I'm from Turin! I love my city and its history and I saw the Shroud once when I was little. The chapel in which it's normally conserved is a masterpiece of Piedmontese baroque by architect Guarino Guarini, commissioned by the duke Carlo Emanuele of Savoy in 1611-1667. One thing that makes this very underestimated city of Italy famous is indeed the Shroud.

The thing is fake. It is proven. The dating proved it to be a fake. The weave was not from the first century. Only one team was ever allowed to examine it. There were multiple shrouds claimed to be those from Jesus. One was even claimed to have performed miracles but was later discovered to be Muslim.

The first time I read about this research was in a magazine called unexplained, in the early 80s (I was 13 or 14 years of age) in Belfast, Ireland. The magazine consisted of various stories about ESP, UFOs and the Shroud of Turin. It was around 11pm when I started reading about the Shroud, the house was empty apart from an elderly aunt and myself. The house was part of a terrace block and anyone who would visit , would do this from the front door. A strange thing occurred as I read the story about the shroud, a feeling of euphoric elation came over me, a feeling that I was reading about something that was profoundly sacred. But at the very same moment the outside door handle at the back of the house started to rattle as if someone or something wanted into the house. This movement of the door handle persisted for about a minute, then stopped. When I walked to the door no one was there. Considering no one used that back door particularly if they were visiting and because of the late hour, the event was more than unsettling, it was quite frightening. There seemed like a supernatural element to the whole event, something I can't shake off all these years after.

I am very pleased to have stumbled across this, I followed the work back in the seventies, as a teen in high school, and throughout, and always considered the "evidence" of fake must have been taken from "the repaired section", despite denials throughout the years. I'd studied the pictures in the museum, copies probably, and in magazines, Pop. Mechanics, Science, Discover, and considered it absolute, from my own perspective. It was clear to me, from simply the magazine pictures of the seventies, the vast difference between the original, and the repaired material, it was well dated by history, fire repairs and such, so this is vindicating the Shroud finally, in public, open. I'm a Christian, wasn't at the time, although a believer, just stubborn, and am pleased it's still being fought, it always demonstrates the resistant to the "old truths", which I saw at three, six, in Spain and Italy, a "navy brat", walking through history with elder sister, and Librarian Mom, I'm very pleased to see this brought out like this. Thank you very much. Semper Fidelis, John McClain, GySgt, USMC, ret.

@@therealatheistexperience7654 Logically nothing could have because he was not created. I say this as if it were a proven fact, but it's not, of course, materially provable. It's logically demonstrable, however. There are only two options open to us; either we accept SOME uncreated creator, OR we accept the notion of infinite energy. That is to say, as Aristotle said, all created things must, by definition, have a creator. As you yourself note, this continues ad infinitum. You have parents, have parents, have parents, back through evolution until we have the first life on earth, which was created by free carbon, which was created by atmosphere around the earth, etc, back to the big bang. This is fairly standard secular thought, right? So we can either suppose that the big bang was caused by something that existed in advance of it; or it was there before anything. But if it regresses infinitely, how can it not progress infinitely? And if we accept an infinite big bang, how is that meaningfully different from a creator, from the limited perspective of natural logic? So then we proceed further, and we suppose some other infinite creative force, which in a series of creations, was not itself created. Now I hear many people say that they could imagine a universe which goes on infinitely; the big bang theory fails to support this, given that the universe continues to accelerate outward and shows no signs of potential retraction. But this operates by the same theory as the infinite energy machine, which powers itself indefinitely. Science has derided and will continue to deride such things as a physical impossibility, and I'm inclined to agree with that assessment. But then, whence motive creation in the universe?

Loved this presentation. I'm thankful for this man's work and testimony. Sadly the "Jesus-as-a-brave guy-who-died-for-what-he-belived-in" as the highest praise he can muster is a flat note to any Christian. As C.S. Lewis said about the notion that Christ was a great teacher and that's enough, "It's not an option. He didn't make it available to us. He was either precisely who He said He was or a madman on a par with a man who claims he's a poached egg." At least he admitted he hasn't completely dismissed the idea he might be wrong. A shoe dropped in his deliberations back in the 90s. Let's pray for the other shoe to drop. He's got one foot in the dugout. Would love to have him on the team full time. God bless you, Mr Holdsworth, for your exceptional online presence and Catholic witness.

