    My wife is a nurse and used to work at a nursing home. Some of the folks there were wards of the state and all they had to wear were just a few old pieces of clothing that looked awful. My wife being the saint she is asked if I would go to goodwill with her and ask if they had any clothes to donate to the folks. "We don't do that here" Is the exact response we got. We drove down the street to St. Vincent De paul and they gave us 2 or 3 huge Garbage bags to fill up for them. Goodwill is worried about Goodwill.

    I used to work at goodwill. The stuff they threw in the trash compactor shocked me. When someone donated and the stuff would be in a bag or box we were told to look through a couple of the stuff on top and if it looked bad throw it all away. We were told to go through it fast. I was being told all the time I looked at the stuff too long. Throw it away. We took big rolling carts full of stuff and threw in the compactor. I love old vintage stuff. Clothes, figurines, kitchen ware etc...I always tried to price it and put out. I had others go behind me and trash it. Frustrated me so bad. Everyone has different tastes. They priced stuff with different color stickers. They rotated colors every week. On sundays we would go in 3 hours before the store opened and pull and throw all the stuff on the shelfs that the color had rotated out. No matter what it was it was put in the compactor. We couldnt reprice at a lower price. I would ask why we couldnt mark down or put on a sale table. No. In the compactor. Employees werent allowed to shop on the days they worked. Even if we had the day off but had to come in for a meeting we werent allowed to come back to shop. They had mentally and physically disabled employees that they supposedly 'job trained'. The whole purpose of Goodwill in the first place. They paid them maybe a dollar an hour. People complain about china and children and others working for low wages. Goodwill is just as bad. Upper management didnt treat the disabled people good either. I spoke many times. Lol I live a couple blocks from goodwill. I go in there about once a month. Never find very much. Prices are ridiculous. $1.25 dollar tree items for $2+. I heard they are getting rid of bags. You have to start bringing your own. When I worked there a guy came in needing an outfit for a job interview. They wouldnt help him. The CEOS and upper management make lots of money. Employees dont. They used to send jewelry out to corporate to be sold online. People liked buying the jewelry in the store. Now they sell new cheap jewelry. They have alot of new things they sell now that is way overpriced. Yes it is greed. I know alot of people have stopped donating good stuff to them. They mostly donate junk they just want to get rid of. Dont cost them to take to the dump. They donate their good stuff to salvation army, benevolent society or a nonprofit thrift store we have here. Just a few things I know from working there. I love watching you. Keep picking. 😊

    You are exactly right regarding Goodwill. The real issue is that the Goodwill is supposed to support those people that cannot afford or have the income to buy from the Walmart and other department stores. You are not able to go into a Goodwill and find clothing and shoes and stuff for your family because of the prices. It is cheaper to go to Walmart and the dollar store to get the same items. the system is broke. I used to donate to Goodwill and I am like you I do not donate to the Goodwill any longer. I donate to an organization that I know is there to serve the people it’s supposed to serve. I am also reseller so I do go to Goodwill, and I very rarely find anything. Me not being able to find items to resell really still is not the big issue. The big issue is the people that need Goodwill are not able to find what they need.

  • @lucyboosmom

    @lucyboosmom

    4 ай бұрын

    No, actually the mission of goodwill is to earn money to support their programs which help low income people in various ways. Selling low cost goods is or was just a byproduct of that. And I've watched many resellers buy something for $1.00 and then turn around and sell it for $60.00, $70.00 or more. I think in some cases it's the pot calling the kettle black.

  • @farrahupson

    @farrahupson

    @@lucyboosmomSO WHAT that a small percentage of items can be resold at a profit (when purchased by a knowledgeable reseller then sold on a worldwide marketplace.) Most of what is donated is worth very little. Goodwill should sell donated items at low prices to get some value from those donations, to benefit the public, and to keep stuff out of landfills. Instead, they mark things up because they either can't stand the thought of resellers making money, or because it's some sort of tax dodge/business scam, or both.

