The Slingshot Tutorial - A speedsurfing technique
Спорт
When Windsurfing, and especially Speedsurfing, the Slingshot is a technique used to improve the topspeed by hitting a superbroad run bearing away from shore. This tutorial is aimed to help you understand better, how to do a slingshot correctly and by doing so improve your topspeed by 5 knots.

Interesting! Very useful but only for speed-sailors - BUT -- this gives many other sailors a good insight and opportunity to learn about their gear AND their techniques, which can improve windsurfing for all of us!! Thank you!!!
Really nice video Nils. I watched it again as preperation for the wind which is predicted for this weekend. Very informative.
Great video. It took me a little while in the video to understand what a slingshot move actually is to be honest. Probably this was adressed at the more advanced riders who all knew already. If that is not the case it would probably help to explain this in the beginning. But its great to watch those tutorials that give us insights that we would simply not get elsewhere. This is all good for our sport.
Yes Nils verry interesting. Would love to see more speed tutorials
Realy interesting. Speed tutorials are what I need!
Nice, to keep in mind !
More of these advanced techniques please! Very clear instructions especially put into 3 sequences. I will try it out right away once again on the water with right conditions.
Great tutorial! I'm sure that with your tips I Will improve in some knots my top speed when I return to La Rouet. Thanks a lot! 😉
Good tutorial Nils. I like that you split it into clear parts. I also like that you get out of the harness line in the deceleration stage as this is when you are most likely overpowered in those wave conditions...good safety tip to prevent the crash at the end. I have recently discovered the safety and control benefit of getting out of the harness line when hit by a 45mph squall on a 7.8m sail!
Love the tutorial(s)!
Thanks, nice tutorial. Continue doing these!
Nice one Nils!
Nice tutorial - keep them coming 🤙
Good stuff Nils, keep the tutorials coming AND the other vids too 🤙!
Thanks 👍! I'm gonna try out asap! Especially the tip of oversheet the sail!
Super interesting tutorial! Thanks
👏👏thanks for the information!! Have to try it!! 💨🔥🚀💪
Nice one! Excellent explanation. Thanks.
Great content Nils, thank's for sharing your experiences! The more visual the better!
Helpfull tutorial, thnx Nils
Hi Nils, Super tutorial!! Keep up the good work!
Sehr geile Tips, danke!
hi Nils, please more tech tutorials, I love them, thanks
Great video, Nils! I would be also interested in more tuturials! Thanks!
Very informative breakdown of the subtleties of the Slingshot! I've been a couple of times at La Rouet, even met you there once (autumn 2017, too windy/wavy for good speeds). It's a bit intimidating doing them there and the few attempts I did, didn't provide much increase in top speed. With your tips I will try more when I get the chance to go back there again. You got good tutor skills so looking forward to more tech tips if you bother to do so, like waterstarting tiny speedboards (in straps vs normal), stance, harneslines length/position, general trim etc or whatever you consider worth knowing for speedsailing in wild places like Rouet.
Thank you for the great info. I would love a tutorial on board and sail set up. Thanx again :)
Great footage
nice tutorial, definitely keep it up - those tips&tricks are pure gold for us noobs :)
Thanks for the tutorial Nils. I'll certainly try a few different things the next time I'm sending it. I'm still not sure if I can handle your decceleration technique but I'll at least give it a go.
Very good and intresting. I learned a lot that i didnt know nor even considered. Pls keep these tutorials coming. It would be intresting to take us step by step to finetune your bord and sail set up and how it inluences your speed..
Great video Nils. A tutorial on sail settings for speed would be good as speed setting are so different to slalom settings. Keep up the good work 😃🤙
thanks for the tips!
very good! Thank you!
Great job Nils, Thanks!! Would love to see more tutorials about Speed! Maybe about stance, leg positions and harness lines when off the wind (120deg) and aiming for a 250m /500m run? So holding that position thro the gusts and bumps?
Great Nils, this is by far the most valuable video I've seen from you. The trick of deviding the slingshot in 3 sections was a very good idea. For me the 3th part, the deccelaration was new and very educational. I never want to get out of the harness lines, because it is to hard to get back in them, but maybe this is the trick. Slowing down on the same broad course before going upwind. Thanks for this insight! And, yes more tutorials please :)

Musst du auch mal austesten bei Flachwasser iwo auf vollspeed gehen, bockt echt mega!
I ll try it. Thnks.
Yes i would love more tutorials! Maybe on positioning the hardness lines for slalom or speed.