I saw a documentary on the various speculations how an image like this could have been made/ emerged. One of them said this was made in the moment of the resurrection as an unimaginably strong light emanated from the body itself. I am very much drawn to this idea and the explanations seemed to hold together very neatly. I cannot understand why there is such silence, almost embarrassment, around the Shroud. You lose free will it become demernistic God creating humans for hell. By grace of God alone. It covers no one that way . All churches agree we live in the church age . Pre temple is under mosaic law in this age its a time of sacrifice "works' and "faith" clearly noah had to have faith to then work on a boat.lol. Here in church age it is no calling for such encantations ,works of sacrifice or anything of this ritualistic nature. Remembrance is it. Tribulation is all works. Gonna require work to refuse the mark of the beast. By faith is removing that one foot from this human world corrupted by the sin of man and Satan. Its choosing a pure path to be chosen to go and pave the way along with those few martyrs in waiting. First he takes the dead them living. They will sit on his right shoulder and prepare the way. Then the first seal of Tribulation is broken. . You can make that concoius decision to stay behind and help. By doing so you can have the wealth of this world you like along the way. Enrich yourself in canes world by doing so you enrich the church power and influence. This is your calling not mine .

A little FYI family and friends full of archaeologists who deal with carbon 14 dating: you will have to use other methods because the shroud has been in an intense fire and is made of linen, one of the materials whic "re-sets" its carbon 14 clock back to the beginning in the presence of intense fire conditions. Whether you take a sample from the original cloth or from the 14th century repair patches, they both will show the same date result: the time of the fire. Clay does the same thing, which is how the "re-set" was discovered some years ago in London: a row of medieval foundations was subjected to archaeological survey prior to putting new buildings in site. It was a provable fact that these were medieval buildings, spanning a number of centuries among them. Yet the C14 testing showed them to be exactly the same age and the date given for their creation was WW2. That's because all these buildings were destroyed be Hitler's fire-bombing of parts of London. And the buildings were clay brick. This launched a series of studies to find out what ELSE "re-sets" in fire. Linen is one such material. So all the debate about C14 testing is moot.

Hello, I have followed this good man Barrie, for many years and also the Shroud. This is from Jesus Christ, definately. It proves that something special happened 2000 years ago and should point us to the Bible and to the message of salvation Jesus preached and after that Paul and the other apostles. Forgiveness is preached to those who believe and also a gift of becoming children of God by the new birth, if we repent and turn our lives around to do good and live righteously. The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus was the Jewish Messaih who was rejected by the authorities and was killed and His death God used to save mankind.

What difference does it make what belief system? 'Who do you say that I Am?' It may take a long time, but the Truth will out .. if we dare to let it. And that, my dears, is the stark reality required in the Catholic Faith, whether we/ our pastors currently like it or not ... ;o) St Joseph : Stand by us. Keep the Faith; tell the truth, shame the devil, and let the demons shriek. God bless. ;o) P.S. A very big thank you to Barrie Schwortz for all his sterling effort in getting the 'message' out there. Back in the fall of 2019 I attended an exhibit of the Shroud here in Langley, BC at St Joseph's parish. It was presented by Dr Cheryl White, a board member of STERA and an associate of Mr Schwortz. This event was the first time I had heard in any kind of depth an examination of the evidence revealed by the studies conducted by the team Mr Schwortz was a part of. Previous to that my only knowledge was that commonly perpetuated in the popular culture (medieval forgery, debunked by scientists in the 80s, etc). Dr White was exceptionally impressive in her discourse on the topic, going into great detail about the history of the Shroud as well as the findings from both the initial studies and the later controversies. While I agree wholeheartedly with the statement that "For those with faith no evidence is necessary, and for those without no evidence will suffice", the existence of the Shroud and the passionate dedication of the people who pass on their intimate knowledge of it only deepens and enriches my faith in our Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ.

The documented history is The Shroud itself. The Shroud is it’s best witness. We know where The Shroud has been through the 54+ pollen samples that The Shroud contains. That cloth has traveled a lot during it’s existence, and The Shroud has a story to tell. We know The Shroud was weaved around the southern most point of the Dead Sea. The Shroud moved to the northern most point of the Dead Sea. The Shroud was in Jerusalem, and then Turkey. We know The Shroud was on an island mentioned in The Holy Bible in the care of Paul. The Shroud visited south Eastern Europe before finding it’s way to France where it was in a fire. Some scholars say The Shroud was in to fires. The Shroud found it’s way to Turin, and then was moved to Rome for awhile, and then found it’s way back to Turin. The Holy Shroud has a story that can be supported by written documentation. GOD Bless!

