By the way, when Númenóreans, led by the king Ar-Pharazôn, went against the Ban of Valar and landed on the shore of Aman, they were actually strong enough to take on the Valar, maybe even Manwë. Remember that even Sauron himself surrendered to Númenórean army simply because he knew that he was no match for their might. So it was not the Valar which brought The Downfall of Númenor, but Ilúvatar, who at the call of Manwë buried the king Ar-Pharazôn and his Númenórean army, trapping them inside the Caves of the Forgotten until the last battle, Dagor Dagorath. If it wasn't for Ilúvatar's intervention, who knows? Only justice from that incident(?) was that Sauron, who tricked Númenóreans and brought about their downfall, sank with the Island of Númenór, thereby robbing him of his ability to assume fair and charming forms forever, seriously handicapping his ability of poisoning the minds of others from that point on . Serves him right, that creep.

The most evil characters literally cannot understand the Good in Tolkien's world. Sauron could understand Saruman, but thought Gandalf was foolish for not trying to take the Ring himself. Morgoth was secure in the knowledge that the Elves and Edain could not win their war against him, because the Valar would not take their part; he could not foresee how a half-elf bearing a Silmaril back to Valinor as the representative of Elves and Men could plead for their aid and doom him. And Sauron could not conceive of the Valar yielding their power to the One for any reason. Which is why the Rings of Power story of the barely-named southlands 'map', and Sauron's contingency plan for regrouping there, "A plan to be enacted in the event of Morgoth's defeat..." ('enacted' is one of the words the writers do not use correctly), is laughable to say the least. Morgoth was Sauron's god. He literally could not conceive of Morgoth falling to the Eldar and Edain (in which he was correct). The writers truly did not understand any of these matters.

A common experience among readers of Tolkien’s books is “a hunger to find out more about the historical past” of Middle Earth and the people and places named while reading “The Lord of the Rings”. Tolkien wrote his books/world with such immersion that the reader experiences a “historical believability”. It’s as if the events of elves, dark lords, epic wars, and grand heroes are a part of our modern day history. That feature beckons one to read further and further back in time in Tolkien’s mythos. People that feel that experience are good candidates for reading The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and his other books.

Something from the real second age: The leaves were long, the grass was green, The hemlock-umbels tall and fair, And in the glade a light was seen Of stars in shadow shimmering. Tinúviel was dancing there To music of a pipe unseen, And light of stars was in her hair, And in her raiment glimmering. There Beren came from mountains cold, And lost he wandered under leaves, And where the Elven-river rolled, He walked alone and sorrowing. He peered between the hemlock-leaves And saw in wonder flowers of gold Upon her mantle and her sleeves, And her hair like shadow following. Enchantment healed his weary feet That over hills were doomed to roam; And forth he hastened, strong and fleet, And grasped at moonbeams glistening. Through woven woods in Elvenhome She lightly fled on dancing feet, And left him lonely still to roam In the silent forest listening. He heard there oft the flying sound Of feet as light as linden-leaves, Or music welling underground, In hidden hollows quavering. Now withered lay the hemlock-sheaves, And one by one with sighing sound Whispering fell the beachen leaves In the wintry woodland wavering. He sought her ever, wandering far Where leaves of years were thickly strewn, By light of moon and ray of star In frosty heavens shivering. Her mantle glinted in the moon, As on a hill-top high and far She danced, and at her feet was strewn A mist of silver quivering. When winter passed, she came again, And her song released the sudden spring, Like rising lark, and falling rain, And melting water bubbling. He saw the elven-flowers spring About her feet, and healed again He longed by her to dance and sing Upon the grass untroubling. Again she fled, but swift he came. Tinúviel! Tinúviel! He called her by her elvish name; And there she halted listening. One moment stood she, and a spell His voice laid on her: Beren came, And doom fell on Tinúviel That in his arms lay glistening. As Beren looked into her eyes Within the shadows of her hair, The trembling starlight of the skies He saw there mirrored shimmering. Tinúviel the elven-fair, Immortal maiden elven-wise, About him cast her shadowy hair And arms like silver glimmering. Long was the way that fate them bore, O'er stony mountains cold and grey, Through halls of ireon and darkling door, And woods of nightshade morrowless. The Sundering Seas between them lay, And yet at last they met once more, And long ago they passed away In the forest singing sorrowless.

