The Smallest 4x12 Ortholinear Mechanical Keyboard? (minipeg48 and kowgary16)

Ғылым және технология

Today we'll be taking a look at the minipeg48 4x12 ortholinear keyboard and kowgary16 4x4 macropad designed by sporwoh and distributed by Chosfox. Unlike most other Choc boards, these use 16x16mm spacing which makes them super small and compact. They're compatible with CFX keycaps and overall I'm pretty impressed with them!

The side-pins also act as strain-relief for the actual contact pins. So it's always a good idea to solder them, even though they don't have any electric function.

9:42 Yes, made a planck once, and I'm glad I did it, instead of buying one, because it doesn't took long for my hand to get cramped while using it. Small keyboard should be split.

I have a choc spaced Corne 36 with the Chocfox CFX keycaps. I quite like them except for the 1.25U which is not curving the right direction for my liking. I do like the idea of these smaller boards, including their Bancouver40. But I need them to be wireless to get the most from their small portable size.

I would love to see the boards form this video in a wireless version.

The more Choc boards I build… the less I wanna use MX lol Hopefully it becomes more mainstream then we’ll see more options for switches!

How’s the keycaps compared to mbk crocs, apart from the size?

  • @alexandrecosta2567

"Normal" keycaps like OEM for cherry MX are very spaced out, and have a pyramid shape that separates them from each other. How hard is it to adapt to a smaller spacing, lower profile keycap, with tighter gaps? Seems like the space-saving thing is just a hassle with diminishing returns.

Boards like this are more so for looks and “flex” factor than ergonomics. You can certainly daily them but comfort will be an issue longer term. That said, adapting isn’t that bad but it is a bit of a struggle at first. After 15-20 minutes of typing you start to learn you don’t need to move as much.

How do you think it'd feel to type long term on it? Too cramped with the 16x16mm? Or feels ok?

If you put home row on the outer edge then I think it would be comfortable. Then the spacing is similar to an 18x18 board if it was a 3x5 layout.

One issue is that it uses old chip ATmega32U4 which has quite limited capacities. Newer keyboard should use newer chips I suppose.

I agree but the one thing about the 32U4 is that it’s very well documented and supported. This leads to both firmware and hardware being easier to setup. Personally for me when I do eventually make a PCB with integrated components, I’ll likely go 32U4 before trying something more modern like an RP2040.

oof... I hate the robins. They ping sooooo badly. I much prefer the heavy pale blues.
