The Shocking Truth Behind Campervan Bed Crash Tests

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A Crash Tested Bed CAN FAIL a Crash Test - Campervan Safety Warning
Just because a Seat Bed has passed an M1 Crash Test, it doesn't necessarily mean it is safe in your vehicle. There are lots of factors that can affect how it will respond in the event of an incident.
You will hear and see stories of dangerous conversions, incorrectly fitted appliances, not using the correct hardware for installation. You need to make sure what you have is safe, ask the right questions.
A RIB bed or Rock and Roll bed is personal choice, there are lots of options out there for you to choose. Some people will look for a certified bed, but you need to know how its been tested and if its been fitted in accordance with the manufacturers instruction with appropriate hardware that can often be from third party suppliers. Has the hardware been tested for your application?
Some converters cant even install gas hobs following instructions.
The Millbrook testing facility has carried out in vehicle tests of these beds and there have been fails for a variety of reasons and this is from the people who are trying to do the work properly. This highlights even more that those who will just bolt in without proper strengthening beams, steel plates etc are potentially putting occupants at risk. It’s frightening.
Find a reputable converter, installer, campervan manufacturer and have the piece of mind that you know the van is well built and safe.

I bought a VW Transporter T6 Kombi Highline van 140bhp diesel SWB with tailgate.
I have lots more to do though, I have a new electrical system, using Victron components and a Lithium LIFEPO4 battery, so I obviously need to install some power devices. I have a new sound system, with Focal speakers and ibus 2.1 amp, Playstation PS4, which will be removable, TV's on headrests.
Lots for me to look forward too and it would be nice to take you on the journey.
Vanlife for me is just beginning, it's a great adventure and I'm loving it. 😍

Are any camper vans truly 'crash-worthy'? These are complex low volume vehicles and bed testing is only the beginning. These vehicles have cabinets surrounding passengers loaded with items. In the event of a crash, I suspect the cabinet doors will not remain secured and items will turn into flying projectiles. I wish there was greater education to camper van owners about not exceeding payload because an unstable vehicle is more likely to fail/crash under heavy load with passengers and gear. Thanks for the video.

In a previous video I discussed insecure loads etc. Education is indeed required, the manner in which some people pack their vehicles it’s concerning. Many conversions have latching doors which will keep contents contained. The question is what force could they take. It’s the loose items that are a problem and as others have mentioned, those having kitchen knives on a magnet behind the driver is an accident waiting to happen

Some very good points raised here, but surely driver failings must be a bigger factor!!

There are loads of driver failings also and they can be seen on a daily basis. Overloading, dangerous packing, driving using phone, speeding, non load rated wheels and tyres etc etc, however a poorly converted vehicle in the first place could add to the problem. We are never going to remove all risk, but the more risks we are aware of, the more we can rectify 👍🏼

I’ve DIY worked on cars for 30 years, engine swaps, restos etc. Thought about converting a van myself with kits out there, but it isn’t worth the risk. I’ll be looking for a conversion by proper firm, not one man outfits you see selling newly done vans with lots of miles on.
