The Shocking Life of Africa’s Extreme Tribes (Ethiopia)

Turn Down the Crowd w/ Soundcore Space One Noise Cancelling Headphones: soundcore.tech/3035AsFa or on Amazon: soundcore.tech/3035AQ8s
Welcome to the captivating realm of the OMO VALLEY, a destination that is full of culture and stunning landscapes in Southwestern Ethiopia. The prehistoric valley is known to be the birthplace of humanity (literally where the first humans originated from), and today, it remains a place where 8 indigenous communities are thriving.
I came back to the Omo Valley (for the first time in 6 years) and I am telling you the amazing story of these extreme tribes, who have some of the most painful rituals known to man such as lip piercing and bull jumping!
What do you think about the Omo Valley? Would you ever come here?

I'm not sure if anyone reads the comments these days, but if you are reading this, please know that I am very grateful for you! My team and I have been grinding very hard to make these stories come to life (3-4 weeks of editing per video), and we are so happy that you are here to watch them! It's really cool that I am able to travel to faraway places and share their cultures with you on KZread. This Africa series has been a BLAST to make, and the next 4 videos will take you deep inside India to places & cultures that you never knew existed. Please comment here if you read this message - I will be reading them all and responding all day! - Drew Binsky

Humanity is as diverse as it gets when it comes to Cultures & Lifestyles. The World is full of this Diversity, and that's what makes Humanity beautiful. Despite Life being hard, mysterious, and even confusing at times for all of us, we all find a way to get together, work together, support one another, and build a beautiful Economy, Culture, and Lifestyle. This is the beauty of Humanity and the Diversity Worldwide. I can only imagine how many Cultures have been lost and forgotten about to the sands of time.

I understand your concerns about their cultural norms in the 21st century. We have those same concerns here in the "great & mighty USA".🙄 Here, instead of whips, they outlawed that practice after the period of forced & free labor known as "slavery", now the former slave owners have resorted to guns, to shoot & kill at will. The "practices" are still the same: control and/or kill.🙄

As an Ethiopian, this is one of those cultures I don't appreciate. These poor women are being forced to undergo such painful, useless practices in the name of culture. What's more, they're being exploited by everyone for a few cents. Shame on our government for not doing anything.

why are they being forced? they've been doing this for centuries, long before tourists arrived!

@@drewbinsky There have been reports by Ethiopian rights groups and the UN about the cultural pressures put on these girls to undergo such practices (she even tells you in your video - to be suitable for marriage), making them vulnerable to dangerous infections. No wonder there are only 12,000 thousand of them in a country of 120 million. And now that they've realized they can capitalize on their looks, it will be even harder to abandon this harmful practice. To make matters worse, they're increasingly becoming alcoholics. There is a theory that quick tourism money is contributing to that. But this is something i blame on the Ethiopian government and their own local leaders for not providing a better source of income and education as well as banning harmful body mutilations. After all, if we can ban female circumcision, i don't see why we can't ban other equally useless and harmful practices.

@@drewbinskyapparently body scarification was a deterrent against slave raids, as lip plates made a woman unwanted in a slave market.

@@drewbinsky The fact it was done for centuries is exactly why it's forced. They're likely pressured into it and shamed if they don't go through with it. And also shown for it to be the only option they have if they want to be married etc (which marriage seems to be a major part of womens' identities there based on this video, with how many markings women have surrounding it like the neck stuff).
