The drummers are marching to their death. In battle the drummers aren't armed, their job was to keep the troops moving forward to the beat of a drum. Shooting them was seen as cowardly. They were usually innocent kids or young men. In this case they all marched to their death in this battle for love, making whomever shot them "the smallest measure of a man that ever lived".

The whole ttpd era gives goosebumps 🙌🏻 the vocals, the performance and of course the poetry💔.... She's insanely talented

It's raw and poetic, nothing more beautiful than this 🤍

The look in Taylor's eyes as she sang the words "The smallest man who ever lived" was a look of pure hatred. I hope Matt isn't holding his breath for forgiveness. Poor Taylor, it takes a LOT of heartbreak from someone to get to that point.

"It wasn't sexy once it wasn't forbidden" - Matt was no longer interested in actually being with Taylor and making an effort once she was single and available. He wanted what he couldn't have. Until he had it. General common sense tells you who the song is about. Listen to the actual words. I don't like or dislike any of her exes, so this is an unbiased opinion.

the marching and drums are amazing and the part when Taylor gets bullets, backup dancers fall in turn, then Taylor is falling and lying on the floor. it's my favourite perfomance cuz of its power and therapeutic effect. this song feels like revange

Please yes, we need more Rock Taylor!! And you could be right… to a certain extent. I’ve realized more as time goes on, that this album is very unique. Because throughout many songs on this album, it seems to have clear vivid undertones and exact details pointing toward totally different people from her past, but kind of all braiding pieces together seamlessly into one cohesive whole (which is what poetry is!). The layers… She is incredible! I read someone’s description of this recently that described it perfectly. It’s kind of like her songs are full of separate details describing different people, with the similarities and undertones interwoven and braided together into one person wearing Matty Healy’s trench coat. 😅👌🤍
