The Single Best Way to Start a Conversation with Any Prospect

Be sure to register for my free training on, "The 5-Step Formula to Closing More Deals without the Price Pushback, 'Think-It-Overs' or Ghosting" salesinsightslab.com/training/
Most salespeople start their conversations with prospects by pitching. These salespeople describe the benefits of their products or services, and tout the amazing features of their companies.
This is totally wrong. When you begin a sales conversation in this way, you’re totally focused on yourself and your own company. But prospects don’t care about you! They only care about themselves.
Stop pitching, and start using an approach that will set you apart from the competition and get the prospect to perceive you as an expert.
In this video, I’m going to share the single best way to start a conversation with any prospect.

This is gold. Thanks for sharing. As someone who’s done a lot of reading to understand sales I can say that this idea of the “Challenger sale“ or person who is educating the customer is a sound philosophy. Thanks again for making this video it was a critical reminder I needed to implement this technique

I use this all the time with existing customers, I still have trouble closing, I don't feel comfortable pressuring people but when I try to upsell as a door to door guy to add more services I often get offered inside. I can start the conversation and make a prospect feel valued this way.

I like how you use the term challenge instead of issues or problems. Challenge is far more positive and not stressful when repeatedly used, unlike the other 2.

    1. Show you know what's going on in the marketplace. "Right now I see this happening in your sector." 2. List 3 common challenges going on in the marketplace that you solve. "A lot companies are losing to low cost competitors, can't find prospects, can't run good sales meetings." 3. Do any of those issues ring true to you?

Your vibe and simple, straight-forward approach really let your message land home. It did, however, feel like this particular expression of it seemed like it was primarily geared toward people who are selling high-end products in a business meeting, or in a context where the appropriateness is assumed. I feel like the problem I'm running into is a little and different and I'd love to get some feed back. I'm an artist and over the last 6-8 months, I got photoshop to design clothing and apparel. Now, I've got several full lines of clothes, a functional website and no money to pay for facebook ads, or instagram affiliates (at this stage, that was expected). My present plan is to go to facebook groups, join any conversation that looks interesting, try to be friendly and then approach the people through Messanger with a statement about how I enjoyed the conversation and then share my store. I would be greatly appreciative of any insight you may have about how to go about this in an organic way that's as respectful of the communities as possible... and will turn into sales. I love what I'm making, but have never experienced myself as a natural sales person... I'm awkward around the whole process...

i am a b2b process trainer, swati when i was a telemarketer i interacted with these objections number of times. the only way to handle this objection is to put the ball in the prospects court. What I mean is at the beginning avoid the starting of your call where you sounded confused or nervous, this is something which you dont notice but the prospect does and you miss nailing the target. Be focussed, motivated and calm. Best of luck.

My master taught me a different approach, and he knows what he is talking about. I sell a service over the phone, where 95% of our clients are B2B. Our approach to start a conversation is to sell it. Sell it on smiles, laugh and charm. After I introduce myself amd my company (which is totally irrelevant), I crack a joke that our company name sets up, if they laugh or react to you positively you can move forward. After that you get them talking sbout them and their company. You ask what they do, and no matter what it is, you act as if it is the biggest surprise in the world. Even if it’s a guy selling hotdogs on the street, you act as if it is the hardest job in the world and applaud them for doing such a complicated job. This will boost their self-image, and will make you an important factor in their own opinion of themselves. Then guide the conversation with questions where the only logical answer is: yes. These bits of information and questions will only be interrupted by chit-chatting, slowly programming them into saying yes amd change their view on you from salesman to a good buddy. After an averagely 20 minute long conversation you’ll reach the close, now you are no longer a salesman pitching a product, but their buddy suggesting a great idea. Close with a contract, while on the phone and voila, move unto the next prospect.
