Not really, it's nothing to do with how advanced or not Russian tech is, every wall ship is vulnerable to anti ship missiles, that is the whole point. The issue was underestimating the Ukraine's ability to deploy one of these. And this funny how propaganda channels like this constantly parrots how I dated rushes military supposedly is, yet don't say anything when two kinzhal missiles destroy several NATO top generals in Ukraine, Even when they are protected by multiple patriot missile defense systems

If there's one thing i learned from brilliant comedy "The Death of Stalin" which still holds true today: Russian ships don't sink, Russian planes don't crash, Russian Tanks don't break down. Also as other people have said LazerPig's video about the Moskva is a brilliant watch. To paraphrase him; if any western ship was inspected and found in the same condition, the Captain would be court martialled and it never would be sent to war

I had a chance to tour two Soviet warships in the early 1990s when they visited Mayport, Florida. One was the Slava's sister ship, Marshal Ustinov. That was when I started to realize that the big, scary Russian bear was a paper tiger. Except that's an insult to tigers. And paper.

Unfortunately their nukes aren't made of paper ☹️ and we live too close for comfort. There should be more efforts at talks here. This continuing war is just enriching the shareholders of the death merchants like Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing etc. These companies need people to die in war to stay in business. Plus, poking an angry bear isn't a good idea. America wanted this war to boost the war industry. Not defending Russia, but this is just a, geopolitical game that kills innocent women and children and destroys families. There's absolutely nothing to cheer about.

These ships' biggest problem is that even if their equipment worked as claimed they are only capable of tracking a max of 8 threats compared to 32 for a US or UK warship, it means there is no point mounting all those systems because they can't actually be leveraged, in fact the concentrations of ordinance just make them floating bombs. As it turns out they can't even track 2 threats, typical Russian "engineering" right there, all show and no go.

Putin was sanctioned following the attack on Georgia, nothing major. After they got into Syria, the west cheered the involvement.

There's an argument that the only reason the West decided to help Ukraine as much as they have is because Russia's early blunders convinced them Ukraine might actually have a chance. Georgia folded fairly quickly. Syria is a hot mess of conflicting factions; though there was some US involvement there, they infamously pulled-out under Trump's orders only for Russian troops to occupy the bases. There were sanctions placed in response the invading Crimea, but not to a level that concerned Putin. That being said, you are absolutely correct; letting Putin get away with this kind of thing time and time-again has only emboldened him to keep going. Defeating Russia in Ukraine and penalising them adequately is essential to maintaining any semblance of international security and state sovereignty.

The flagship of the Black Sea fleet being sunk by a country without a navy will never stop being funny.

A favorite ship for modelers. The box art consists of a picture of the ocean and nothing else. No ship. Opening the box one finds that the box is empty. A very easy build. No assembly required. The box art can be cut out and displayed on ones' wall in their hobby room.😁😁😁😁

Minor correction about the range of the ships guns and artillery: the 30 mm gatling guns have a maxrang of 5 km, not 24. The dual-barrel AK-130 artillery cannons have a range of 24 km, so that's probably where the misinterpretation was. Great video overall, and I'm glad the Moskva has found a new, more peaceful home at the bottom of the sea.

Moskva was not sunk. It just went on a special submerging operation.

The service document may or may not be authentic. Only Russia can confirm that it is real, and they would never acknowledge the issues raised in the report. Much of the report makes sense given what we know about Russia's lack of maintenance on other vessels as well as the age of the Moskva. One thing that was noted in the report was the fabled defense was not working because the systems were in dire need of maintenance and the radar could not be powered while the vessel was moving. Something that is glossed over is that 2 Neptune missiles should not have been able to sink the Moskva even if the defenses were down. But 2 missiles causing a fire and the Moskva not having adequate fire control systems due to all their issues makes sense.

However, I believe the report because even during the Soviet Union days things like overhauls and engine replacements was the exception, not the rule. General Maintenace was also scarce when it came to trucks and tanks, most were parked in some field and left with no real attempt to keep them serviceable.