That's a good idea, it actually differs a little bit, also I use different trim of mastfoot position and boom height in speed and slalom

I agree. This would be a very useful tutorial.
Interesting!
Hi Nils, thank you for all effort you put into these video's, really appreciated. Tutorials are always welcome! I often see windsurfers (strand horst in the Netherlands) in strong winds still being able to use big slalom sails. In my experience once hooked in and in the footstraps and fully planing I can handle the sail, however starting from 0 to planing (especially in choppy conditions) feels nearly impossible and I am often pulled off my board (even with quite some downhaul for enough lose leach). Any advice on the first 30 seconds into the run? (Anyone else same experience?)

Yes, me, today on Baltic sea. I was on 8.6 racingblade and out in the gulf it was hard to get going and still keep control. But once in good stance, speeding up and reaching flatter water behind a wave braker it becomes a lot easier.
Thx nice to know
Thanks very helpful Nils ! One question - on a slalomboard we put the leeward rails in to deal with chop and lift the board - how is that on a speedboard ? Studying the variety of clips it looks like speedsurfers keep the board more flat and avoid the lifting of the fin - correct ?
My Name is Nils too !!!
Nice tutorial! What do you use to measure your speed and display it in the video?

Great content. What size sails, boards and fins in different wind strengths...

That's a little difficult to answer as it depends on your weight, height and the conditions, i use 4,7 in 40-60 knots, 5,4 in 30-50 knots, 6,2 in 20-40 knots and 7,0 in 16-30 knots...

Board depends more on if it's flat or not...

Great tutorial Nils ! Can you clarify how to see a gust when its blowing offshore? Is it possible to spot gusts? How?
I'll try in the next occasion with my slalom gear. I am stuck at 28 knots with 7.5m2 and 115l (wind 20 knots) at Lake Garda and I am dreaming of reaching 30 knots max 2s.

keep hitting the water and you will get there mate, I had so many sessions with 28-29 knots on my local lake in my first years of windsurfing and at the time it seemed like I was always just short of the magic 30 ;)
Speedface 😂👍
hi, where do you attach your go pro, thanks

@@WindsurfingNils, hi nils, thanks for THAT INFO, DO YOU USE THE CURVED scotch 3m adhesive pads or some other method of securing the go pro so as to prevent it from coming off. I'm also interested to know what type of instrument that you are using to monitor your speed, is it just an app on your smartphone or a dedicated water speed instrument is it that I see on your upper arm, also I see a lot of rigs now with the harness lines virtually centered on the boom on either side, when I try this, the rig feels unbalanced together with strong front hand pull, so therefore I have to resort back to moving them further to the front of the boom, rigs, sails, boards, I use are fairly modern, any advice. cheers, Anthony
Gibt es auch ein deutsches Wort für Slingshot?
Sling shot??? Nice word, ruime wind zeggen Dutch people simple!!!
I just saw the kite speed surfers,so please stop about talking about slingshots and speed ,pleaaaaassssse stop talking abouuuuuut speed man.....stop!!!!!
Thanks, Nils! Windsurfing is a complex sport, so any information is helpful, even if it is the zillionth tutorial on a subject. I noticed that things you take yourself for granted aren't necessarily common knowledge and you can always learn. I would appreciate any video from you! 👍😁🤙

Thanks mate! Yes, that's so true, when I was starting out it was more of a learning by doing process. I was hesitant to do Tutorials as there are quite a few out there on the basic stuff like planing, jibing, etc... but I think if I focus on the speedstuff there is not much advice out there for now, so could be good.
