The SHOCKING carbon cost of an email | Carbon cost of emails
Ғылым және технология
Spam emails are the worst, wherever they’re from a big faceless corporate business or a forwarded chain from your long-lost uncle who swears the election was stolen.
But emails like this are not only bad for your mental health, but also for mother nature. Fun Fact… and by Fun I mean horrific knowledge that you can’t unknow…
The average email produced 4gs of CO2. It takes 21g of CO2 to boil water for a cup of tea. So every 5 emails you’ve sent burned as much carbon as 1 cup of tea.
Let's DISCUSS!

This is the best for the algorithm... no need to read it (I've been told it's important / helpful)
Simon Caine is an English award-winning comedian, writer, author, podcaster and human based in Edinburgh Scotland. He makes a video a week, released every Sunday.
Over the last decade, he's performed all over the world, from London to NYC to Australia. His most recent show "every room becomes a panic room when you overthink enough" got 5* reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe where he sold out the run.
Previously he opened for Trevor Lock, Ben Miller and Henry Ginsberg as well as gigged on the same bill as people like Terry Alderton, Mark Dolan, Matthew Crosby and Bec Hill.
He's been featured in the Huffington Post “Tweets of the Week” feature several times and had jokes/writing appeared in The Poke and other publications. He hates writing in the third person.

This video really made me think. A few things: 1. I'm a horrible person who never deletes his emails 2. I've been using an RSS reader for like...3 days, and it's life changing. Newsletters could be published on websites and received via RSS. Therefore no email needed. That would be some kind of internet Utopia. 3. Is posting KZread comments bad?

1) you're not horrible. We all do it. 2) nice work! That's a great way round it and mail chimp does publish a feed of past newsletters but most people seem to still want them in their inbox. The monsters. 3) only on other people's videos 🙏
Now tell us the carbon footprint of a traditional letter.

Tim Berners-Lee is not the Internet's daddy. The US Army built the original Internet (known as ARPANET). TBL was responsible for the web only, not the Internet. E-mail is not the web. FTP is not the web. SSH is not the web. VoIP is not the web. Apps are not the web. The Internet is not the web.

Fair point. It was more trying to give context to who wrote the book. But I agree! 😁
Great! More stuff to be worried about!

That's my brand 😎
I heard that every google search uses a lot of electricity too. Something like 5 cents worth if I recall correctly. Anyway, nice video. It's time for me to stop putting off unsubscribing to all advertisers.

The rabbit holes I fell down researching this. Just think of all the KZread videos with 0 views which are stored forever for example 🥴 I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching 🙏

I wonder how much carbon watching this video caused. I’m not really sure how this can all be allocated to emails, we would still have routers and pcs and connected to the internet, my websites will still have the same server (that my emails also run through) using the same amount of power. I’d argue that Google have less data centres for emails then they do for their Analytics or Ads platforms and obviously KZread.

Completely agree. And I could arrogantly say that the co2 generated watching my videos is fine, but I won't 😅 For me it was just super interesting to look at something completely (or seemingly) innocuous and go down that rabbit hole. 😁

@@simoncaine9515 yeah it is all interesting especially how the internet is causing so much co2, maybe that can be another video!

@@rickydawn4431 I've thought about this but it is much harder to track. I am VERY tempted to do a video about big tech basically lying about their carbon neutral pledges. But we'll see 😁
But KZread comments are alright...right?
