Painful RITES of PASSAGE with the MURSI TRIBE
The Mursi of Ethiopia are known as one of the most dangerous African Tribes.
Living in the Lower Omo Valley, this area has undergone a lot of pressure over the years.
In this video we cover ourselves in a bit of cow dung and scars. We dive deep into Mursi culture and talk about rites of passage, the ethics of lip plates, arranged marriage, and whether this is the most dangerous tribe in the Africa

@deday89 What do you mean?? Nothing that they are doing is weird at all it’s just their culture.
It’s crazy how much the society we grow up in affects our perception of beauty. For example, I simply cannot fathom how anyone could find those lip plates attractive, but what many fail to realize, the Mursi also couldn’t fathom someone NOT thinking lip plates are attractive. This is such a clear proof of the fact that there is no such thing as objective beauty. Take those lip plates to any other society on earth and they would think that they not only look ugly, but downright disgusting. Yet this small culture has adopted this as a standard of beauty. Very interesting.
@AccidentallyOnPurpose
11 ай бұрын
Yes, I mean, of course we do have some form of individual choice, but what we find attractive is highly influenced by our culture, and those views instilled in us as a child are impossible to break a lot of the time. Like taste for example, how everybody says something is an acquired taste, being taught to eat certain things because of culture makes them taste good, whereas in another culture they taste bad. Our sense of smell is affected too by it. The west is taught that cow's blood is gross and tastes bad, therefore you anticipate it tasting bad, so it does. In other cultures cow's blood is good, therefore it tastes good to them. It's so fascinating.

I'm studying to become an archivist. What you have done here is another form of archive work. It's so important that you did this in a respectful way, when it comes to deeper tribes like this what we have is extremely outdated colonialist writings. You're correcting that. You're showing how it truly is. Thank you
@ikawba00
8 ай бұрын
The outdated colonialists forgot their own origins and chose to bias the books about tribal life. History should always be unbiased, and honest as possible. I'm glad that people these days are becoming more appreciative of the remaining active tribes. We are better than the colonialists ever were.
I couldn't even last 10 minutes how they live. Mad respect this is beyond beautiful. Life would be so simpler but hard yet rewarding all in the same.

Do you think they themselves want to live that way? Guaranteed you bring that one woman on a plane to America and she wouldn't move back to Africa if you paid her to. Nobody wants to live like this, this is just all they know. That they even are starting to own phones and dress in clothing atypical to their culture shows they want different. It's insane how you Westerners are so arrogantly out of touch with humanity. You actually think someone wants to be lion food and living day to day hoping to eat enough. This is crazy.
Honestly there are so many traditions like scarification that aren’t really that harmful and I don’t think they should be abandoned completely in the modern world so many traditions are beautiful and it’s so wonderful to see them at least in some ways recorded and preserved

Even though I have an extremely weak stomach, and wouldn't be able to do this (I already have afew scars from darker parts of my life, and Ill say that hurts alot), but I don't see the harm in this.. there's alot more dangerous shit people can do ( *cough cough* drink and drive *cough cough* ), and they don't do anything about that. Why is scarification and other traditions "worse"?
@EmberFlames_Jag
Жыл бұрын
No one should have scars put on them cause you can't get rid of it. Unless it's consentual I guess. Keep it away from children and don't pressure adults into it. Tattoos can get removed (usually) but scars I don't think can... Although after seeing part of the video I will say it looks better than I thought and it does look cool. I can understand if children get them they likely wouldn't leave the tribe anyway. Just as long as it's not abusive

As a retired professional tattoo artist for 20 years in the United States. I must say I am truly jealous of your experience with traditional scarification. I see them as amazing people, as they also should be able to protect their livelihood just as any other person without being considered to be violent for protecting themselves and their way of life from thieves stealing their cattle. The violence is at the hands of the thieves who steal their cattle. Whereas they have every right to protect their children and the cattle they raise that enables them to raise their children in the amazing culture their ancestors shared with them as they will also share with their children’s children. That is what has been lost in the western world cultural importance is now lesser then having a iPhone or some other latest gadget and that to me is sad. Thank you sir for videoing your adventures and giving your audience the perspective of these customs and historic cultural values that a lot of these tribes are still living today. I rather throw away the cell phone and money and live in a cave which is not far away from my current way of life now living in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado at 9000ft off the grid with the only video or tv I watch being documentaries in likeness of the ones that you are producing and that are of historical truth. Which is why the value of tribes like the ones that you allow others to see are far richer than most people living in the world today as most people know not their history let alone still value it enough to protect that way of life and to me that is far more important than any amount of money one could ever make and pass down as inheritance. The biggest thing is when the world has become once again as it has in its lifespan destroying the technology that those ancestors had but it was the tribes that were able to continue life. Most people do not currently know how to start a fire and it was said a year ago that 70% of society would die off without electricity in the United States and that is extremely said but good thing to have all that money saved. Once a person is able to cut the rope from the machine and then is able to truly live life as we humans were supposed to live it is only then that a true appreciation for life takes place otherwise it is appreciated for the technology and gadgets a person has not the sunshine, sunrise, sunset. Or the rain when their food depends upon it growing from the rain and not from a grocery store.

I do feel scared, and I do feel lost, but ultimately I'm traveling to grow as a person - exactly as you described - for the first time in my life.
Man im not gonna lie that was way past my comfort zone even just watching but I’m amazed how open you are to things keep it up your showing the entire world things they would never get to see or know otherwise

You are such a beautiful being. The way you hold yourself and go about things I’d just graceful and humble. I learned something new from this video, and I’ll treasure that. Thank you ❤
I watch KZread a lot, this is the first time I see your videos in full, it is one of the best channels I have seen so far.
when you asked what makes her most happy in life and she said "we drink blood and eat porage" i seen her eyes get watery and the emotion felt contagious. find gratitude in the now, think ive been ungrateful. thank you for visiting and sharing your experience.