While the Amazon deal with the Estate was for Lord of the Rings materials as it pertains to the Second Age (and so, for example, includes Elrond's infodump in Fellowship of the Rings), they also can get permission for specific items from Tolkien's other writings. The most obvious example is the map of Númenor, which only appears in 'Unfinished Tales', or the mention of Beleriand, which does not occur in Lord of the Rings (if memory serves). Further, copyright cannot prevent them from being 'informed' by those other materials, for example portraying Galadriel as always wise and opposing Feanor, etc. And of course, the Appendix alone contains critical passages including the one describing how, when Ar-Pharazôn set foot in the Undying Lands, the Valar 'laid down their guardianship and called upon the One' and so the world was changed. (As for Galadriel's place in the Kin-slaying, Tolkien changed his mind about this in the years following LotR's publication, basically making her more heroic over time, and changing her connection with the other Noldorin exiles; see 'Unfinished Tales'). Read the Appendices (A and B, and perhaps F, the very last paragraph of which shows why the surname 'Brandyfoot' is rubbish) which give much of the history. If those bore you-no, you do not have to remember the names of all the kings and queens of Númenor, there will be no quiz-you may not care for the Silmarillion. Christopher Tolkien changed little, except for a very difficult story matter where he had to invent an incident. CJRT (Christopher) then published twelve volumes, 'The History of Middle-earth', a scholarly presentation of Tolkien's manuscripts (i.e., with extensive footnotes and documentation of hand corrections), from the earliest versions of the tales that we know as the Silmarillion ('The Book of Lost Tales', begun around 1917), to writings about Middle-earth that he made only months before his death in 1973, as well as 'Unfinished Tales', a more mass-audience book, with somewhat more completed late writings. Thus, we know exactly what materials CJRT had to work with in compiling the Silmarillion, and what was missing and had to be bridged by new narrative. These are not intended as reading matter the way a novel is, but some of Tolkien's most beautiful writing can be found in those volumes, as well as the false starts and changes in The Lord of the Rings, as the story gradually became clearer to him. Deep geekery, but very rewarding. Aside from 'Aldarion and Erendis', there is really nothing resembling a connected story even in The Silmarillion or Unfinished Tales that could be adapted to a drama; the Second Age is described in a single chapter of about thirty pages in The Silmarillion and is only a bit more than a prose version of the Appendix materials-but still a chronicle, not a story. There is only one well-known quotable line of dialogue, when Sauron persuades Ar-Pharazôn to invade Valinor: "Great kings take what is their right." This, if no other line of dialogue, _must_ be in Rings of Power. So any drama in the Second Age must be an original story, with original characters speaking original dialogue. Such a drama will be, in effect, the equivalent to a historical drama (or 'fan fiction' if you prefer), but instead of being set in Tudor England or the War Between the States, set against the events of the Second Age. This isn't that hard to do. Like a historical drama, some liberties can be taken with the details (e.g., combining important Civil War battles to streamline a story), without doing real violence to the known history. They didn't need anything but 'Lord of the Rings Plus A Few Other Things', the rights they got, to get it right. That is no excuse. They got it wrong anyway. And for very casual viewers who only know Middle-earth from the Jackson films, there is a danger that they will receive Rings of Power as 'head canon' and think that it somehow represents the 'true' back-story to the forging of the Rings (remember those?) and the downfall of Númenor and the first defeat of Sauron. And that is rather sad.

Generally I'm mostly agree with Richard's opinion. Some little corrections. Sindar are not Teleri (or Solosimpi), they are relatives (part of original Teleri tribe), but Sindar did not come to Valinor at all. Also concerning Galadriel, from Silmarillion it is not clear, but in other pieces of Ronald (published by Christiopher) texts she can fight against Noldors on the Teleri side during the first kinslaying. And the "halls of the dead" are the halls of MANDOS (Irmo) not Maed(h)ros (son of Feanor).

