insane.

I was at this, as a rabid, frantic 16 year old fan. SP were the world to me, and the out of body experience I had upon entering the Point was fusing with the utter mania erupting around the thousands. It was all going off during Filter's set even. I dont know the full cause of the disaster. Too many people overcrowing inthe main hall, I cannot recall. During the first 3 songs, there was a mass tsunami of bodies rippling and rushing uncontrollably towards the backs of those in the front rows. It caused us all to fall forward atop the nxt person infront. A massive pile of people on the floor and I remember the panic, as I hurryingly scrambled to my feet, whilst all squeezed around me tried to help people up. The show was stopped and restarted many times. After an hour, the band left. We thought it was just the first half of the show done, but they re-emerged onstage a totally different looking band. Billy was utterly distraught announcing the situation, which those in the back of the area didnt fully experience, thus understand. Some people booed, not realising the severity of it. Then D'arcy sternly addressed the audience, and then it was like 'Ok, something is seriously wrong here..." Seeing them so small now up there, so hit and affected so, 'human" in contrast to the Rock Giants from space I hailed them as was a feeling Id not known at the time. We learned the next day that the girl had tragically passed. Horrible feeling, because I remember thinking and talking to my friends, if , that girl was around us, next to us during the first fall. Tings like that played and stayed in the mind at the time.

@@TRKJSR 👍 Cheers, man. It was only my second ever gig in that sense. And it was my first time at a Gig that size. For most people there, it would have maybe been their first big show. At the time, there wasnt as many large gigs regulary going on in Ireland as much as now. This week, Pink, Pearl Jam and Rammstein are here, plus a good few more outdoor gigs. Back then, it wouldnt have been as jam packed as that in such a short space. When a big rock band was in town like that, and with the Pumpkins being utterly Massive at that stage, a lot of people went for the event itself, the absolute buzz. The atmosphere within the place was absolute fever pitch, Volcanic. And initially, it was incredible. I was 16- which was perhaps the average age there. It was beyond exciting. But, during the actual gig itself, overcrowding and tsunamis of people rippling up towards the front , knocked everyone down. Like I also mentioned aswell- outside the place afterwards was insane. No social media, no phones. You had to run, walk everywhere looking for your friends, in the hope that, the person Billy said was hurt back there wasnt too serious, or someone you knew.

I was there, 16 yrs old. Second gig ever..... We were falling like domino's & getting crushed. It was absolutely terrifying. Thank god I had the tenacity to fight my way up & get crowd surfed out....... That poor girl from Cork. It was they played "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" that it went insane. I'm lucky to be alive, I was under bodies multiple times & thought I was done. Rest in peace lassie. Erin and Go Bragh. 🇮🇪🇮🇪

I was there aswell. The place was utter mania the moment Filter hit the stage. I remember being with my friends the next day, and we heard that the girl had sadly passed. It was a very sombre moment. After the tragedy, the next show I went to was Metallica, again back at the Point. Nearly six months to the day of the Pumpkins show. That show was interesting because, if you've seen the "Cunning Stunts" live show that the 'Load" tour is based on, you know about the falling , collapsing rigging and roadies catching fire, with Hetfield nervously brushing sparks off his arm, as the whole place plunges to darkness. It was, all part of the show, the whole audience gets punked! But, since at the initial time, it was a secret, most of the audience in the room that night all thought yet another disaster was unfolding infront of us.

Not much has truly scared me in my life. One thing that has is a massive crowd surging. I was at a concert around 2000 when Eminem was playing. The crowd of 80k people started pushing forward. You just get picked up off of your feet and there is nothing you can do about it. Luckily he stopped the show for like 30 minutes to get the crowd back. Happened in an arena too in 94 when i saw Green Day at the Patriot Center in Fairfax. The entire arena rushed the general admission floor. It was insanely scary.

What i thought was strange though was how the band would stop, tell people to chill and move back (no one did) and then they'd play some super heavy major hit. I don't recall which ones but you can imagine. It just seemed really obviously counter productive and maybe it might have helped to play something slower. Although based on the comments here, it was early on that the damage was done and it was just too crowded.