Watching this makes me want to cry. Our perception of outside cultures is kinda disgusting. I really appreciate what I’ve seen here and cannot judge outside people again. The same happened when watching Best Ever Food Review Show and seeing the foods they eat. I love and respect you for all you do.

@@obscurelyvagueIf the people in this region have been drinking it, staying healthy and strong for many generations, don’t you think it is safe? Doesn’t the video’s itself answer that question? If someone from the western world said it isn’t safe, would that change the tribes truth?? They’re life is proof. That’s another point of the video.
I love how he's so brave even when he wants to cry. Such a great man
It's beautiful to see this! A tribe that people say is dangerous which with he just interacts, without fear. But also to see that they allow you to share their culture with you by giving you the scars. This shows that those tribes are not weird, they just have another perception of what beauty is, but that is what makes the world so diverse and beautiful. The earth and the people on it are beautiful ❤
Some of the most extreme and immersive travel vlogs on youtube! Your adventures never disappoint and your videos are marvellous little documentaries that tell their story.
You're so right about travel being a right of passage, I was homeless at 13 so I was raised by alcoholics,junkies,prisoners,bikers on my travels as a kid all of them took me under their wing. Some treated me well some didn't but none forgotten, it's like an actual cartoon but out the other side of that came a man with moral convictions, compassion, ideals. When I tell people my story it sounds like the origins of a supervillain but I disarm people by being nice and chill everybody gets a firm handshake (it's my one prejudice I can't stand limp handshakes they annoy me but thats absolutely from growing up surrounded by psychotic alpha males haha) I can't physically walk anymore due to health so I live vicariously through videos such as this to see the world soothes my gypsy spirit so I thank you.

dude i can relate to you. got kicked out of my house by my mom at 13. sent to a boatding school had been 6 months homeless at 15 while living at the boarding school cuz they didnt had their shit in order. then got to finnaly have contact with my dad again, started living there, got kicked after 6 months because my dad was like "well I've made peace with that you wouldn't be in my life and I'd rather just be with your half sister in the weekends and my girlfriend (who he knows cheats cuz that's how he met her) and then been homeless till 18. so I also have been raised and watched by junkys, criminals,robbers,bikers etc but never once have they forced me into doing something I didn't want to do. even held me back with things I was already starting to do. People at the bottom will try to get each other up and people at the top mostly try to get you down in my eyes

I respect how much respect you show each culture. Understanding that they have opened their home and culture to you.
I loved how the people were asking for his bracelets in the end, he must have really made a cool impact on the tribe. I am sure they wanted a token to remember this experience forever. OR maybe they just thought the bracelets looked really cool haha. Great video!
I love your content so much! It's not the white-washed, judgmental documentaries we see anywhere else. It's beautifully raw, and incredibly moving. You are, for sure, the most inspiring KZreadr. As a young girl, seeing you travel in ''dangerous'' places has made me less afraid to travel and more open minded about other cultures
My overall take from this video is that people EVERYWHERE are generally good (that's not to say there isn't evil everywhere either) and both respect and humility goes a long ways withing each and every culture. I'm not sure if I could drink blood, but I could inherently appreciate they're beauty standards, individual duties/contributions to the tribe, and ways of thinking. I'm from America and it's beautiful to see that family/tribe are universal and something that we all appreciate throughout the globe. That being said, anyone want part of my so called "tribe" because I'm done done with them? lol
I love this tribe after watching 2 minutes of it. It reminds me of a lion pride, the leader is the big male who cares for all the kids and keeps them in line, but in a nice way. He tapped them to let them know to be quiet, like a quiet leader. So amazing. I would love to live there for a week or two, learning their culture and living as they do

do you guys not think that we think so because we have been raised in individualistic societies? for us, the unit of morality is the individual. here, maybe they think in larger terms, maybe the individual doesn't have much of a say in what goes on? isn't this us projecting our own sense of morality onto these people? how is this any different from colonists thinking that cultures where sex was not tied to marriage deserved to be exterminated? I am always questioning my sense of morality and this just completely threw everything out of the window, so I decided to ask you guys aswell.
I love how you immerse yourself in culture. What a wonderful experience. Continue to keep an open mind, enjoy and learn all you can. Life is beautiful when you live, learn and love.

Your storytelling helps to bring out the humanity in so many neglected cultures. You are respectful, nonjudgmental, and open. Since you are exploring the world through this attitude, we feel that same energy reflected back. We're immersed in your close intimate filming style. While other documentaries pretend to be objective and detached, your videos feel so personal. The people in your video may come from far away continents. They may have grown up with different backgrounds and cultural practices, but at the root, we are all so similar. We all want the warmth of acceptance, family, food, shelter, laughter, and intimacy.

@Irving Shekelstein I do not know in which manner she means to but how I interpret it as a foreigner of your people, I think she means neglected in the sense that people truly don't look at the culture for what it is and make generalizations and assumptions based off of stereotypes or non accurate stories that portray your culture. Basically people can be awfully ignorant about other people's cultures if they're not showing it or taught it directly.

The only thing i'm sad for is the language barrier. You can understand so much of a culture if you understand it's language, since it's not only useful to communicate but it also carries the way people think and interact with the world and with each other. No translation will ever be able to convey this.
