    @@AceRevero Microsoft can only do so much, and while I will give them props, all they're doing is porting. But given their position and the lack of major architecture shifts (unlike Sony), they are in the best position to do what they are currently doing. Not really sure what's Nintendo's excuse outside of using Disney Vault Tactics. Granted, no separate "company" could ever do what you want through emulation. Too many legal issues. Too many games to consider. At best, a museum.

    Agreed. It’s the scariest for me, each area is frightening and interesting, the ambience and audio are just god-tier, the whole cast is great, and Heather is my favorite lead due to her snarkiness (James is the more complex I will admit). I also feel people downplay the psychological elements compared to 2, there’s a lot of imagery and audio that ties into pregnancy, rape/predators, etc. that I feel people overlook or don’t give credit to.

    Yeah, i think it's crazy how many people act like SH2 is untouchable. Not saying it can't be zomeones personal favorite. But that they always try to undermine SH1 and 3. SH 2 and 3 are equally good IMO. They both have different goals and they both achieve those goals amazingly well.

  • @BareBandSubscription

    @BareBandSubscription

    @@aspaceproductions That’s because SH2 is much more restrained and complex, thematically and emotionally, than SH3. SH2 is more about silent dread, grief, the psychology of it’s characters, and even leaves you with a very conflicted impression of it’s lead character, who was already a spaced out weirdo to begin with. SH3 is much more straightforward with it’s protagonist and narrative, not quite as subtle with it’s themes and motifs, not quite as deep or impactful, and the horror is way more visceral and adrenaline-spiking. I could easily see SH3 being people’s favorite (for years, it actually was the fan favorite before SH2’s big reappraisal), but SH2 is a much more impressive achievement on an artistic level, in my opinion. That’s why it gets all the roses. SH3 is notably a bit more superficial and to-the-point, and it plays it safe, which is exactly what people wanted it to be after SH2.

    I think an important detail about us hitting a slowdown in graphical improvements is that graphics are still improving, but they're in the small details and lighting, which do matter greatly but our brains can fill in missing detail surprisingly well, that's why some people imagine older games as being so much better than they were sometimes. They're filling in the gaps in their mind, some people might forget that all of the 3D gta games had the fused fingers, or that older zelda games didn't have eyeballs just textures slapped on a wooden face. We're getting to the point where differences are so hard to comprehend that they can only really be seen with a side by side comparison.

    A bunch of things in 3 parallel 1, which makes sense given the nature of cycles being a constant theme throughout 3. • @nackskott12

    I always really liked the switch-up from 1, to 2, to 3. SH1 has an extremely iconic dream sequence at the beginning that was so good they remade it shot for shot in the movie. Then in SH2 you expect a similar intro with some scary stuff immediately, but instead you get a long, uncomfortable stroll into town where nothing overtly threatening happens. It just FEELS wrong. Then in SH3 you might be expecting more of SH2, which the game subverts by giving you a cold-open that's intentionally confusing this time around to really fuck with you. Then the game spins you around a few times, smacks you on the ass and says “go do some exploring, dummy.” They realized that if the beginning sequences were too similar it'd create a mental safety-net against the horror. It shouldn't be that big of a deal but it's so difficult to do good horror sequels because of this problem, so I love that SH consistently avoided it in each of the 4 games.

    It's not even the fact that SH3 is an impressive jump in 4 years from SH1's release; it's the fact that SH3 is still a better looking game than the majority of games (even AAA) that comes out today. Fuck, you can compare SH3 to ALL OTHER SH games that came after it and the graphical superiority/competence that SH3 shows off, even with its much more limited polygons, is apparent. By the devs, do you mean Masahiro Ito, since he only designed 5 of the monsters and left the rest up to other staff members so he could focus as the art director and background designer? As that's the only source I've ever heard for that claim. While he had a significant impact on the game, I don't think he gets to be the last word on designs made by other people. That statement most likely means that Ito told other people to make some monsters to fight without giving clear directions. So they made monsters themselves without conveying their intentions to him beyond the physical design getting approval. He doesn't know if they made the monsters without specific meaning, so he defaults to them being made without any, as his intentions were just to make creatures to fight. Other members of Team Silent also didn't know the whole symbolism and inspiration behind Ito's designs for SH2 before compiling it all into the Lost Memories book, so there is precedence for this. Also, I have no idea how you could come up with a monster like the Pendulum without having some symbolic meaning to inspire its creation (mainly the focus on cycles and dualism that is present throughout 3).

    Even in 2 there's Ito basing the weird fleshy straight-jacket monster on someone walking into the office with a hoodie on and their hands in its pockets. And the Numb Bodies in SH3 don't even look phallic, they look more like fleshy xenomorphs with a hole for a face. The fact is, it's just not always that "deep", and Team Silent doesn't really go for low-hanging fruit like that with their symbolism anyway. I think that generally the extent to which SH3 is intended to be an exploration of girls' and women's fears and puberty, sexuality, etc. is very overstated. The game isn't about Heather and womanhood quite in the same way that SH2 is about James, Mary and grief and guilt. There are some elements like that in the game, but I wouldn't say that much of the game is centred around a type of "universal female experience", to the extent that that's even a real thing. Heather also never comes across as particularly troubled or insecure or afraid of men or anything of that sort. It really is mostly just about her trying to save herself and the world from the scary horror cult and it's about as contingent on her being female as any of the other SH games are on their protagonist being male. I think the SH fanbase is just too far up its own arse generally and not half as smart as they think they are, let alone as smart as the devs. The overanalysis of these games by people who are too interested in finding some nonexistent piece of symbolism in some random texture or model or whatever takes away from what the games are really about.

