I was surprised as I thought the Skyliners were doing a cover of a 1930's classic song, like the Platters and Flamingos had done. Looked it up and found out they wrote this themselves - very impressive.

Doo-wap is the genre that truly broke the racial barrier, never knew if who you were listening to was black or white or whoever. I wished it could have lasted longer than it did but the volume of material that came out of that short era is phenomenal.
I love it when young people listen to and appreciate the wonderful music and talent that I grew up with.
Just an old Irish guy that loves your site. Being from Pittsburgh Pa. And growing up in this era I am very familiar with the fabulous Skyliners. I knew Jimmy Beaumont casually for many years. He passed away a couple of years ago. I saw him perform two years before his death, and his voice was just as strong as in 1959. Love to you for keeping great old music alive!

@@veronicadabney1466 I didn't know that. Thanks for the lesson...
The sound you were referring to is the piano being used to create the double time, it was typical during the 50's and early 60's Janet Vogel had the range to compliment the song as she reaches high "C' at the end. High "C" is equal the note created by the last key on the piano keyboard which 7th octave of the C notes on the piano. Not many women can hit that note and most were professionally trained to do so. The song is a standard recorded in 1959 by the Skyliners as you have heard it. Never gets old!
Try The Platters doing "Smoke Get's In Your Eyes", "Only You", "Twilight Time", "My Prayer" and "Red Sails In The Sunset". Those guys with lead singer Tony Williams were the best of that era.
A hauntingly beautiful song

Released in 1958 - 59. I first heard this song on a cassette tape called Oldies but Goodies. The thing that always struck me is that how these doo-wop singers could hit these high notes so easily. The falsetto under his "you...you...you" finish was sung by the female of the group Janet Vogel. Great songs. They are timeless.

SEEMS LIKE EVERY CAR ALWAYS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM! Must have been lemons, ALL THE SONGS IN THE DO-WOP ERA WERE ABOUT LOVE AS YOU KNOW BY NOW. THESE ARE SONGS YOU NEVER FORGET, AND NEVER FORGET WHO YOU WERE WITH AT THE TIME. Always remember you will always love your girlfriends, all the ones you had, well most of them, love really never fades, and you always hope they had good lives and were happy with their husbands. You will always have pleasant memories of the time you spent with them. growing up with these songs was truly a pleasure. Compare those songs of love to todays. Very nicely expressed! Clean fun and respect for others made people much happier than they are today.
This song is a rarity because it went higher on the R&B chart (#3) than it did on the pop chart despite that the group was white. Great harmony. Lead Jimmy Beaumont died last year (2020) and all of Pittsburgh was saddened by his passing. Pitt remains the national center for group harmony oldies and the Skyliners was their most famous group. Sad to say, Janet Vogel, who hit the extraordinary high note at the end of the song, died by suicide. Pitt tradionally had no tolerance for silly racism and two of that city's most popular groups, the Del-Vikings and the Marcels, were racially integrated, which was something you seldom found at that time except in the Bronx (e.g., Robroys) and Brooklyn (e.g., Crests) boroughs of New York City.
Those high notes at the very end were produced by Janet Vogel, in her full soprano voice!

The song is even more amazing because Jimmy Beaumont, the lead male singer, was only 17 when he and Joe Rock wrote it. Janet Vogel was 15 when she and the guys sang it. The group were friends from the Pittsburgh area. Jimmy lived in McKeesport, PA. All generations and people love this song as soon as they hear it. It was a far better time back then.
You should watch the movie American Graffiti. It is a great movie but also a cavalcade of music of the era, including this. :) It starrs Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul LeMat, DJ Wolfman Jack as himself. You can also spot Harrison Ford in a minor role.

From McKeesport PA. They started out as a street corner do wop group......playing at local high schools and colleges. This was a romantic era where women, unlike today, were placed on a pedestol. Every town back then had groups such as this.....Georgia Goodman and the Headliners, The Jaggers, the Marcels, The Vogues, The Electrons, The Flamingos, .............just a few of the groups that played in and around Pittsburgh. All soul, all do wop.
Janet Vogel provided the coloratura soprano vocal at the end.