  • @lizlee6290

    @lizlee6290

    4 ай бұрын

    @@lucyboosmom And? Reminder: Goodwill didn't buy the stuff they sell. Most people who resell are doing it to make extra income, certainly not to get rich. Very few resellers do it as a full time job. Reselling is WORK. Sourcing, pricing, photographing, shipping etc. All of that takes time, dedication, and money. Goodwill, and any thrift is NOT just to help low income people the way you claim. It's also to provide affordable items for people who can't afford retail - low income people, in other words. Also thrifty people who can't stand retail prices. Taking away the "good stuff" and selling it online is really not helping. It's more like driving people away. As I said, thrift stores such as Goodwill sell stuff that is DONATED. Last time I checked, donated means FREE. If a reseller buys it and resells it SO WHAT? Everybody is trying to stay afloat in this economy, including resellers. The resentment of resellers, and the way thrifts handle pricing because of it, is ruining things for EVERYONE, including the people they say they are trying to help. But thrifts would rather blame it on the resellers. Note: I am not a reseller, but I follow a couple of resellers and I know some personally. I know how hard they work.

  • @lucyboosmom

    @lucyboosmom

    4 ай бұрын

    @@lizlee6290 First of all, I resell off and on and I know exactly what's involved. And there is a hell of a lot more sellers who sell full time than you think, especially since covid. The fact that the items are donated to goodwill has nothing to do with it. People donate so they can resell them to make more money for their programs or sometimes just to get rid of stuff they don't want to bother with and, once they ARE donated, they are theirs to do with as they see fit. If you have a yard sell you can sell your items at any price you want, and nobody has the right to tell you otherwise. It's the same thing with good will or any other business. I don't know what you're trying to say about resellers since you contradict yourself, but really, I don't care. The bottom line is if you don't like their prices shop elsewhere. We'd all like it if they sold things for practically nothing, but they can do whatever they want, and you can't change that.

    That’s what drives me nuts about Goodwill… since raising their prices they claim that their mission is to train workers. But… they actually got legislation passed that allows them to pay disabled people LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE!!! So, they claim that they overpriced all these items so they can help train disadvantaged workers, when they actually change laws so they can pay these people less than other companies pay these same people. PURE EVIL, in my humble opinion!!! It takes a special kind of mastermind to change your mission (or lean heavily into the mission you’ve always had, but customer’s perception), and then become a sweatshop with purpose, all the while having your name mean the exact opposite of what you’re really doing! Ugh.

    We use to make a trip out of traveling to various goodwills - every community we had an opportunity. That stopped a handful of years ago. Recently, we were about 2 hours away for a regular doctor check up and decided to stop in at a few goodwills.. the only changes we've seen are the prices higher than most of the things I can find on Nordstrom's Rack! And, 75% of the store is now New STOCK not donated. We truly have ZERO interest in every walking inside one again. We are blessed with a few small rural thrift stores that are truly volunteer run and for the benefit of the rural communities. A majority of the items are priced well under $5 - with most at .50cents each. When our son was younger - he is 23 years old, and money was VERY tight (we were covering an older generation's expenses) we could NOT afford goodwill at that point either... they REALLY ARE NOT for those who are financially struggling. So, from our area, goodwill (and I am intentionally using lower caps!) is NOT a community minded organization.

    So unfortunately this change in goodwill is due to resellers. I am from California and the increase in pricing and bad quality started here. I remember resellers going into goodwills and bragging about their finds to employees, they would say things like do you know how much I can sell this for and I love coming to goodwill fast and easy money. Well the managers were listening and one day I went up to a manager and asked her how she was doing and she was telling me about how she went on to KZread and saw people making videos on how much money they make off of thrift stores and what products to look out for that can make money. She also said that when she told the higher ups they said that they are aware of it and in a couple of months they will be installing employees called agents and that their job was to pick out anything that looked like it was worth money and look it up to sell on goodwills website. My friend this is just a response by goodwill, youtube resellers made them aware of how much profit they were leaving on the table. Good intentions or not KZreadrs are a reason why goodwill has changed their model. 5 years ago I was able to make a great side income to take my family on nice vacations and have extra money, but KZreadrs wanting to make money making content took the income away from honest resellers. Take that how you want it is just a partial part of the truth.