@@timward3142 Major universities teach many things, critical race theory for instance. (as if there was more than one race of human being). Tell me sir, what tree did Adam and Eve eat from? It was the tree of knowledge. The wisdom of men is foolishness to God. Science is theory. A deduction of men. It is not fact nor is it set in stone. It is partial truth or some truth mixed with much assumption. Theory is not fact. An example would be with our current situation. The “science”has changed much hasn’t it? The men of science can’t figure out things happening right now, much less things that happened thousands of years ago. Science tells us that the entire universe expanded from something smaller than a single atom. If that is truly the case, That sounds like creation to me friend. Isaiah “44:24 Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone. KJV Look at the wording. He STRETCHED FORTH the Heavens. Sounds like science agrees with scripture friend. What does science say the first organisms come from? I believe their description is primordial ooze. From earth. From water and soil. What does God say Adam is created from? Genesis “2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”KJV Also, God created the beasts of the earth and the foul of the air before he created man. All of this fits perfectly with science doesn’t it? Man was Gods final creation. The scientific timeline of events fits with this doesn’t it? Man has not been on this earth long. Before you go on saying that God created the heavens and the earth in only six days, realize that you are determining your time by a planet that didn’t exist spinning around a star that didn’t exist. Kind of foolish when you think about it. The Bible tells us that a man’s life is but the blink of an eye to God. If that is so, how long is a day to God? Think about it. You can put your faith in science. I will put my faith in God. God Bless

If we demand certitude in this situation, then in essence, the Shroud becomes and idol. Whereas the image itself, asks us to have faith that he did in fact rise from his death.

While this was an enjoyable and respectful conversation, there is almost zero in here that I can share with skeptical friends, except a man, claiming to be an expert because he was present, expressing his conviction that it is real. But there’s almost not evidence presented for other skeptics to consider. It’s almost as if they assume the viewer is already familiar with all the details. I confess myself very disappointed with the interview, after all. I was hoping for a good-quality interview of Barry giving his entire presentation with clear images of his photographic evidence, since all of Barry’s other presentations that I can find are filmed at churches with poor audio and blown-out video, rendering his photos detail less.

The Gospels also tell us there was a second cloth, folded and separate from the other. Jewish law requires that anything containing the victim’s blood or bodily fluids be buried with the body. Once Jesus was taken down from the cross, his face and head were wrapped in a smaller cloth or napkin, which absorbed the blood and fluids from his nose and mouth. This second cloth, known as the Sudarium, has also survived to the present day and is now kept in the cathedral in Oviedo, Spain, where it has resided since the 7th century. If the sudarium is placed on the facial image of the Shroud of Turin, it is apparent that they depict the image of the same man.

Haven't watched this yet but the botanical analysis of the pollen in it and the face cloth (Sudarium Christi) along with the physicists' attempt to explain the photographic negative image on a non-photosensitive material is remarkably convincing.

It doesn't take faith to see that "a picture is worth a thousand words." (But it takes willful ignorance NOT to see it.) The Shroud is the real deal. So is this: "The Book of God" at A Course in Truth. I'm the prophesied return of Elijah. But you shouldn't believe that, since you don't have good reason to. I'm not sure what I believe about the shroud. The only belief that I have about it if you want to call it a belief is that we really do not have a good explanation for how the image was created. That's sad, for years I have listened to this man talk about the crowd and I am always amazed at how warm and generous and laid-back he is about the whole issue. In the New Testament there is an eye-witness account of what the linens that wrapped Jesus' body looked like. John 20:6-7 tells us what Simon Peter saw when he entered the tomb. It wasn't the Shroud of Turin. John Calvin in his book debunking most Catholic relics (and the lucrative trade in them) Treatise on Relics articulates the issue succinctly. As an object of veneration and adoration , however, the Shroud of Turin is a wonderful relic to millions of believers. But the Catholic Church today makes no claim the impression on the Shroud is that of Jesus. Interesting interview!

