Mehmed IV wanted to live up to, and even surpass, the legacy of his forefather Mehmed II, who had secured the Ottomans' inheritance to the Roman Empire through his conquest of Constantinople. So the current Mehmed decided to target Vienna, not knowing its active resistance and elaborate defense buildings designed by Georg Rimpler would prove maddening. So the Ottomans prepared to attack underground, via gunpowder prepared inside mining tunnels.

Personally I both agree and disagree with your assessment of the motivation behind the siege. Yes, everything you said has merit, but mostly for the nobles and royalty, not the commoners. I mean let us be honest the difference in religion in theory would have been a bigger motivation for the commoners.

The best part is that the Winged Hussars didn't even win/decide the battle, the HRE infantry already did that, Mustafa had no chance of holding against even a moderate army of fresh and motivated troops. It was more like "well, we are already here, so TIME TO FLEX" for the Polish king. Btw. that's also why Austrian historians don't make that big deal out of it, but history nerds love it. Did the They Might Be Giants - Istanbul (not Constantinople) song, from the depths of their childhood memories, pop into their head while watching the video... or was it just me?

There is no "I" or "T" in shoes, true enough. But theres plenty in "requisition" "supply trains" "logistical calculations" "war time preparations".

I love the fact that the Ottomans had an official rank of “hardtack” inspectors who had to approve of the bakerys that delivered hardtacks to the Jannisary Corps.

So that's where the Winged Hussars earned their fame to glory... Nice! This series on the Siege of Vienna is just what I needed, not only did I learn about the origin as to why the Winged Hussars earned so much glory, (And their own Sabaton song) but also how this event marked the begining of the road leading to the creation of my second favorite nation in world history, the Austro-Hungarian Empire (Also referred to as the Austrian Empire from its permanent formation in 1804 until 1867)

It's been suggested that this episode of History is what inspired. Tolkien in the Battle of pelinor fields. As this makes Poland equivalent to Rohan, this checks out.