    @@joshuareesor1756 While Ito is the one more open about it, there's been other devs talking about it through the years (and I think even when the strategy guide was made), the Pendulum does in fact have no meaning according to Ito, not because someone else made it, but because they weren't making a psychological horror. The Insane Cancer is another example, as it was the only monster made by the game director and it's just some fat guy. The real star of the game in this regard is Valtiel.

    @@XyerDark Just because 3 doesn't focus on psychological horror like 2 doesn't mean its monsters hold no meaning. The monsters in 1 had meaning without being overly psychological; they were just Alessa's direct fears and interests, like Alessa being scared of dogs, so there are dog monsters, or Alessa being bullied by her school peers, so there are child monsters. 3's meaning is more related to the concepts present throughout (such as the aforementioned themes of cycles and dualism) or the plot details of Alessa's past, the cult and the god's birth. And I'm not saying every monster needs to be built with explicit meaning or purpose to the overall game. 2 had the Creeper enemies that only acted as an homage to 1 and the remaining power of Silent Hill itself, having no relation to James. The sewer monster in 3 seems to just be there as a callback to 1's bloodsucker enemy as a roadblock in the second level that Heather needs to puzzle her way past (though that does tie into the whole "cycle of repetition" the entire game embodies). I just don't think it's a stretch to say the game's themes and the story impacted how the designer's created the monsters, with them reflecting elements of that within their design. Even if they weren't as specific as 1 or 2's, they were made with more thought than just "make a spooky monster to fight."

    The one moment earlier this year I was going to spend $100 on the silent Hill HD collection for my PlayStation 4, I desperately wanted to play because I didn't want Downpour to be the S-H game I played and I blew my only chance. I pre-ordered Elden Ring to play with my elder brother and I hated it because I couldn't play with him do to, he had PS5 and I had a PS4. How're we supposed to know it wouldn't work?

    Komani lost the gold masters, so the games run off older beta code... and then the devs decided to redo a ton of textures(poorly). And then there's the whole thing with them replacing the voice acting.

    > Bad Sound, where certain Sounds are often mixed and moved around badly (such as the sound of enemy walking with metal grate, or the siren horns from SH2's museum staircase being replaced entirely) > Bad Music, where the music is chopped and mixed around where it is often subpar and janky in comparison > Some of the textures are bad; certain textures such as the infamous Teeth are Eyes in SH2 during the Pyramid Head Final Boss scene, where a certain character has a 'void for a mouth' and their teeth replaces an eye... that and other elements, such as overtly 'clean' roads, general texture fuck-ups in the environment... changing the mile numbers of the street signs at the beginning of SH2. This is even more important in SH3, since texturing in SH3 is so... so important, due to its higher emphasis on it, and it fucks up even more so than SH2's ''''''''HD''''''''' Collection. (Don't want to spoil it, but the effects of 'moving blood' on the caged 'bodies' at the start of SH3 in the amusement park become more and more common with its moving textures... and the HD Collection fucks it up in a number of ways as the game continues to use that 'texturing trick') > Voices are overrated; SH2 is generally filled with 'weirdos' (on purpose), but also has generally believable people. Same goes for SH3, more emphasis on normal (protagonist/douglas) than some other characters; the characters that revoiced tried to be "ANIME EMOTION EXAGERATION" where every character emphasizes now too much breathing/sighing/over-emoting gasps in Every. Fucking. Scene... but the characters now sound like Actors acting like Characters, and not like either Weirdos or Normal people. > SH3 has a big fuck-up with the voices in that certain voices are not entirely lost; old voices were not removed in its entirety. Some of the old voices are simply 'lowered' in volume with the new voices overlaying it, or the infamous 'heather death scream', where heather's OG voice is still heard when she gets, say, run over by a roller coaster, and is not voiced by the new actress. > Slowdown and Glitches. Heather has an 'underground' portion that on certain game consoles the player will LAG to SHIT, with the game being almost twice as slow; she is able to jump off edges onto the ground below her that would generally in the OG game be about 'a second', but the HD Collection is more like 3/4 seconds. It also affects her movement. There is other stuff in the town itself where it gets super slowed down. Not to mention there is a portion where the game can just outright crash if they go to certain spots of the game > Fog. The Fog is totally fucked in both games, but not in the same way all the time? SH2's fog is way too far away in the HD collection, to the point where it ruins some environmental assets (such as seeing the ropes abruptly end in the sky at the docks when it was hidden by the fog... or the water, god the fucking water looks like shit due to the lack of Fog). It also affected the Fog in SH3 as well in a number of ways (though I can't remember 'in what ways', but it was pretty bad). > Stupid Bullshit. There are some other elements such as how the game gets more and more fucked the more fucking achievements/trophies you get, to the point where the game is unplayable if you somehow get 100%. The drama surrounding the HD Collection due to Konami and Tomm Hulett (the guy was responsible for most of the modern SH games in some capacity or another), amongst a variety of other bullshit. The HD Collection is Bad. Even with the patches that they threw in, there were a number of patches that often fixed certain bugs/elements 'half-way', and others that broke it in new ways. Some of the HD Collection variants are more fucked up still than others, and some elements such as texturing and such are stilled fucked. Don't Play the HD Collection.

    I haven't paid attention that much to Woolie's adventures in emulation, but none of this clusterfuck would have happened if you had just kept a working PS2 around. In my small-ish city of 100K, there are 2 separate vintage gaming shops, one of which has nearly an entire pallets of old gaming hardware ready to sell, along with shit tons of their respective generation's classic games. Maybe Woolie has some technical reason why just going with the original hardware and game isn't a viable option, IDK.

Thats the advantage of the brick-and-mortar, locally owned vintage game stores, as they have very little relationship with online used games markets. Back when I bought my permanent copy of the greatest hits version of SH2, which was only 5 years ago, I went to my local shop and picked it up for $45.