SP 🤍 I remember my first concert, I was 15 at Terminal 5 in NYC. It was a Dir En Grey (JRock/Metal) concert and holy FUCK. I really thought I could have died that day. The pushing was horrible..I could have lifted my feet and still be suspended in the air, that’s how tight and how smushed everyone was. They came back the next year and had explicit rules and everyone had plenty of room to move around that year. It’s super scary, that’s why I always sit in a seat now. Though for SP Id try the pit these days.

I respect him for this. Yet I'm conflicted because I've been craving moshing; I miss the jumping, fist pumping, the high energy. My first pit was in Baltimore and the venue had rules for the pit and security guards in it to enforce the safety rules and guide people out of it. I had a great experience; fell back on a guy by accident and he helped me up then encouraged me to elbow him. For me it's rage therapy.

This was my era as a teen. I was in many of these types of concerts (not Pumpkin’s) and it got bad. I was 17 and getting crushed at the front gate. Security pulled my friends out, but I stayed. I was so proud since I was a 90 pound 5 ft 2 girl and “stayed strong” and didn’t let go until the end. As an adult, I see how dangerous it was. I also think that these were the root cause of my social anxiety I developed the years after. I feel terrible for Bernadette and her family. She’d be mid life like me by now. So tragic.

I love the idea of moshing and watching it... crowdsurfing and all that. But I can see how it can lead to dangerous situations like being gropped, attacked, or even death in some extreme situations. Wish people that would participate in such things makes sure people have a good time while keeping things safe and help people up if they get potentially hurt.

Blood poorer out of my nose of course, and ironically had to be surfed out to the front gate and got treatment from backstage personnel. I've always stayed clear of mosh pits, but I was on the outskirts of one that broke out and had to reach in and drag some girl out before her legs got crushed. She was thankful, but quickly returned to the pit. I'm afraid I'll never understand the mentality. They did the right thing by stopping the show. Many acts would just play the gig, take the money, and on to the next without a care.

I went to so many shows in the late 90s, early 2000s and have mixed opinions on moshing. Metal crowds, in general (there will always be exceptions) seemed to be the most attentive to ensuring a measure of safety. They helped people (especially girls) get out if a pit formed, they picked people up, i didnt see any punches or kicks either. Nu-metal crowds were different though. I saw a lot of morons trying to prove their toughness, cheap shots, groping of girls, and a lot more intoxicated participation. I saw way more injuries at those shows than at hard rock or metal ones at the same venues as well. I remember a Marilyn Manson show at Roseland where there was a mix of his fans, ones that were into the more industrial rock side and ones that were more into the glam rock side. A bunch of people got hurt at that show, security was dragging away multiple people that were unconscious because the glam goth contingency hadnt come there to mosh and were enveloped by those that had. I had great fun moshing but can also recall getting crushed by the crowd rush at a Halloween Slipknot show in either '99 or '00. There was nowhere to go, it was a struggle to breathe, you're at the mercy of the throng and it took tremendous effort to just to stay aware between the spectacle and the violence. In seeing well over a hundred shows I NEVER saw a band calm the crowd or stop the show to address moshing, fighting, or rushing. Billy and the Pumpkins definitely have my respect for trying to prevent their fans from getting hurt.

Another thing aswell. This was long 'fore social media and mobile phones. Outside the Point the mass of thousands were all frantically trying to find friends that were separated from eachother as the show started. The classic "meeting point' after the gig, where you find yer mates, all good. But here that nite, everyone was scrambling and hurrying back and froth hoping to see friends. Your mind is going " Is he ok? Is she the one Billy is takling about that is in serious trouble?', as we all tried to regroup. I went to the show with a bus full of about 25 people. It took ages to all regroup. No phones to call anyone, no messages to send to find peoples whereabouts, see if they are ok. That is something that people today couldnt imagine. I remember the bus back home- three hour drive- and the mood being full of 'What the Hell just Happened?'
