    @@bahshasNo, it's not. Senior designer is an actual title-something HR would use. Lead designer is a functional title in context to a project, account, campaign, etc. Being a lead designer doesn't mean you're a senior designer. But being a senior designer, you're (hopefully) more often than not going to be a lead designer for something.

    you can replicate the effect from the simpsons game from ps3, by making a clone of the original model, and reverse the normals, and make it slightly bigger, then inside the code, enable POLYGON CULLING, and add a black texture to the reversed model, and then you'll have the outlines, and as for the shading it's called cellsahding, considering it's an old opengl (or similar 3d engine) I don't think there are shaders that could handle something like that shading.

  • @WackoMcGoose

    @WackoMcGoose

    9 ай бұрын

    Ah yes, the Okami Method of outline making. Done well, it's a hell of an effect and requires no complex shader reprogramming, but you have to be very careful when making the "inverse hull" model. Can't just slap a decimal scale modifier on and call it a day, concave parts will no longer line up properly until you make manual adjustments...

  • @TakumiJoyconBoyz

    @TakumiJoyconBoyz

    If they look into how Wind Waker did cel shading they should be able to replicate it. It's basically a simple line of code that defines a cutoff point in the soft shadow calculation and then tells it to fill in that area with a flat amount of shading.

    I think the cel-shading as you have it applied now has its pros and cons. I think the outlines are definitely the big thing missing - especially considering all the NPCs' noses essentially disappear if you look at them straight on with that cel shading. I think if you could get the outlines working or find some other creative solution, the cel shading would be great!

    While EA probably owns the game code & assets, artwork .etc - they have zero control whatsoever over the Simpsons IP. It's one of the reasons game preservation is so difficult - plenty of games as products contain other creative works & intellectual property subject to extremely limited & defined commercial licencing agreements. Why do you think it took forever to get any kind of Goldeneye 64 re-release despite decades of clamour for it - while Perfect Dark got a HD remaster within its first decade.

    @@MetalPopka Obviously fingers crossed, Disney isn't known for avoiding filing frivolous lawsuits, but since this mod would potentially be mostly a texture pack requiring a full copy of the game to play it, we should be fine. The cel shading is absolutely the way to go for the main characters. If you want to add it for the NPC’s too, it might be useful to watch one of the several excellent videos on how Zelda Wind Waker’s lightning works. Basically it uses normal shading but then determines the highest and lowest brightness areas and instead of a gradient between them makes a hard line that divides them. If this would end up requiring some extra programming, it might be worth it to try to consult some other 6th gen console modders?

    I agree with you. Although I can understand his dilemma too. Shadows were introduced in the Simpsons movie and the show implemented it since. No shadow simpsons are the original while the ones with shadowed textures are the new upgraded designs. So the dilemma is: should the game have old simpsons episodes feeling to it or the new simpsons episodes feeling

    The shadows on the cel shading is actually really easy to do, at least in Blender. You basically have the regular lighting output get plugged into something like a color ramp set to linear, and then adjust the handles to control the amount of shading. Anything above a certain brightness will be the light color, and anything below a certain brightness is the darker color. It gives you the really nice clean lines between the colors like a real cel would have. For the outlines, maybe look into something called the "inverted hull" method.

    It's amazing what you're doing. I personally prefer your take of bringing it closer to the TV/Movie animation both for cutscenes and in-game models, so I much prefer the cel-shaded look and the simpler and cleaner grass texture. But I guess it's either impossible or very difficult to implement the black outlines. I can't imagine how they did it in, say, Dragon Quest VIII, it seemed like sorcery to me back when it was released on PS2 and still does to this day.

    there’s a way to do outlines on the actual model that’s convincing; you can just make a shell model that sits over the actual model itself, same basic model as the character as a whole etc but slightly thicker/fatter all around - that model is totally black on the inside, and then transparent on the outside; this way, the outline is created from the angle of being able to see through the model on the outside and see the inside outlining the character. there’s scripts to do this in programs like blender to automate it

    The technique to create the outline effect on the Playstation 2 version models is called Inverse Hull Method, as a matter of fact it is a quite trivial effect to pull off. It is possible to implement it to the citizen characters but you would need access to the game source code and a programmer familiar with whatever the language is used to write the game.

    For someone who’s reanimating the cutscenes by himself (of course with the friends assistance), the intro still looks decent! My favourite thing in this game would have to be the various lines everyone has to say whilst driving and my least favourite being how you can’t go 50 metres away from the golden house without blowing up the Rocket Car… Happy 20th anniversary Simpsons: Hit & Run 🚸