    Yes but they have to be able to attract people with the knowledge and experience to identify those items. Younger folks who have been raised in a "throw it away after use culture" will not appreciate or recognize the value of vintage or antique items which have high value. Knowledge is the key. I look at a vintage rotary phone with warm nostalgia while a younger may see it as an oddity nobody could possibly want. I love them and the same goes for old radios. As someone with direct knowledge a lot of these type of items are discarded and sent to the crusher.

    Good morning, Kevin, I agree with you on the Goodwill Issue. It seems like they are not stocking their stores or if they do it's just junk. I believe since they started selling online that they are saving all the "good" stuff for online selling. Our local Goodwill is 45 min away from us and is a disappointment when we visit. Never fear garage season is almost here and that's where the "good" stuff is. Have a happy day to you and your family and kiss all your fur babies from me from the UP of Michigan🐶🐱

    At my local GW I have observed the same higher pricing crap but also A LOT of dishonest employees passing off really valuable items to friends and family. I have witnessed items priced very high to deter anyone from purchasing it until the "intended person" shows up and suddenly at the register it's rung up a whole lot less. I've witnessed mgmt members on a regular basis come out of the backroom with merchandise and hand it directly to a friend/family member. I intercept so much stuff hidden by employees around the store, it's ridiculous!

    It's insane! Generic jeans are 1499-19.99. Used fast fashion dresses are 29.99, more than new. Forget the online sales I think they're just hoping to sell the bails to secondary sources. Kids books that are small and one-two words in fair condition at best are 4.99. Used unmatched bed sheets are 14.99 each. Crazy high. Of course they need to make a profit, pay wages, etc. etc. etc. And, in fairness, office space rent in Phoenix has 5x over past decade. But still no excuse for these prices. And how for the 5th largest metro in US is there only one bins? And it's a lottery system to get in? Their stores are no where as busy as they used to be, even a few years ago.

    In Central PA the stores are hit and miss. Some have empty shelves, some have stopped selling used items and only sell new, some are boutique stores which higher prices and less selection. We've had a few stores close in rural towns - stores that were really needed by those communities - because they didn't turn enough profit. We had a very nice bins store here but it got moved to a far off industrial area and it is filthy now. There are still deals to be had but you have to know your stuff and look very hard. And you have to not get upset by the fact that greed seems to have taken over. It's definitely cheaper to buy new at Walmart for clothes than to buy at Goodwill.

Who donates money to the kettle ringers we do, who donates toys to the toy drives we do, who donates food and can goods to the food drives we do, who donates goods to salvation army we do, us the people do all the giving while they just sit and receive and get all the credit. Shoes have gone from 5.00 a pair to 15.00 to 20.00 a pair and more. Clothes and everything has shot up in price. They keep items they look up and are good money under glass and are way over priced. They also pick items that are collectible and sell them on Ebay. I refuse to go to them anymore. I go to the Goodwill bins and buy items by the pound. There must have been 200 shirts, and every single one was a modern repro or generic brand. Only a few of them had a tag (most were printed on labels), and those tags were worthless Gildan brands. Almost everything else in the store was worthless, overpriced junk. The few things I cared enough to even look at the price left me shaking my head...a few were double what a sane person would pay given the condition (i.e. a used DVD player without remote for 29.99).

I bought your GBA SP as well a day or two later. As far as Goodwill, the one closest to me has just gotten worse in the last 10 months since I moved here. Yesterday I went in to discover they reduced the glass case by more than half and all those items are gone. They also installed one of those dollar store style columns of phone accessories. I rarely go now because it's just not worth my time. There are too many other options in my area to find deals (I live within two hours of Dave and Rod). I first started shopping at Goodwill 40 years ago - it was in a little hole-in-the-wall location, and I bought workshirts for my hubs for 10 cents each. The employee stood and watched us look, and brought out more from the backroom when we were done with what was in the front. Thirty years ago, there were 2 goodwills in different towns the same distance from my house. At one, you could buy gold and silver jewelry if you wanted to stand and untangle it all to get it out, and the books were a quarter. The other had wonderful antiques and all kinds of amazing finds. Clothing was a couple of dollars. I haven't bought anything at either of those for years. I found a couple of small thrift stores that consistently have something sellable and occasionally excellent finds, and patronize them - they are supporting good causes as well, so sometimes I make a little donation (especially if I feel guilty for what they charged me for something). I still stop in good will once or twice a year, but usually leave without anything. Like you, I used to love going to goodwill - at least once a week. I miss it still, it's just sad.

