@@hellogoodbyeforeverThe material isn't actually worth that much. There are A LOT of materials more expensive, rarer, and if greater utility. Precious metals are good examples which have many industrial applications despite being far rarer. And as far as gemstones go, emerald, rubies, and sapphires are more expensive. The main price of diamonds come from size. They aren't something you you can forge so while small diamonds are common, it is rarer to get certain size and purity. That leads to exponentially higher price. Simply put they don't go up linearly with weight.

Jewellery stores have a 500% mark up on all their merchandise so the retail price does not reflect the actual value. Robbers might get 5% of the actual value from a fence. It's not a good career. As for the Saudi Prince heist, I remember when working for a moving company in Brussels, I had the job to transport the luggage for a Saudi Princess from the airport to a hotel. I had to use a 28 cubic metre van, there were so many bags. I carried each one to my van and one bag I'll never forget. It was only the size of a bowling ball bag but it weighed a good 50 kilos. No doubt packed with gold...

You want them to be caught. You really think the banks pay for the shortfall caused by a robbery? The insurance companies pay out. Then increase their premiums across the board, including you. Anything the insurance company doesn't cover, the bank covers by increasing their service fees, interest rates, etc. Even if you don't get hit by that directly, the businesses using them will. And then those businesses will pass those increased costs on to their own customers. In other words, you pay for the robbery. Always.

For reference these thefts where they use a bludgeon to break open glass and steal usually jewelery. Is commonly called "a smash and grab". Usually done in duos or small groups I think is more common in Europe. One dude sits in a motorcycle the other runs in with a helmet/mask on smashes, grabs, and hops on the bike disappearing. The crime the preceded this was the flash rob, it got popular around 2012-2013. A business would have a flood of people enter and they just start taking things without violence (usually) or force. There's just no way to stop two hundred people inside a store the size of Starbucks.

you'd think jewelry stores, especially high end ones would make their display cases using plexiglass or even as simple and cheap as laminated glass to either deter or prevent quick smash and grabs. Either could have turned that first example from a 170 second heist to either a faster heist if the robbers tried to break the glass but their hammer's bounced off or the glass was being held together by the laminate, forcing them to either give up or take the extra time to be forced to go behind the counter to access the doors, increasing the time it takes to complete the heist. I never understand why stores seem to use tempered glass or plate glass which both make smash and grabs possible and easy for the thieves.

the jewelry store with the buzz in procedure, that only really works if it's double door setup.. only having a single door kind of defeats the purpose as then the lead criminal can simply hold the door open for their accomplices or thieves can simply wait and slip in behind a real customer.

I know for a fact that a lot of jewellery store heists after the robbers have gone staff, steel jewelry and hide it. then that is sold on the black market too.

The fact they put in more effort and thought to get this much money than the people who rob you by selling you this junk tells me they deserve the jewelry and money more
