I have the full Barnes 4wd skids on my JKU Rubicon. They are super heavy duty and definitely have paid for themselves in saving me damage from rocks in Moab and Southern California.

I started looking at throwing umhw sheet to my skids. Really improved it sliding over obstacles. Plus side I keep my paint on better. Living in the rust belt bear metal = bad

i second the suggestion that skid plate upgrades should be among the first upgrades for off road. that barnes engine skid looks to be a far better fit than the competing skids. i struggled with the one i put on mine. had to grind for clearance and the fit just didnt seem right.

Full skids are one of the first things I installed and I’ve beat the piss out of them, thrown them in the shop press and bent them back and ran them again. Money well spent.

You should really scuff metal up before painting to make the finish last. I use 380 grit on a wall plug orbital sander, takes 5 minutes and and the tool only costs about $30 but it increases the resistance to peeling by a lot

When I did my rear main seal b4 I put my pan back on I I plates it completely in 1/4 plate the sude pieces I drilled some holes in . I like the idea of the skid but between my belly pan for my 4 link it just becomes a ton of shit in the way when repairs are needed.

@@yerwrng No, the whole point of it, is so it acts as a slider/skid plate. Just because the oil or transmission pan is armored. the bell housing can still get caught on something.

@@minegun3 Do you know how many times I've actually hit those two areas ?... Never... Your vulnerability will depend on how your rig is set up . If you have short arms then you are open for damage If you have a front and rear cross members with long arms then the lower control arms usually act as sliders for boulders in that area and stop you long before you get into the items you mentioned. The most vulnerable point is the middle area between the long arm cross members this is where a rock could easily hit bit most folks like myself have a belly skid between them .