To warship sailors a Fire Control System is the system that provides range and bearing to a target and guidance to the gun or missile weapons system for which it is designed. When you talk about damage to the ship resulting in fire, you utilize Fire Fighting or Fire Suppression Systems. These can be everything from fire extinguishers and the ship's firemain piping and firehoses to more sophisticated fire suppression systems like permanently installed CO2 compartment flooding systems for engineering spaces and piping to flood magazines with water. Friends of mine (destroyer sailors) were able to visit the Marshal Ustinov (Slava class) when it visited Norfolk VA in the late 1980s, a couple of them were Damage Controlmen and Hull Technicians (Damage Control experts) and what they told me about what they saw and did NOT see aboard the Ustinov, the lack of basic firefighting and damage control gear shocked me.

Love this episode! As usual, the writing is superb, and Simon's presentation style is without peers! I especially love the closing lines: "A lie told by the Kremlin to justify its colonial empire - an empire the wannabe czar Putin dreams so desperately of rebuilding. We can only hope that in the coming months his dream goes the same way as the Moskva: reduced to nothing more than a pitiful, broken wreck by Ukraine bravely standing up to its old overlord."

It was "ripping out all the copper from five hundred tanks" thievery that did a lot of the russian army in, after the commanders had stolen the pay checks of the people that instead got their payment from pieces of equipment.

The Moskva had a truly Soviet feat of engineering that ensured that they turned off the radar to be able to use satellite communications. The simple solution would have been replacing not only the communication system but also the radar. But they didn't and that meant that the radar system was turned off to communicate with the Russian high command. The ideal moment to hit that is why Russia keeps saying we provided the coordinates and timing.

At the end of every month I see what I have left and donate it directly to the various battalions putting out tenders fro drones, trucks, night vision equipment, etc. I will continue doing so until Russia is kicked out, and I will continue to politically pressure for Ukraine becoming EU and NATO members. Your country is vast, fertile and beautiful and your people are brave, inventive and intelligent. Putin has clearly forgotten how much of the USSRs might actually came from the Ukrainian input. Having you guys "in the club" is going to be mutually beneficial for everyone involved. When this stupid war is over, and the rich oil and gas reserves in the Donbas and Azov sea begin extraction (and that's the real reason for this war, btw) Ukraine will get all the hydrocarbon money Russia used to pocket. The Ukrainian farmers will get new opportunities for making buck on meat production as the west, central and northern EU are used to a meat heavy diet. On the flip side many EU companies will want to set up fabrication in Ukraine as there is already a lot of suitable infrastructure and technical knowhow. I also expect the rebuilding of Ukraine to create a general economic boom, as unemployment will drop and hence wages will go up.

Making the excuse that a fire made the Moskva sink makes it sound even more embarrassing than getting sunk by 2 missiles.

@@recoil53 There's plenty of material inside to feed fire: paper, furniture, equipment... check the USS Bonhomme Richard incident back in 2020, a single person was able to start a four day fire that led to scrapping of the ship. Which was almost four times the size of Moskva. Or Fremantle Highway off the Dutch coast a few days ago. Ships burning are not really something new in naval history. Additionally aluminum. Sometimes used to save weight, it does have tendency to catch fire and melt way faster than other metals. Not everything is steel. Not sure about Slavas though.

The Moskva lost nearly its entire crew judging by the memorials of the families. You don't lose that many men to a slow sinking. That ship went down before the men had enough time to abandon ship. Either it was a catastrophic loss. Or the damage was worse than expected and in the process of trying to save the ship something went wrong, and fast. The second one could happen if fires were raging and ignited the munitions on board. And I honestly think this is the most likely option.

A propperly kept and updated vessel form the 70’s can be a strong fighting ship. Maintenance is the big thing. And as Ive understood, the Moskva had engine troubles, internal communication lines out, radar troubles and more than half the weapons out of action due to hydraulic leaks or motor troubles etc. In other words, the Moskva was not upgraded, it wasnt even maintained in its 70’s state, it was a paper tiger. In the 70’s, when it was properly maintained, it could have been a terrifying warship, but in todays world, Ukraine, a nation without a proper navy managed to easily take it down. NATO has many ships from the 70’s but unlike russia, all the weapons and sensors and Electronics on the NATO ships has been upgraded or replaced. And even the original steel bodies of the ships have been maintained to the biggest standard. While the russians have just been sitting silent and let their ships rust, letting the weapons rust stuck in place and the sensors corrode away.