    I own a bible based resale shop in our community where everything is donated. We are all volunteers, even me, when it comes to our time. We give non profits in our community anything they need from our store and monetary help. Our highest priced item is coats for 5.00. We have several resalers who come to our store and being a resaler myself, I understand the need to get things cheap. We keep our prices to where they can make money also. All most everyone who has donated has stated they will not donate to Goodwill due to the prices and no one sees how they help our community. Our nearest one is 20 miles away and there is never anything on their shelves and is so over priced. My son worked at this one as a manager not too long ago. He bought a pair of shoes after work, off the clock, they found out he sold them on ebay and they fired him over it. It was against their policy to resale items the staff bought! Really! Please people give to your local thrift stores. Most of them help your community, not the big boy's pocket.

I look forward to the help setting it up (correctly)! Regarding Goodwill...yes, ours are overpriced. However, they are still very busy. There is one in an area of town that is higher end and has no other thrift stores, so I hit that up when I can. I still find a few things. I have the most success with Value Village (Savers). Not cheap, but you can get coupons and earn discounts when you spend. They don't sell online, either. The thing I like about (our) thrift stores is that you can take your time. When I got to an estate sale, it's like a bunch of vultures, overcrowded, and a bit overwhelming. Either somebody beats me to what I want or the items are overpriced (the first day). Can't wait for yard sale season, but it's snowing here today. It'll be awhile!

Our bins have been closed since the COVID shut down and they don't have the staff to reopen them. That was a place you could still find items at a good price. I have much better luck at the Habitat for Humanities stores.

    It is not just the Goodwill, all the thrift stores have priced themselves out of sales. They don't seem to understand that if you price things to move you make more money.

    I absolutely agree with you! 💯 Goodwill has jacked up prices and it's higher than Dollar Tree. Rediculous. Plus there is one I shop occasionally about an hour away from me and they ruin the purses/backpacks by writing on them with a sharpie!! Reseller or not, nobody wants a price written in sharpie on an item they want to use.

    Our Goodwill disciplines employees for putting stuff on the shelf that is worth more than $25. I told a couple of the employees that Goodwill is responsible for a percentage of their cellphone bill if required to use it for looking stuff up at work.

    Hello Kevin!. Our goodwill has a lot of the same changes you mentioned in the video. We still primarily live off our goodwill for sales, but we are slowly seeing the change for the worse. With yard sale season upon us, we are excited to get out there and make a killing. So is it, I Dream of Jeannie, or I Dream of Genie. Both are really good!

    My Goodwill is always packed. I heard they hired people to work at our store to go through the donations and pick out the "good" stuff and send it to be sold online. The online location for our area is within a mile or 2 of our Goodwill store, we used to be able to buy online and pick-up the items. Now it is shipping only! The shipping costs are really high and I live very close to the warehouse where the online items come from (in my area). With all that being said, I still find good items at a decent price in the store.

    I couldn’t agree more. I used to spend thousands there. Now I buy almost nothing there. I will not pay the same price for used clothes when I can get same thing new or cheaper. But they totally crapped on their re-seller customers…. There’s no artwork anymore. So sad.