As a Tolkien fan and reader since the late 70s, I appreciate the effort you made in presenting this subject. The Silmarillion can be likened to the eleven equivalent to the Bible. It's very formal and reverent, written as a true chronicle of history. In universe, it's said that Bilbo compiled a lot of what we know as the Silmarillion while he lived in Rivendale. He would read the original writings in Elrond's library and talk to elves and record. If you're ready for the next level of Tolkien lore, read the 12 volumes of The History Of Middle Earth.

@@2ToRamble Yes, I've read all 12 volumes. Be forwarned: after the first 2 volumes (Unfinished Tales 1 & 2), the books become a forensic dissection of Tolkien's writing. It's not a history of Middle Earth, but a history of Tolkien's writing of the Middle Earth books. Remember how Christopher Tolkien said in the Preface of the Silmarillion that his dad left fragmentary and alternate stories and it was difficult for him to decide how to glue together a story? Well, Christopher said "screw it" and decided to show all the fragments, dead ends, strange starts etc for all of Tolkien's Middle Earth writings. The contradictory nature of Tolkien's earliest writings can confuse many readers (example: at first, the elves were called gnomes). It shows you the evolution of his creation of Middle Earth in microscopic detail. It's not an easy read since there are so many false starts and alterations to previous stuff. It makes the Silmarillion look like a children's novel. But it's the best look into the mind and process of Tolkien. It's a must read for anyone who really wanted to appreciate the amount of care, time and effort he put into his stories. The meme for Tolkien lore fans is: smirking at people who complain that The Silmarillion is a hard read... as they thumb through the pages of Volume 5: The Lost Road and Other Writings. lol

17:32 Do you think it might be possible that was less of an Easter egg and actually meant to be foreshadowing to a reveal? Like people who watch the movies (the target audience) expect elves to be noble. Sometimes writers hold back and even subvert expectations by telling half a story only to reveal the true reason and method of how the elves came to Middle Earth at a pivotal moment in the story, something Galadrial and the elves all Kno but don't share openly as a shameful part of their history. If the series is over, then there's nothing left to be said, but sometimes you have to be patient before you write something off that might've been intentionally left out.

First two episodes i was optimistic still. But by know i agree it kind of sucks. I like some scenes, but the characters are the main issue, they are mostly very bland.

Do you think that the rings of power should have used the new edit commissioned by the Tolkien Estate “the fall of Numinor”?

@@2ToRamble it’s just frustrating to think, oh we’re going to do a whole 5 series (which was a condition of sale, that they had to fulfil 50 hours of playback) on the second age and not use the book that has all the second age in it. Considering only 1 chapter of the Silmarillion covers the main events of the rings of power it’s not that annoying they didn’t use it, but this book (combining that chapter, the unfinished tails and the history of middle earth) would have been the perfect source material to then write from

@@2ToRamble also just a note, the slaughter of elves on Elves occurred on middle earth during the wars with Morgoth, not before. Which is part of the reason for that whole area of middle earth being sunken as part of the destruction of Beleriand at the end of the first age (defeat of Morgoth). You mixed this and the destruction of Nunemor together which is a separate event in the second age.

My biggest issue with the show is the atmosphere. The second the show starts, it feels nothing like Middle Earth. Compare that to the intro of Fellowship, you hear Galadriel whisper, the music swells, it becomes obvious this is a beautiful world on the verge of crisis. But in this show, it just coasts along and any attempt at atmosphere feels forced.

I (Richard) do agree, the tone and atmosphere are just off with the new show. In the PJ films, the tone was set in the beginning and hooked you till the end.

I appriciate your review on the show however I think you conterdict yourself in a lot of your criticism. You say that you don't care how they get from flag post to flag post as long as they get there. You then complain about it, how the little things that aren't in the show are whats wrong with it. you said there are two way to go about a project like this, either get way in dept or the flag post then you go on to complain how the fall of Númenor but that is a ton of information. The fall of Númenor could have a 8 episode show of itself. The other thing that really stuck out to me is the fact that the change of how Númenor fell is the biggest flaw how else would you be able to sum of the story in a way casual fan understand?