Funny thing is that this first version of the stamp was released ONE DAY BEFORE the attack on Moskva, making it absolutely prophetic. No wonder stamps from that series are now sold for hundreds of dollars per piece.

Two suggestion that are best done as cold reads. 1. The Kamchatka 2. A video on the many misadventures in the brief but eventful existence of the Russian Second Pacific Squadron before its demise at the Battle of the Tsushima.

Modern ships are compartmentalised, so a breach floods a compartment, rather than the entire ship. A ship not sunk immediately would survive as a floating cripple. Unless it’s in such a poor state of disrepair, bulk head doors won’t close properly. This explains why it took hours to sink.

Keep in mind fires can warp and sometimes melt bulkheads. That can compromise watertight integrity. Fire is enemy number one on all types of vehicles.

I was in the navy in the mid to late 80s and our ship had visited Karachi Pakistan. There was a Russian Slava class vessel in port and a number of Americans went to tour their ship and vis versa. We could not believe what a piece of total crap this ship was. The gun platforms were painted to the deck meaning they have not been operated or checked for operational ability in forever. USN ship's weapon systems are checked twice a day to ensure they are fire capable. The level of dust and dirt built up was incredible. It looked as if they never cleaned their p-ways at all. Our ship had sweepers three times a day 365. Their ship had wood paneling in the p-ways, talk about fire hazards. We did not see any damage control stations or materials at all on board. When one of our group asked about it, the guide said they have a "Ships Closet" Where all the damage control equipment is kept. A ship that big with one "closet" of damage control equipment. Hmmm. It did not inspire a great deal of fear or even respect. The birthing compartments all smelled of diesel fumes and were not well air-conditioned. The food was however very good and made even better with a nice beer to go with. The tour ended at the bar, and this was the best part of the whole ship in my opinion. The Russians had a different view of our vessel. The visitors from the USSR were all officers as they showed incredible incredible interest in damage control equipment, which on an American vessel is copious, obvious, spread out all over the vessel, and everybody on board from the Captin down to the lowliest Boot Camp, is well trained in its use. Our ship's cleanliness evidenced by these men running hands over surfaces and checking for dust and mostly not finding much. They also remarked on how few officers there were on board compared to the Slava. The Russin officers when away with a wholly different view of American Naval power than we did from them. Needless to say, unless the Chinese have a better understanding of what it takes to maintain a Navy I don't see us being kicked out of the #1 spot any time soon.

I mean damage control of the USA is legendary since WW2, I am sure it made a huge difference back then too, saving many many ships.Anyways outside of a few stealthy nuclear subs the rest of the Russian navy always sucked.

This is a wonderfully produced short documentary of the sinking of the flagship of Russia's Black Sea fleet, which is now one of several Naval vessels Ukraine has sunk or damaged, even though they don't have a navy. But Ukraine's resilience and ingenuity in defend their home and lives seems to know no end, as they have inspired many other countries to also fight for their freedoms.

I saw a KZread video that purported to cover a scathing Russian readiness report on the Moskva some months before her loss. One of her engines was essentially condemned. About 1/2 her fire extinguishers were missing. Only 1 of its Gatling turrets was operational. And the air defense radar had to be kept off, as the intercom system wouldn't work if it was on.

Video shows the mighty cruiser-sub Moskva putting up a smoke screen to conceal her conversion to submarine mode to carry out special military operation below the surface of the Black Sea, silent and unseen. The Moskva leads a wolfpack of ship-subs including the Vasiliy Bekh and the Saratov.

that's not Moskva in the thumbnail. it isn't even a Slava class cruiser. That's an Udaloy II class destroyer.

There CIWS system didn't have a 24 km range more like 2 or 3 km. Wiki says 4 km, maybe the 24km was the main gun?

