I met Patrick Moore in 1997 at Ford Station in Sussex. His car was with a mechanic and he was catching a train to London for filming of The Sky At Night. I was on my way to school and spotted him sitting in the first class carriage. I couldn't believe my eyes made a beeline straight for him. We chatted all the way to my train stop and amazingly, he showed me the photos from the first Mars rover landing - I was the second person to see the photos in the UK. Patrick gave me his business card, which mum still has and told me to call him and that we should arrange for me to visit. I was very young at the time and mum wasn't comfortable with me visiting on my own, we visited Patrick together. We had an amazing time chatting and looking at the stars. He was a true gentleman and so very kind to mum and I when we didn't have a lot. Thanks for the memories, Patrick. They will last a lifetime.

Wow what an experience!!! I was lucky enough to receive a talk from him when he did an evening 'get together' in Cornwall. Shook his hand and chatted to him.

What a wonderful experience . Patrick is a legend. I’ll bet when you hear the theme from The Sky at Night your heart fills with joy and memories. Bringing a tear to the eye too! It does mine. I’m 75 now and it brings my dad to mind watching his programme together when I was young! So many memories and you have one to treasure with your mom! A unique experience for you. Patrick was a true gentleman with great modesty too! Great presenter with expertise completely without the dreaded ego and a great and entertaining eccentric character! Treasure that experience! 👏🌙✨⭐️

I lived down the coast, when I grew up I learned he would reply to letters and invite people round his home. I was gutted I never asked my mum or tried writing!

Thank you Patrick, you are the reason I look to the night sky! I miss you very much!

Nearly 9 years on and I still tear up at his final "Goodnight". I'm out in the desert next weekend: I'll be taking my scope.

Sir Patrick Moore is the most legendary British astronomer of our time! Nobody will ever replace him in our lifetime! He taught so many peaple astronomy and even professional astronomers! He is such an icon in Britain and nobody could do the sky at night better than sir Patrick!!! I met him in 1993 in Edinburgh and it was the most exciting time in my interest in astronomy! He learned me that you do not need to go to university for degree to be an astronomer! R.I.P Sir Patrick. You will never be forgotten!

Lizzie Wadsworth As a child in the 60's, Patrick Moore had a huge influence in my interest in our milkyway and the universe. I remember especially his enthusiasm and excitement during the Apollo programme. I think we all shared that with him. He was every household's astronomer in the UK.

He was a good man, and an inspiration to many, but he could be very brusque at times. In the mid-1970's, long before receiving his knighthood Patrick Moore flat out refused to open the Planetarium at Plymouth Polytechnic (now the University). It was the best planetarium in the West of England, with superb Zeiss optics. It was a part of the Polytechnic Naval College, and was cared for by Captain Day, who was the man behind the project. He told us that he was treated quite off-handedly by Patrick. Peter Knight, a Polytechnic Physics lecturer also asked if Mr. Moore if he would like to perform the ceremony, and offered to have all of his expenses paid. Again Patrick bluntly refused the offer. That attitude tarnished Mr. Moore's reputation for quite a number of students at the time. If Mr. Moore had attended the event, it would have meant quite a lot to many people in the Plymouth area, and the Planetarium would have been given Patrick Moore's name. The Planetarium is named after Captain Day instead.

He is the reason I look up at night. He's the only famous person that I shed a tear for, when he passed. Thanks for my 40odd years of wonder Sir.

I remember, even in mid 80's in a bedsit on a small b&w portable, that each and every of Sir Patrick's episodes were a joy to behold and a loving gift ❤😊

Just watched this on youtube and often used to watch this series when it was on once a month. I had my headphones on while I was watching it and looked up to see on BBC 1 RuPaul's Drag Race Uk. What the hell is going on? The sky at night had already been relegated to BBC 4. I don't think I'll be paying my licence fee for much longer!

When I head about his death I was gutted like everyone else. I've watched for years since the late 80s all the way to present. I love the man and his great passion for the stars. On hearing his death I went to my local museum Space Center for the day to record a tribute to him. Them videos are on my KZread going back to 2012. I do enjoy the new Sky at Night. We have to be thankful that we still have it without Sir Patrick at the helm. I'm sure hes looking down glad that it's still on the BBC all this time. RIP Sir Patrick Moore. Gone but never ever forgotten. ❤

That was Sir Patrick. He was someone who would help others start up in Astronomy and was truly selfless. He was a British institution and still should be.

I read his book in 1960 - "Your Book of Astronomy" and was hooked.. still ding it 57 years later.. I corresponded with him since that time. A great person and sorely missed..

This was a great episode, and nice to focus on amatours rather than deep science every now and then. Also Pete comes across as a great presenter, definitely an underused asset in the show currently in my opinion.

Always amazed how much Patrick Moore contributed to astronomy with his passion and in the 60s, 70s 80s and 90s. Such a generous man with his time. Heard of people who were interested in astronomy and would chap his door. Only to be greeted by Patrick or his house keeper and would be invited in for a chat and cup of tea. Or being asked to open an observatory or give a talk only to say yes. Sadly missed but I am sure he will have a better view of the heavens where he is now.

Will never be forgotten, I'll always be grateful for him for peaking my interest in the stars and space and also some bloody good game tips, GamesMaster. RIP Patrick.

My hero hence why my love of the stars and astronomy . We holidayed in Selsey many times when I was a child and I remember my late father telling me "Thats Patrick Moores house!" I was intrigued as I was given a small telescope one christmas by my parents. One day he was coming out as we were walking past and he said hello, of course I was awestruck and fired off lots of questions about the stars. He stood and talked to us for about 20 minutes I suppose. Then excused himself and left. A dear man and a GENIUS astronomer. It was an honour to meet you RIP Sir Patrick. 😭🌙🌎

I remember as a teen first seeing an episode on quite late at night, must of been about 1990 or late 80s and being fascinated by the pictures of the planets and other astronomical content. Sir Patrick seemed like an interesting character and to a layman non scientist like me explained things really well!

Still reading his two books its Patrick Moore's Year Book Astronomy 2014 , and Practical Amateur Astronomy revised edition 1970, A very interesting books to read. Some of the sections made me cry especially the personal messages of the people that he knew and he worked with over the years , also the people who truly inspired by him. Like Musician/ Professor Brian May said, he said he is irreplaceable, There will never be another Patrick Moore. But we were lucky enough to get one.

Genius, so understated, yet insightful and brought an otherwise seemingly closed world to idiots like me. We will never see his like. RISpace Sir x

For me the most outstanding thing Mr. Patrick Moore ever did was go pose a question to the first men who went to the moon and a press conference. He asked how much brighter were the stars when viewed from space or the moon,. The answer was something nobody exspected from them aand clearly upset thing very much. For some reason they all stopped aand looked at one another as if to say "Who is going to tell the lie first" because all three said they could not remember weather they saw stars or not, one sid they did not see stars so in the end all three had effectivly denied seeing the stars. It is now 2020 and we know that just from the huble alone swe have had some stunning pictures. We have also seen video footage taken from the space station showing the stars , and the Canadian guy actualy said that they can now navigate by the stars

I think he is a bit. His programmes are big on visuals, but informative content is a bit thin on the ground. I personally think Jim Al-Khalili and Maggie Aderin-Pocock are far superior science presenters.

Patrick, the man who got me really in the sky - with my scopes - from large field glasses to a 5 inch newton to a an 8 inch celestron, with which I even took photo's. This was and is real, not the CGI's of today. Of course we are amateurs and now the sky is so stuffed up with man-made light that children cannot see the Milky way, which was visible to the naked eye in my childhood. Love you all.
