A bit over 30 years ago, when I was working on US carrier designs in support of NAVSEA, we were carefully watching as the USSR laid down the hull for their first nuclear powered supercarrier design. But it was being built in Ukraine, where much of the Soviet shipbuilding expertise was located. It never got more than about half built before they gave up and started to dismantle it. I have no idea why they gave up, but their history of carrier design and construction is dismal at best. And despite their completion of earlier designs like the Kiev, (there's some irony) they have never really been successful in deploying and operating a carrier air group.

So yeah, i doubt the russian ever will build a super carrier, even if they could afford one.

Aside from upgrading current dockyards to accommodate the building of ship of that size, one of the main issues mentioned in the video on the Kuznetsov is the lack of on shore electrical facility's that can take the pressure off the ships machinery by providing the power needed for basic operations while at dock. Also the Russian government would have to build more, much bigger dry docks for the ship to be repaired in.

If I were Russia... Better to start on this infrastructure and get this experience now. That is the benefit of investing in projects like this. Sure it costs a fortune but it produces jobs and makes you one step closer to actually start becoming the power house. Russia really needs to invest in its self instead of corruption and get rich schemes. Personally I think super carriers are a bad idea. Why put all your eggs in one basket. I think two smaller nuclear carriers would be the better option. Sure you miss out on certain benefits like the square inverse law but that works for 3d space and not carriers where 2d space is what matters the most.

It requires far more than just the infrastructure. I hope they try building it. It will be hugely expensive for them. Then they have a carrier but don't have the surface fleet needed to protect the carrier. Then you need atleast 2 so one can be kept operational while the other is in maintenance and training. Then they are pretty screwed when it comes to ports to base out of. If it was every actually needed, would it survive long enough to be useful.

This is honestly part of the reason for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. One of the terms Russia would have "negotiated" with Ukraine's new regime would have been leasing Odessa's docks to Russia for 99 years. Odessa had the USSR largest drydocks, and Russia really wants them back.

Russia announces new weapons systems all the time. But if you go back and track the number of announcements like this, to the number that actually get developed and deployed in numbers sufficient enough to make a difference on the battlefield, the ratio is quite low

Fun fact, the name 'storm is a contraction of 'shit storm', which is descriptive of the derision any thinking person has of Russia's ability to manufacture anything like a modern warship. I love how the Russians keep doing this stuff in the face of reality, although my amusement is tempered by my concern for their mental well being. I mean seriously.

Not to be that guy but steam powered isn't an insult, superheavy bunker oil burner is. The USS Ohio and Nimitz are both powered by steam turbines just like RMS Mauretania or Titanic's central propeller. The difference being that instead of coal or oil powered boilers making steam it's a reactor. Steam is still fantastic. Generally replaced by turbo electric (gas turbine makes juice, electric motor powers prop. That's how cruise ships do it, or the last of the ocean liner like the SS Normandie.

Yes both of them were incorporated in US ship designs...... Probably the reason they catch fire and sink while docked at the port or develop catastrophic hull cracks every time they enter open seas and the entire class of ships has to be decommissioned only after serving 8 years 😂😂 Or maybe these weapons make the ship soooo expensive, repair/maintenance a constant need and a nightmare , integrated systems faulty and unreliable and the overall design overindulgent serving no purpose that the US Navy has to again ... "Decommission" the produced ships after wasting 100s of billions of dollars in it!!! Yes that is so much less embarrassing!!!

Was that what I was pointing towards?? Kiddo, learn to read properly and understand the topic before getting triggered and arguing with grown ups with random unrelated word vomit. But hey, if you think coping like this and brushing off/justifying extravagant, careless, unnecessary overspending when your banks are collapsing, your industries are hitting a recession along with inflation in economy, nearly the entirety your young adults demographic are living hand to mouth, your country is about to default on its debt , the level of corruption in your country is so shamelessly high that pentagon and defence sector fails 5 audits in a row and cant account for more than 40% of its assets and budget, your lawmakers overvalued the arms aid to Ukraine by 3 billions etc etc etc ...... is what's important here for you and will somehow magically win you this argument, then what can I say.