You didn’t mention the Tb2 drone that was supposedly distracted the Moskva and flew around the opposite side ( to 🇺🇦 shoreline ) causing the Moskva to divert it attention and more importantly its 180 degrees forward Radar on the Drone..rather than the two approaching Neptune missiles coming from the rear …giving a much bigger chance of them striking and sinking the Moskva …💙💛💙

Pretty sure it was a verbal typo. 24km is a likely range for the 130mm, while 2.4km sounds *might* be a tad short for the 30mm CIWS. Or not. But 24km 30mm CIWS? *Maybe* as a rail gun. *Unlikely* as a "mortar". But possible as a rail gun mortar. 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪

​@@dinsdalemontypiranha4349funnily enough, America had ITS first formative war (post revolution) at sea, and against the ottomans and their pirate freebooters/privateers. So it actually kind of fits for Americans too.

Interesting note that I feel needs to be shared... Shortly after the sinking, there surfaced a maintenance report of the Moskva from the Russian authorities that some the Reddit r/navy managed to get. A whole lot of problems were plaguing the Moskva leading up to her loss: None of the three-tier missile defense systems onboard Moskva were working properly - none of the short-range sea-to-air launchers; only one of the six anti-missile CIWS guns worked; and while its S-300 SAM batteries had all tubes functional, the radar they used for targeting interfered with the intercom, so most of the time it was left off - not that it was reliable when on anyway. The twin-linked 130mm cannons also didn't work. Most of the watertight doors leaked, only 50 fire extinguishers (out of the legally mandated 500) were onboard, and the safety equipment was all locked up with a key only the admiral had due to constant theft. Several of the engines were over 10,000 hours past replacement wear, and without express permission from the admiral it could only go half speed in emergencies. Many of the controls were nonfunctional, including the indicator lights for failures. The generators were old and worked at random, and the steering gear only allowed for very shallow turns for a vessel of its size... Oh, and the heat and aircon didn't work right! With all this in mind, it somewhat becomes more understandable why she wasn't seen outside the Black Sea since 2016, especially since her refit in that same year had to be cancelled due to lack of funding... And even with all of this, the rating was STILL "Satisfactory!" And there you have it - With the Moskva barely a tired shadow of her once-proud self, her aging and malfunctioning anti-air defenses were easily duped by a drone, and the two anti-ship missiles that followed triggered both a blaze it couldn't put out and leaks that were impossible to stop, all problems the vessel was supposed to be equipped to handle.

I'll be "that guy" to point out that your thumbnail is a Kara-class cruiser, not a Slava-class vessel like the Moskva. Slava class was the follow-on to the Kara class junk. When western veterans were invited to tour ships like the Moskva circa 2000, they were indeed struck by the lack of fire suppression gear on the vessels. The assessment was "Looks mean, can't take a punch."

It was the same back in the '80s. They had on closet with some shitty DC stuff that looked like it had not been touched in years. When I was a blue water man we did DC drills every single day.

Supposedly Bayraktar drones *were* in the area, just at the edge of SAM range from the Moskva. These drones distracted the ship and allowed the missiles to slip in closer before detection. The large radar on the ship could be used for detection OR guidance. The nearby drones had the ships radar in guidance mode hoping for a shot. Thus the missiles appearing in a different direction were able to get in close. At least this was the theory a year ago. Since Simon didn't mention it, has new evidence emerged that it is incorrect?

The maintance report indicates most of the air defence radars were malfunctioning or non-functional. Critical was one which interfered with the coms, so was regularly disabled. It's believed that either the radar operators disregarded the signal or more likely never saw the missiles. In this case, the Russian response claiming an ammunition fire also makes sense, given to the command it would have appeared as if there was simply a sudden explosion.

@@macattackmicmac And when they did work, they had a limited scope of tracking, so 2 missiles at once could have potentially overwhelmed it regardless. Rumour had it Ukraine launched 4 missiles, and 2 were lost due to ground detection and 2 were never seen by the ship at all and never communicated they were incoming.

Pretty self explanatory, but I do find it hilarious that the power that one 'ruled the waves' can't even launch an aircraft carrier without it failing, in peacetime. Then again, my own country lost a 3.3 billion dollar (replacement cost) amphibious ship in port, during peacetime. @@rogerwilco5918