The Greek word used in the New Testament to describe the linen clothes left behind after Jesus' resurrection is OTHONE which is translated into English as a sheet or sail. The Shroud is a one piece linen sheet.

What do you think of the research teams emphasis that they analyzed attempts of 'refabrication' that were done by artists and other replicators?

  • @RafaelOtake

    @RafaelOtake

    2 жыл бұрын

@@richpetre2561 There are several aspects to any attempt of recreating the image. 1. The physics and chemistry of the shades of the image. 2. The overall characteristics of the image. Mainly the depth map 3D information. 3. The limitations of the technology of the time. It is pretty obvious that number 3 makes it (almost) impossible to make a forge, even if sometimes ancient technology could be underrated, or the assumption that some lost technology was present at the time. I put a word in parenthesis just to leave a small door open for a tiny possibility yet to be discovered. I have not read all the papers published on the website, but I think I recall some reading I did some decades ago that the image is a darkening on one side of the fibers. It is not a thermal burn, like a fire, and this opened the possibility that it was light (or some electromagnetic wave) burn, fast so it only affected one side of the fiber and do not burn the other side, and intense enough to actually make a mark. If you leave a pile of white paper sheets at the sun, the first layers will darken, actually slow-burning, (not by combustion). I am not a chemist either, so I do not know how the long chains of long carbon molecules on a natural fiber decay into smaller carbon molecules, darker ones. I do not know if this difference of the molecular composition of one side of one fiber vs the other side can be performed. Tests to recreate this on natural fibers using different wavelengths could be interesting, probably with UV light or more energetic wavelengths. Point 2 is a matter for the setup, for the characteristics of the interrelation of the shroud and the image generating body. At first glance could be "easy" to measure distances of a face or a body to a flat surface, for example, making a cast of a body and slicing it. But two more factors make things worst. a. The idea that the shroud by gravity takes a different shape on top of the body than a flat surface. I am totally ignorant if the depth information on the two sides of the shroud is different in this regard, making the backside have a less complex deformation than the upper one. b. If the depth information is radiated or it could be potentially made from parallel rays, let's say vertical ones only. Of course, the complexity of these characteristics is even for computer calculated analysis quite a challenge. ----- I do believe that this image is not man-made, especially for the constraints on point 3. But as the shroud is still a physical object, I think there is a chance to replicate (with some modern technology) a similar image. I am Catholic, so I know that (c) we are not "obligated" to think that the shroud is the real shroud because it makes no difference in our beliefs, but (d) it is a very, very nice gift we were given, it is like a selfie of Jesus; and even if we could someday replicate the image, in both, micro and macro characteristics, it does not remove the value of the original selfie, It only make us appreciate it more.

@@RafaelOtake I like your idea on point 2, that an emission of radiated particles leaving a source in waves, that are shown to be 'moving' as they are transmitted is a rather unique problem to imagine. A molded form, holding a radioactive burst, then 'disappearing' in the 'falling' effect of the cloth itself is not only challenging and currently unable to replicate- It's Wonderful!

I don’t know why anybody still even refers to the radio carbon dating back in the 80s. Raymond Rodgers of Los Alamos, an original member of the STURP team, has already done the research back in 2005 to show why the carbon dating was so off. Rogers had the original retention samples from the 80s carbon dating testing. He clearly showed in published research in 2005 that the samples taken from the shroud all contained a mixed batch of original linen and patched cotton from a much later patching. This was published in the legitimate scientific journal Thermochimica Acta back in 2005. So, of course, if you do dating on a sample that has original material mixed with material from a much later time period; you were going to get results that are somewhere in between the two time periods. Which is what happened in the carbon dating in the 80s. This has been well known since 2005 - so I don’t understand why anyone still refers to the 80s carbon dating process when they refer to the shroud.

What about the "Light " factor. Early photography used that big explosion of light to capture a picture. The amount of energy that must have been present to "raise the dead" renew a body , must have been extremely similar to that of a photo light exposure. I say it's a "photo" made by "light" or energy used to raise the dead, change a mortal body to a heavily body. That's the easiest way I can explain it. Could science prove this???

I read a while back in a scientific journal that there can be a large margin of error in Carbon-14 dating. The way scientist explain; the calculations are done linearly and therefore unable to take into account that the Carbon-14 in the atmosphere is NOT/ was NOT at a "constant level" over the span of thousands of years!