    All a corporation has to do in order to file as a 501c3 non profit is to offer a benefit to the area…example would be if I owned a scrap yard but once a month accepted ewaste for free on one morning a month…I’m now considered a nonprofit and receive the tax benefit/exemption status of a nonprofit…so they’re “hiring” people just out of rehab or prison but they fail to mention they only pay them $2-$3/hour instead of minimum wage which is more insulting and drives people back into whatever causes them to get into trouble to begin with

    Agree - their prices are even many times higher than the sale price in the original store sticker, that they forgot to remove. It is just sickening. These donations are free to them, they make enough profit but the GREED in them raises the prices so HIGH that the working poor can no longer even shop in Goodwill or other thrift stores, let alone those who also go there to try and make a living selling items. Also, the workers STEAL the good items in the back, have seen it with our own eyes multiple times. They keep it for their "friends" and give to them under the table.

    There are about 4 thrift stores in my town and all about the same price. I love to go just to see things I didn't know existed as far as hard goods and I look it up and usually end up buying it new somewhere else cheaper or used vintage on eBay because you guys usually test it! I usually do buy clothing at Goodwill though because it's still cheaper for me. I do resell but not much just for the fun of it and mostly what I already have laying around the house.

    I agree with you. Our Goodwill has gone crazy. I find stuff all the time that is from the Dollar Tree marked all the way up to $4.99. We had a bin store next door up until Covid hit and they haven't opened it back up. The prices in the store have gotten outrageous. Once in awhile I find something on 1/2 off color stickers that I can make a profit on. I used to fill up my buggy and now I do good to get 1 or 2 items. I used to go at least once a week but now I go about once a month. There are better deals at our local small thrift store (Unclaimed Relics), our flea market and of course yard sales. I have plans to go this week to a Goodwill that is about 30 minutes from where I live in the next town. I want to see if they are any different.

    I've shopped at thrift stores for personal use items like books, music, or even tools. After shows like pawn stars, storage wars and pickers aired I noticed more people shopping there. Now with internet resalers, and inflation I don't seem to find many good deals anymore, and I see a lot more people shopping there. Another thing pointed out to me was that they have a bottom base price, and yes, I have seen .99c store and dollar tree items there for $3.99. I still stop by after work sometimes to kill time, vs waiting on the road in traffic. I guess some deals can still be found, depending on what you're shopping for.

    I am a Good Will Bins shopper BUT I used to go into our local Good Will Retail store for a calmer more relaxing shopping environment and occasionally I could find items I could resale for a small profit. Since 2024. That Good Will has Jacked up their prices so high its stupid. Items that used to be $2.99 are now $19.99 24.99 & 29.99....for small glassware. These items are donated, free to Good Will. Where has their "Good Will" gone!?! I found my self getting mad then laughing cuz as you said Kevin....it will all end up at my Good Will Bins.

    I spoke to a Goodwill manager recently that said all Goodwills are supposed to be charging the same amount. Also said his store got a complaint about his increased prices and corporate made them reverse it. However a few miles away another Goodwill was charging over triple the amount.

    I do most of my sourcing at thrift stores because I currently don't have my license and finding people to go garage saling can be difficult and while I have found good things at my Goodwill in the past, I have noticed recently that they no longer sell any video games. Even the ones you expect to stay on the shelf forever like sports games are no longer on the sales floor

    Our GW in my area is like shopping retail and we only have one bin location close and it is bad too. Luckily we have a few thrift stores that are ok. Even our yard sales for the most part are over priced. I live in W Ga.

    New to your channel because the topic caught my eye immediately. I am not a reseller. I’m just someone on a strict budget who USED to go to GW and find essentials and decor at wonderful prices. Here in Eastern Washington I see the same group of people every single time I go , practically attacking the employees as they roll out the fresh carts. I no longer donate to GW and have chosen smaller non profit thrifts to donate to. I guess all good things must come to an end… not only for plain old shoppers like me but for resellers as well.

    My local goodwill is actually really good. I can go there a find signed big named picture for $5.99 and resell it for 100. But then again we only have one good where I live for miles and all the elderly people drop their old stuff there. There is 3 local thrift stores near by too.

    I have a couple of non-profit thrift stores in my small town. One sells most items for $1 or less. The other one prints out the Ebay listing (not the sold) and sells it for the asking price with the reasoning being you don't have to pay taxes or shipping.
